Go to enough Coupeville High School/Middle School/community sports events, and you’re sure to see John Fisken (and his camera) hanging around.

The photo whiz snaps away and sells his work on cascadeathletics.com. And, is nice enough to send a bunch of the pics my way, as we jointly tell the Canadian-owned “local” newspapers where they can shove it.

A percentage of the sales from his photos goes to fund scholarships for local student athletes.

He’s done it for Oak Harbor High School in years past and he’s launching his inaugural award(s) for CHS this spring.

Which is why it’s important to note that the deadline for applications — April 1 — fast approaches.

Wolf seniors can obtain an application from the CHS counseling office. The top five applicants will be interviewed.

Requirements for the scholarships (the pot is pushing $500, and could go higher with spring sports, so there will likely be two awards):

*Must have participated in at least two sports for all four years of high school

*Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

*Must NOT be getting any type of athletic scholarship from any college

*Must submit a 500 word essay, “How Sports Made Me A Better Person”

Jacalyn Hefflefinger owns the goal right now.

Scoring her sixth goal of the season Saturday, to go with an awe-inspiring score from teammate Jenn Spark, Hefflefinger sparked the Whidbey Islanders GU18 select soccer squad to its sixth straight victory.

The 2-0 home triumph over the Issaquah Arsenal lifts the Islanders to 7-2 on the season, and they get right back at it with a home game at Ft. Nugent (2 PM) Sunday.

Saturday, Whidbey dominated Issaquah from the moment the two teams stepped on the field. The Islanders peppered the Arsenal goalie, claiming a 20-3 shot on goal advantage.

With Morgan Zylstra manning the net for Whidbey, that freed goalie Kenzie Perry (“like a pit bull up front”) to play in the open field, and the fleet-footed one helped kick-start the offense.

Perry moved back into goal in the second half to combine with her teammate on the shutout.

The Islanders broke through when Spark took advantage of a free kick earned by Erin Rosenkranz.

Spark blasted a shot from 20 yards out that neatly curved over the Arsenal wall and plopped right into the corner of the net as the Issaquah goalie could only watch the shot in horror.

Pressing hard in stoppage time, Whidbey sprung Hefflefinger for the game-capping goal.

With mighty mite Micky “Two Fists” LeVine pressuring the defense, Tori Wellman pilfered the ball and slapped a picture-perfect crossing pass to Hefflefinger. Two seconds later, the golden-toed shot-maker had scored again and the celebration was on.

With contributions from every one on the roster, Islander coach Sean LeVine picked Paige Waterman and Becca Pabona as his players of the game.

Paige matched their big, fast bruiser stride for stride and showed how strong she can be,” LeVine said. “We know Paigey is a great defender, but she battled their toughest player all game and won and took her out of the game!

Becca played hard from box to box, battling for every 50/50, and really helped to control our possession,” he added. “Great job!”

We’re still two days away from St. Patrick’s Day, but there was green everywhere Saturday in Coupeville.

The Central Whidbey Co-Op Preschool held its third annual Shamrock 5K Walk/Run, and, as usual, an emphasis was put on running in costume and a bit of the puttin’ on the green.

The photos above are just a wee touch of what was to be seen.

Cue the rain. Cue the wind. It’s time for spring sports on Whidbey.

Did you really think the gentle, balmy, blue sky-drenched weather that we’ve seen the last week would last into the start of the actual seasons?

Oh, you sad, sad fool…

Well, weather or not, the 2014 spring sports season — the last one for Coupeville High School in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference — officially kicks off today, when the Wolf boys’ soccer squad hosts a jamboree (2 PM) at Micky Clark Field.

Lake Stevens and South Whidbey are in town, the event officially puts a stamp on Kyle Nelson’s hiring as Wolf coach (replacing the retired legend, Paul Mendes), and it will go on, regardless of weather.

Soccer doesn’t stop for anything short of a hurricane, and then it depends on what category of hurricane we’re talking about.

The lone CHS golfer, two-time state meet qualifier Christine Fields, was actually supposed to kick off the new season Friday, but excess rain caused a scheduled match at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club between South Whidbey, Overlake and the Lone Wolf to be postponed.

Monday, weather permitting, the season will move into being a full-on reality, with baseball traveling to South Whidbey, softball hopping across to Port Townsend and girls’ tennis welcoming Port Townsend to town.

Tuesday, Friday Harbor comes to Coupeville for soccer and tennis, Fields and her Falcon traveling mates go to Bush and softball squares off at home with arch-rival South Whidbey and its new coach.

Get your bets in now. How many games will be postponed and rescheduled due to weather in ’14?

I’m saying 71, and I feel pretty confident in that number.

Shark! Ice shark on the horizon!!

Shark! Ice shark on the horizon!!

Cause I'm stupid.

Cause I’m stupid.

Damn you, Facebook. I wasn’t ready to go back in the water yet.

It hasn’t been a full four months since the last time Penn Cove assaulted my nether regions with ice water up the trunks.

Nov. 22, 2013 — Day 222 — I came out of the water and walked away for the year, having beaten my two previous years, when I totaled 167 and 133 days  in the less-than-balmy waters of the aquatic temptress that sits in front of my house.

And here I am, March 14 (way too early in the year), going back down the Hill O’ Death — which held up remarkably well during the winter, I must say — and plunging back in.

All cause I got called out by my neighbor, one Ms. Emilee Crichton, Coupeville High School cheer captain and all-around pretty awesome person.

The “cold water challenge,” “winter challenge,” whatever you want to call it, is sweeping the nation (or, Coupeville, at least), as everyone nominates other people for the challenge, then run into the waters off of Whidbey and run back out, generally screaming like banshees.

It’s cute, the way people act like they’ve never felt cold water before.

When Ms. Crichton called my name out on camera, there was no avoiding it. Well, there was, but then I would have felt like a wuss.

Only thing is, if I go back in, I go back in. I stay in longer than the average I’m seeing (15 seconds) on the videos being posted and then I go back in for day two, and three, and four and so on.

So, I went back in, and you know what, it wasn’t that cold. Certainly nothing like it was in November.

So, yeah, it ain’t no big thing. Now, I nominate you all to go back in a second time…
