Four Coupeville High School students showed off their superior brain power Saturday, taking home first place in Wind Power at a Science Olympiad regional competition in Seattle.

Luke Carlson, Jose Marcos, Connor McCormick and Zane Bundy combined to net the Wolves’ lone title, while CHS also took three second-place finishes and a fourth-place award.

The competition capped a season that started in October and has required the Wolves, many of whom juggle Science Olympiad with sports, drama and regular school work, to put in extensive time and effort.

Coupeville claimed second in Bridge Building, Robot Arm and Wright Stuff, which is an event involving gliders.

It’s named in honor of the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville), who, if you were paying attention in school, kind of kick-started this whole airplane thing.

The teams for those disciplines included Mitchell Carroll, Joseph Wedekind, Loren Nelson and Laurence Boado (Bridge Building), Nick Dion and Carroll (Robot Arm) and Carlson, Julianne Sem and Madison Rixe (W. Stuff)

The Wolves also copped fourth in Air Trajectory, with Teo Keilwitz, Marcos, Jakobi Baumann and McCormick working on that project.

Overall, 19 CHS students competed across 23 events in the all-day contest.

Other Wolf competitors included Dani Johnson, Garrett Compton, Sebastian Davis, Lilan Sekigawa, Mckenzie Meyer and John McClarin.

Abraham Leyva

Abraham Leyva torched the nets for a team-high 14 goals last season, earning First-Team All-League honors.

Win-loss records can be deceptive.

Take a quick gander at last year’s results for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad and things don’t look real great.

In their first year in the 1A Olympic League the Wolves finished 3-11 overall, 2-4 in conference play, nabbing third-place in a four-team league.

But that’s not the whole story.

Look closer and you would have seen Coupeville was laid low by an extraordinary run of injuries, which at times took away nearly half its starters.

And yet the Wolves came within a goal of upending Port Townsend and claiming second in their league.

Now, with a healthy roster (including the return of one of his most dangerous weapons), third-year CHS coach Kyle Nelson is striding into the new season with an air of confidence.

“We have many returning player with varsity experience,” he said. “Most of those returning players are seniors who are coming back quicker and stronger.

“In our first week of practice it is clear that we are starting right from where we ended last year.”

Topping those returning players are three First-Team All-League picks from last year — senior forward/midfielder Abraham Leyva, senior defender Tanner Kircher and sophomore midfielder William Nelson.

That trio is part of a group of 12 returning lettermen, including senior Zane Bundy, who was Coupeville’s second-leading scorer as a sophomore before missing virtually the entire season last year with a leg injury.

With Bundy working the sidelines in a suit instead of running the pitch, he watched as Leyva rattled home a team-high 14 goals (giving him 25 for his stellar two-year CHS career).

The surprise #2 scorer in 2015 was then-junior Sebastian Davis, who roared out of nowhere to notch six goals in his first go-round as a Wolf booter.

He’s also back, giving Coupeville three marksmen.

Four if you count William Nelson, who hit the back of the net three times as a frosh.

Other lettermen back in uniform include seniors Taylor Chiles (F), Garrett Compton (MF), Cody Menges (D), Loren Nelson (M) and Connor McCormick (GK), junior Uriel Liquidano (D/MF) and sophomore Ethan Spark (MF).

Senior Jose Marcos (GK) and junior Zack Nall (F/M) are also expected to claim varsity spots.

While there’s talent and experience, the one area the Wolves are deficient in is numbers. Repeat last year’s wave of injuries and things could get dicey.

“We are lacking depth,” Kyle Nelson said. “We are down new players coming in and overall numbers, so if we have injuries that could potentially cause problems.

“We are already working harder this year to raise fitness levels to try and avoid injuries.”

The biggest obstacle in Coupeville’s way will be league mate Klahowya, which went 17-4-2 overall, 6-0 in league play and finished fourth at the 1A state tourney last year.

While he’s ready to take a swing at the champs, Nelson is also looking square at Port Townsend, which edged the Wolves 4-2 and 3-2 the first time around.

“Last year we had real good games against Port Townsend, just coming up short on both games,” he said. “We are looking forward to turning that around this year.”

However the regular season goes, the Wolf coach wants his team to be peaking at the end.

Having dropped loser-out playoff games to Mount Baker (3-0) and Charles Wright Academy (5-2) in his first two seasons, Nelson wants to see a return to the days, not that long ago, when the Wolf booters made strong second-season runs.

“I fully expect to have some postseason play this year,” he said. “With the way the District 3 tournament is set I believe we will have a good opportunity for some success.”

Number seven is number three.

Zane Bundy became the third Coupeville High School senior to sign to play college ball, joining Makana Stone (Whitman, basketball) and Dalton Martin (track, Everett Community College).

Bundy, who has been a standout soccer player for the Wolves, is actually going to college as a football player, however.

He’s headed to Santa Barbara City College to kick for the Vaqueros.

The school is always on the outlook for “raw talent” and liked what they saw in Bundy and his big leg, said mom Janine.

During his single season of football, Zane led the Wolves in scoring, kicking five field goals and knocking down eight PATs.

Bundy finished his senior season tied for #1 among 1A players for field goals and fourth among Washington state prep kickers in all classifications.

Zane is all geared up and ready to go. I believe it will be a great fit for him,” said CHS football coach Brett Smedley. “Zane showed great ability and a willingness to learn and get better on a daily basis.

“I am very proud of him and look forward to seeing where this move takes him!”

SBCC plays in the American Pacific Division of the Southern California Football Association and has five league rivals — Antelope Valley, L.A. Pierce, L.A. Valley, Hancock and Citrus.

The league has actually been reformatted for 2016.

Playing in an eight-team conference this past season, the Vaqueros went 5-5 overall, 4-3 in league play.

Santa Barbara is coached by Craig Moropoulos, who has been on the job for nine seasons.

Ryan Labrador

Ryan Labrador (left) recorded his first three varsity tackles Friday.

Freshman Chris Battaglia

Freshman Chris Battaglia was second on the team in tackles and first in sacks.

And now the end has come.

Fall sports officially came to an end Friday night, with the Coupeville High School football squad wrapping its season on Vashon Island.

But, before we let go for good, one final look at Wolf football stats, with a couple of new names slipping in just under the deadline.

Jacob Zettle hauled in his first varsity pass, Teo Keilwitz got his first carries at running back and Ryan Labrador collected his first-ever varsity tackles in the finale.

In the end, it turned out to be a very long trip with very little payoff.

At least on the scoreboard.

Bringing their first season under head coach Brett Smedley to an end Friday night, the Coupeville High School football squad ran afoul of Pirates, falling 70-31 in a non-conference game at Vashon Island.

The very-young Wolves, who started freshmen at several key positions including quarterback, finished 1-9, their fewest wins in a season since 2011.

It was the tenth straight non-winning season for Coupeville football.

Other than a 5-5 mark last year in Tony Maggio’s third and final season, the Wolves have posted losing marks every year since 2005, when they went 6-5 under Ron Bagby.

Facing off with Vashon in a crossover game featuring two teams that failed to make the playoffs, Coupeville got stung early and often.

The Wolves trailed 36-0 early in the second quarter before finally breaking through on offense.

Once they did, they scored their most points of the season. Coupeville’s previous high came in their only win, a 28-26 victory at Chimacum Sept. 18.

Junior Jacob Martin bolted in for his second touchdown of the season — his first came on a fumble recovery against South Whidbey in the season opener — then Zane Bundy tacked on the PAT.

Coupeville continued to chip away at the lead, with Lathom Kelley skipping in to the end zone to match Martin with his second score of the year.

The Wolves added a two-point conversion when Bundy pulled off a fake and took the ball in himself.

His PAT and conversion gave the first-year kicker 25 points on the season, as he edged past Wiley Hesselgrave to be the team’s leading scorer at 25-24.

That was well behind last year, when All-State senior running back/defensive back Josh Bayne tallied 25 touchdowns on his way to 152 points by himself.

Coupeville closed its scoring with touchdowns from freshman twins Gabe and Ty Eck.

The Wolves tacked on two-point conversions after both, via seniors Ryan Griggs and CJ Smith.

The game was the final one for a group of seniors led by four-year letter winners Kelley and Hesselgrave.

Also departing are Bundy, Griggs, Smith, Jake Lord, Josh Lord, JR Pendergrass, Mitchell Losey, Jordan Ford and Brenden Gilbert.
