Rival coaches paid attention.

Tamsin Ward and Lillian Ketterling may be fairly young, but the duo earned big respect for their play during Coupeville’s return to action as a fully independent girls’ soccer program.

After a two-year shutdown, the Wolf booters rejoined the Northwest 2B/1B League this fall and now have landed two players on the All-Conference teams.

Ward, a freshman who punched in a team-high 15 goals for CHS, was tabbed as a First-Team selection, while Ketterling, a sophomore sensation who netted six scores, was named to the Second-Team roster.

Mount Vernon Christian senior Callie Russell was the MVP, with Lopez Island pitch guru Galen Westervelt earning Coach of the Year.

Providence Classical Christian brought home the Team Sportsmanship Award.

One conference towers above the rest these days.

Over the past five seasons, the Northwest 2B/1B League has collected 13 of the 20 state tournament trophies handed out to boys’ soccer teams, including four titles.

The premier pitch program in Coupeville’s nine-team league has been Orcas Island, which slipped past Spokane’s Saint George’s School 1-0 Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School to capture said crown.

That gives the Vikings back-to-back state 2B/1B titles, and three in five years, with runner-up finishes in 2023 and 2022.

NWL rival Mount Vernon Christian, which upended Orcas to win the District 1/2 title two weeks ago, lost to Saint George’s Friday in a shootout in the semifinals.

The Hurricanes then rebounded to drill Evergreen Lutheran 4-2 Saturday to bring home a 3rd place trophy.

It’s hard to believe now, but no NWL boys’ soccer teams earned a trophy in 2019.

The pandemic wiped out the 2020 state playoffs, but since then the conference has taken home three, three, two, three, and two trophies in the five years since.

Friday Harbor won the state title in 2022 and the only non-NWL team to triumph since Covid has been Upper Columbia Academy, which blanked Orcas 2-0 in 2023.

The Vikings crushed UCA 5-0 in a loser-out first round state game this season.

Between 2021-2025 the breakdown for state tourney trophies for NWL teams is:

Orcas Island (5)
Providence Classical Christian (3)
Friday Harbor (2)
Mount Vernon Christian (2)
Lopez Island (1)
Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood (0)
Coupeville (0)
Grace Academy (0)
La Conner (0)

Kamden Ratcliff left it all on the floor Thursday. (RayLynn Ratcliff photo)

It was a split decision.

Playing on the road in Everett Thursday, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams nabbed a nailbiter win and a hard-fought loss while squaring off with Northshore Christian Academy.

It was the third straight trip off-Island for the road warriors, who now get to stick to Whidbey the rest of the way.

Coupeville has four of its final five games at home, beginning with a bout with Granite Falls this coming Tuesday, Nov. 25, along with one short trek to Langley to face South Whidbey.

How Thursday played out:

Team #1:

Coupeville came out on fire but hit a bit of an offensive lull in the middle of the game, eventually falling 55-40.

The Wolves put up a spirited battle, however, with Diesel Eck (13), Kamden Ratcliff (12), and River Simpson (9) combining to score 34 of their team’s points.

Ratcliff was an equal opportunity threat, pounding the boards and “handling the ball with grace and composure” as he “made action happen with his drives!”

Gracen Joiner rattled the rim for four points in support, while Trey Stewart and Colton Ashby rounded out the offense by netting a free throw apiece.

Xander Beaman and Darius Stewart also saw floor time for the Wolves.

Team #2:

Balanced scoring was the key, as eight different Wolves made the net bounce during a 38-37 win.

Les Queen paced CMS, scoring in all four quarters as he racked up a game-high 15 points.

Abel O’Neil (7), Braxten Ratcliff (4), Henry Purdue (4), Xander Flowers (2), Hayden Maynes (2), Brady Sherman (2), and Nico Strong (2) also kept the scorebook keeper busy.

Rounding out the roster were Liam Stoner, Mario Martinez, Brayden Grinstead, and Dreyke Mendiola.

Team #3:

Northshore only goes two teams deep, so the Wolves sat this one out.
