Red Pride had a nice run, but it’s done.

For the moment at least.

Reviving memories of high school glory Saturday, the Coupeville Cows upended Red Pride at the Tom Roehl Roundball Classic, ending that squad’s run of three straight tournament championships.

The Cows were paced by tourney MVP Jason Bagby and included other former Wolf stars in Nathaniel Mouw, Mike Bagby, Jason McFadyen, Jerry Helm, Jason Fisher and Brad Sherman.

The Cows nipped the Central Ballers, who advanced to the title game for a second straight year.

This year’s roster, headed up by CHS hoops coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh, included Nick Streubel, Gavin O’ Keefe, Kramer O’ Keefe, Anthony Bergeron, Mike Lacey, Austin Thomas, Rodrick Rumble, Rashaad Smith and Harvey Ruiz.

The annual tournament, a fundraiser which honors a former longtime Coupeville coach, drew seven teams this year.

“It was a lot of fun. Wish we could do it more often,” Van Velkinburgh said. “Coach Roehl would be proud of his children and the charity/scholarship they have started.”

Along with game play, the event added a three-point shooting contest, which was won by Arik Dahlin.

The all-day event was sponsored by Harada Physical Therapy, Island Periodontics, DCG Engineering, Windermere and Cascade Custom Homes.

The sound you hear echoing across Whidbey Island this morning is the sound of men who have suddenly remembered they aren’t teenagers any more.

Oh, they played like they still were Saturday.

But Sunday morning, some will pay the toll.

For those involved, however, it was worth it, as a roll call from Coupeville High School’s basketball glory days reassembled for a day.

The event was the annual Tom Roehl Roundball Classic, a fundraiser started in honor of the former longtime Wolf coach.

Held every Christmas break, it raises scholarship money for local students, while giving former Wolves (and some hardy outsiders) a chance to reclaim their hardwood success.

We have lift-off...

We have lift-off…

and the rim cries uncle.

Old stars. New stars. A possible NFL star.

They were all in town Saturday and gathered in the Coupeville High School gym for the annual Tom Roehl Roundball Classic.

The fundraiser, named in honor of a former longtime Wolf coach, drew a strong group of players, with almost every big name from the past two decades of CHS hoops showing up.

Among them was former Oak Harbor football sensation Rodrick Rumble, who went on to have a stellar career at Idaho State.

He’s currently pursuing an NFL career and had a tour of duty in the camp of the Indianapolis Colts.

On this day, the lanky six-foot-two receiver demonstrated his hops for all to see.

This rim will remember Rumble.

Madeline Roberts side venture is going pretty well.

The Coupeville High School grad went to Shoreline Community College to play softball as a scholarship player, but took a slight detour while waiting for spring and joined the womens’ basketball team.

That was a bit of a surprise, as Roberts didn’t play hoops in high school after her freshman year.

But she’s holding her own with the Dolphins, one of five players to see action in all seven of her team’s games.

Roberts is averaging 2.6 points per game (on 7-of-30 shooting), with a high of six against Green River and Everett.

Her best rebounding effort came against Everett, when she hauled down four boards, while she made off with a season-high three steals against both Everett and Olympic.

It was Couple Cam weekend.

Roving photographer John Fisken likes to mix it up a bit and grab a few billion other photos between on-the-court action shots.

This time, as he covered a Wolf boys’ basketball game Friday and a girls’ game Saturday, he decided to make folks hug and grin.

We can dig it.
