Hardball heroes romp to Senior Night win

Precision pitching, precision hitting.

Sparked by a five-inning no-hitter from hurler Scott Hilborn, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad pounded out 15 base knocks Saturday, routing visiting La Conner 14-1.

The Senior Night win, coming on an afternoon when the Wolves honored Hilborn, Jonathan Valenzuela, and foreign exchange student Piotr Bieda, gives CHS 10 wins in its last 11 games.

Now 12-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 14-4 overall, Coupeville sits alone in first place, a half-game up on idle Mount Vernon Christian.

The Hurricanes are 11-1 in NWL play, with two conference tilts left to play, while the Wolves finish the regular season with a road trip Thursday to play Friday Harbor.

Coupeville was supposed to have a home non-league rumble with Sultan Monday, but that game was suddenly canceled by the Turks, who are scrambling to finish their own conference schedule.

The Wolves, playing Saturday under sunny skies and with no prairie wind buffeting them for the first time all season, closed their home campaign in style.

Scott Hilborn retired the first 10 hitters he faced, surrendering only a pair of walks in the late going.

He whiffed 10 Braves, with La Conner eking out its lone run in the fourth inning thanks to a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and an RBI groundout.

Coupeville was ahead 9-0 at the moment the Braves finally got on the scoreboard, having pushed five runners across the plate in the first, three more in the second, and a lone tally in the bottom of the third.

The Wolves responded to La Conner scoring by tacking on five more runs in the fourth, pushing the game into mercy-rule territory.

All nine CHS players to see action in the game scored, with seven of them recording hits.

Freshman Chase Anderson had the hottest bat, peppering La Conner with four hits, while Jack Porter blasted a pair of doubles while racking up a team-high four RBI.

Hit-happy JV rolls to win

Lights on, bats rarin’ to go.

The first time Coupeville and Darrington clashed in a JV baseball game this season, sunset on the prairie forced a tie after six hard-fought innings.

Thursday was different, as the squads took advantage of the Loggers being able to click on field lights, allowing the Wolves time to hammer out a 16-5 win.

The victory lifts the CHS young guns to 1-4-1 on the season, with two games remaining on the schedule.

Coupeville’s JV is slated to play Monday, May 1 at home against non-conference foe Sultan, then travel to Sedro-Woolley the next day for their finale.

Thursday’s rumble under the lights was all Coupeville, all the way, though Darrington did manage to narrowly avoid being ten-runned after five innings, pushing the game to six frames before the Wolves closed things out.

Coupeville jumped on the Loggers for seven runs in the top of the first to set the mood, added a single tally in the second, then pushed three more across in the third to build an 11-2 lead.

The Wolves failed to score only once, in the fourth, tagging Logger hurlers for three more runs in the fifth and a final two in the sixth.

Coupeville’s biggest blow came from Jack Porter, who launched a legit inside-the-park home run which missed hitting the football stands beyond center field by just a few feet.

The Wolves sent three pitchers to the mound, with starter Landon Roberts whiffing six of the 18 hitters he faced.

Jack Porter came on in relief in the fourth, while Peyton Caveness was lights out in the sixth, setting three straight Loggers down on strikes.

“Peyton had a wicked off-speed pitch that froze guys,” CHS coach Jon Roberts said. “Good game under the lights! Cool experience for all.”

They might want to build a storm shelter in Darrington.

Why?

To protect the locals from the kind of missiles being rained down Thursday afternoon.

The red-hot ‘n rollin’ Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad was in town and smashed 19 hits on its way to a 16-6 win before departing town in a blaze of glory.

Twelve different Wolves collected a base knock during the decimation, even with the game mercy-ruled after five innings, as CHS won for the ninth time in its last 10 tilts.

Now 11-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 13-4 overall, Coupeville heads home for Senior Night Saturday, when it hosts La Conner (3-9, 4-11).

First pitch is 1:00 PM.

With three regular season games left, and two of those conference clashes, the Wolves have clinched the #1 seed for the District 1/2 tournament, and are tied with Mount Vernon Christian (11-1, 12-3) atop the NWL.

Facing off with a decent Darrington squad — the Loggers are a solid .500 team — CHS abused its hosts all afternoon.

The Wolves pushed four runs across in the top of the first, added a single tally in the second, then broke the game wide-open by slapping eight runs on the board in the third.

Three more visitors tapped home plate in the top of the fourth, stretching the lead all the way out to 16-1.

While the Loggers chipped away at the lead late, it came only after Coupeville coach Steve Hilborn cleared his bench.

The Wolves used two of their three freshman hurlers, with starter Coop Cooper whiffing six in three innings of work, while Camden Glover followed with two punch-outs across two frames.

Freshman catcher Chase Anderson threw out a pair of would-be base stealers, keeping Darrington honest, while the Wolves strung together hit after hit while at the plate.

Five of the knocks went for extra bases, with senior slugger Scott Hilborn leading the way with two doubles and a bombastic triple.

Young gun Glover and grizzled vet Jonathan Valenzuela each added a two-bagger, with every Wolf starter, and three back-ups, collecting hits.

The bats were barkin’

A hit for you, a hit for you, and what the hey, three hits for you.

With 10 different players picking up at least one base knock Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad rapped out 20 hits en route to cracking host Concrete.

Erupting for 12 runs in one inning alone — with all but one tally coming with two outs — the Wolves decimated the Lions 18-1 in a game mercy-ruled after five frames.

Winners of eight of its last nine games, Coupeville gets to 10-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 12-4 overall.

The victory pulls the Wolves dead-even with Mount Vernon Christian (10-1, 11-3), which was idle Tuesday, for possession of first place in the NWL.

The two teams, who split their two-game season series, each have three league games remaining on their schedules.

Next up for Coupeville is a road trip to Darrington (5-6, 6-6) Thursday and a home clash with La Conner (2-9, 3-11) Saturday on Senior Night.

Tuesday’s romp in Concrete was actually close for two innings, with the Wolves up 3-1 headed to the top of the third.

CHS pushed three runs across in the first, courtesy a two-run double to left from Jonathan Valenzuela and an RBI single off the bat of Cole White.

But the Wolves came up empty in the second frame, with a would-be base thief thrown out at second.

Coupeville returned the favor quickly, with freshman catcher Chase Anderson gunning down a too-slow Lion runner in the bottom of the inning, and then he and his teammates went medieval on their hosts.

A fielder’s choice groundout from White bumped the lead to 4-1, but left Coupeville one out from ending the top of the third a bit prematurely.

Never fear, however.

From that point on, 12 straight Wolf hitters reached base safely, using a mix of seven hits, four Concrete errors, and one hit batsman.

The biggest blows were a two-run triple to right field by Jack Porter and a two-run single by Coop Cooper, with eight different Wolves picking up an RBI in the inning.

Freshman Aiden O’Neill capped the 12-run explosion by flying home to score on a wild pitch, making it 15-1, while the scorekeeper lost feeling in their writing hand.

Coupeville coasted in from there, tacking on a two-run single from Peyton Caveness in the fourth and an RBI single from Johnny Porter in the fifth.

While the Wolves played whack-a-mole with Concrete’s pitching, the CHS hurlers were almost as dominating.

Camden Glover whiffed four in two innings of work, then turned the ball over to Valenzuela, who closed with three no-hit frames while setting five down on strikes.

Wolf coach Steve Hilborn got action for everyone on the bench, with Seth Woollet, Jaje Drake, and foreign exchange student Piotr Bieda picking up at-bats.
