Concrete cracked, photos snapped

It’s a two-for-one deal.

Both of Coupeville High School’s varsity basketball teams rolled to big wins Tuesday, and wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken was camped out in the gym to capture photographic proof.

The pics above and below are courtesy him, but rest assured, he shot much, much more than these eight glossy images.

Stone a dynamic defensive disruptor

They respect her game.

Coupeville’s Makana Stone was second in coach voting Tuesday, as England’s Women’s National Basketball League handed out Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Sitota Gines Espinosa of Reading, who led the league in steals, copped the award, finishing with 23 points and five first-place votes.

Stone, who suits up for Loughborough University, pulled in two first-place votes and 14 points.

Esther Little of Ipswich — who has signed to play with Gonzaga — Erica Meyer of Team Solent Kestrels, and Stone’s teammate, Robyn Ainge, round out the top five.

WNBL awards, which started Monday by honoring Loughborough and Thames Valley for best streaming of games, continue through Friday.

The next two days feature the Young (U19) Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and British Team of the Year.

Stone comes back into play Friday, when she is nominated for Player of the Year and Team of the Year.

After graduating from Whitman College, the former Wolf went overseas, playing in a league where schools are allowed one American player.

Playing in 17 of Loughborough’s 19 games, Stone finished with 270 points, 231 rebounds, 33 assists, 58 steals, and eight blocked shots.

Fly, Falcons, fly (really, truly)

The Falcons on Coupeville Sports?????

It’s true, we’re crossing Island lines for a day, highlighting South Whidbey High School basketball, thanks to the camera work of ever-wanderin’ photo whiz kid John Fisken.

His pics showcase the Falcons as they face off with Eastside Prep in a Saturday doubleheader.

I can tell you the SWHS girls won 50-16, raising their record to 1-2 on the season, while the S-Dub boys fell 76-53 to go to 0-2.

Want more than that? Convince the local newspapers which cover that region to get on their game.

Or, convince your parents to let you transfer to Coupeville — just imagine how much coverage you’d get then.

Just sayin’.

Till then, in the spirit of an olive branch in the eternal battle of the Whidbey version of the Hatfields and the McCoys, some photo glossiness as the weekend fades.

Shoot the rock, check the standings

“So do we.”

One week in, three to play.

High school hoops are officially underway in the Northwest 2B/1B League, and a couple of things are already clear.

On the girls side, La Conner is, as always, a beast.

The 2B Braves have polished off Concrete 88-10, Friday Harbor 62-15, and Darrington 87-6, while also stepping outside the NWL to beat 1A power King’s 44-39.

There’s also a second beast, with 1B Mount Vernon Christian having beaten Coupeville 54-14, Concrete 75-17, and Orcas Island 62-16.

La Conner and MVC play June 1 and 15, and barring any kind of Covid-related shenanigans, it would appear the Braves and Hurricanes will slug it out for the title.

On the boys side, things are much more topsy-turvy.

Orcas Island sits atop the standings at 3-1, but lost Saturday to Mount Vernon Christian, a team Coupeville already whacked.

For the Wolves, if their buzzer-beater Saturday at Friday Harbor had stayed in the bucket, they’d be 2-1 and in a second-place tie.

It didn’t, so, for the moment, CHS is a game-and-a-half back of the top spot, though things could radically change in week two.

The Wolves, both boys and girls, play three times this coming week, with home games against Concrete Tuesday and La Conner Thursday, followed by a trip Friday to the wilds of Darrington.

That’ll take us to the halfway point of this pandemic-altered 12-game season, and may provide a bit more clarity on which boys team will rise to the top.

Maybe.

Jonathan Valenzuela has torched the nets for the JV boys.

It’s the easy stat, it’s the sexy stat.

Rebounds, steals, the number of times you draw an offensive charge — all important to basketball success.

But putting the ball in the bucket is ultimately what the game revolves around.

Plus, it’s the stat I can track the best as four separate Coupeville High School hoops squads play out their season.
