Whenever Coupeville Middle School faces off with Stevens, the Wolves find themselves in a deep hole from the start.

Their foe is a fairly ginormous institution which feeds 2A Port Angeles High School (which has a student body four times the size of Coupeville High School).

With a much larger base of students to draw from, Stevens has a decided advantage, and it generally shows on the scoreboard.

Thursday was no different, as Coupeville put up a strong fight in its home finale, but dropped both games.

The Wolf 7th graders stayed within single digits for much of the first half, put together a stellar third quarter, but still fell 63-40.

Meanwhile, across the hall, the CMS 8th graders suffered through a cold-shooting first quarter and never recovered, losing 65-33.

The losses drop the Wolves to 5-4 and 2-7 respectively headed into their final game of the season, a rescheduled road contest at Sequim next Thursday.

Coupeville’s 8th graders fell behind 16-2 after the opening eight minutes and spent the rest of the game playing catch-up.

Jake Mitten poured in 14 of his team-high 16 in the middle two quarters, while Sage Downes knocked down eight points.

Daniel Olson (5) and Dakota Eck (4) rounded out the scoring attack, while Ben Smith and Alex Jimenez also saw floor time.

The Wolf 7th graders got on the board first in their game, with Xavier Murdy pounding home a rebound, and they stayed close in the early going.

Murdy, who was relentless on the boards, knocked down seven points in the early going, capping it with a layup off of a crisp pass from Logan Martin, and CMS was within six at the break, 18-12.

Stevens ability to run in five fresh players at a time began to wear on Coupeville after that, though.

A 12-4 run to end the half sent the Wolves into the locker room trailing by 13, and they were never able to fully recover.

The closest Coupeville got after that was 10, after a gorgeous three-ball from the left side off of Cody Roberts fingertips late in the third quarter.

Stevens blunted the charge, however, taking advantage of crisp passes and quick cuts to ring up a series of buckets in the paint.

Two bright spots for CMS came in the late going, as Connor Barton and Aiden Burdge pulled off sweet moves that left Stevens gobsmacked.

Barton shot up the middle, peeled off three defenders and knocked down a bucket while being hammered, then added the ensuing free throw for three the hard way.

Burdge upped the difficulty factor, charging into the fray and banking a ball high off the glass after getting it off barely over his defender’s outstretched arms.

Coupeville got points from seven of the 12 players to see action, with Caleb Meyer (11), Barton (8) and Murdy (8) leading the way.

Roberts (5), Grady Rickner (4), Martin (2) and Burdge (2) also tallied points, while Hawthorne Wolfe, Logan Wertz, Jonathan Carroll, Gabe Shaw and Tony Garcia also hit the floor.

Welcome to blowout city.

Raining down buckets from every direction, and seemingly from every player, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad romped Friday night.

Led by a 19-point, five three-ball performance from freshman Mason Grove, the Wolves jumped out quickly and sailed to a 57-32 win at Mount Vernon Christian.

The non-conference win lifts the CHS young guns to 7-6 on the season.

Coupeville put the game away quickly, storming out to a 20-6 lead after one quarter.

Six Wolves tallied points in the early going, with Grove hitting a pair of treys and a pair of free throws for a quick eight.

After that, Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh was able to roll out everyone who was in uniform, with 15 guys playing and 11 scoring.

Grove knocked down three more long-range shots in the fourth quarter to put a cap on his game-high 19, while his primary backup came from a brand-new Wolf.

Freshman Branden Newhard, making his CHS debut after recently moving to Whidbey, went for nine of his 11 in the second half.

Toss in six from Jered Brown, and the Wolves would have won playing a three-man game.

Coupeville didn’t stop there, however, with Sean Toomey-Stout and Jacobi Pacquette-Pilgrim draining four points apiece.

Aiden Juras (3), Gavin Knoblich (3), Jean Lund-Olsen (2), Nikolai Lyngra (2), Koa Davison (2) and Ulrik Wells (1) rounded out the scorers.

Kyle Rockwell, Ariah Bepler, Elliott Johnson and Tucker Hall also saw floor time.

Joey Lippo (John Fisken photo)

Sometimes, no matter what you do, you can’t catch a break.

It has seemed that way of late for the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad, which got emotionally knifed in the back for a second straight game Friday night.

Down by three with time running out, playing on the road, the Wolves forced non-conference foe Mount Vernon Christian to turn the ball over with 8.8 seconds to play.

CHS set up a play in the timeout, then ran it perfectly, with Joey Lippo hitting Hunter Smith, and Coupeville’s #1 scorer promptly drilling a game-tying three-ball.

Barring a miracle shot at the buzzer, the Wolves were headed to overtime for the second straight game.

Except…

Adding another layer of frustration to a season that has already had more than its fair share, the refs waved off the three, saying Lippo had narrowly stepped out of bounds while making the pass.

One Coupeville foul and two MVC free throws later, the Wolves headed home with a 54-49 loss despite one of their best efforts of the season.

The defeat, which came despite a season-best performance at the line and seven three-balls which the refs did count, drops CHS to 1-12.

Coupeville came out strongly, building a 17-15 lead after one quarter of play.

Lippo, Ethan Spark and Gabe Wynn each knocked down five points in the early going as the Wolves spread out the offensive load.

Wynn and Lippo drilled treys in the second quarter, Hunter Smith hit four free throws (Coupeville was 9-11 at the charity stripe as a team) and CHS went in the locker room up 27-21.

Unfortunately, the offense dried up a bit in the second half, allowing the Hurricanes to grab control of the lead.

But with the Wolves staying efficient from behind the arc, they stayed close up until getting their legs taken out from beneath them by the refs in the frantic finale.

Lippo and Smith each went for 11 to pace Coupeville, while Wynn hit for eight and Spark drained five.

Brian Shank (4), Cameron Toomey-Stout (3), Hunter Downes (2) and Steven Cope (2) rounded out the scoring attack, with Ariah Bepler chipping in on the defensive side of the ball.

And yes, if you’re adding that up, it equals 46 and not 49.

There was a similar issue on the MVC side of the book as once again road bookkeepers fail to match up to the standard set by CHS home numbers cruncher June Mazdra.

Randy King

CMS 7th grade coach Randy King is not putting up with any shenanigans today.

They dropped the hammer.

Scoring in big bunches Thursday, both of the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball squads rolled to blowout wins at Chimacum.

The 8th graders rode a season-high 27 points from gunner Daniel Olson to capture a 71-50 victory, while the 7th graders were brutally efficient on defense en route to a 44-18 romp.

The wins lift the Wolf 7th graders to 5-3 and the 8th graders to 2-6 on the season.

The young guns jumped out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter, then held Chimacum to four or less points in every period after that.

Spreading their offense out between eight players, the 7th graders were led by Hawthorne Wolfe (12 points) and Connor Barton (11), who combined to outscore the Cowboys on their own.

Grady Rickner tossed in six, while Joseph Starr and Xavier Murdy both knocked down four points apiece.

Caleb Meyer (3), Gabe Shaw (2) and Logan Martin (2) rounded out the scoring, while Cody Roberts, Tony Garcia, Logan Wertz and Aiden Burdge also saw floor time for CMS.

When Coupeville’s 8th grade unit took the floor in the nightcap, they matched the 7th grade, grabbing a 13-8 lead after one quarter.

But then they ramped up the offense, big time, raining down 22 in the second and another 23 in the third to put the game on ice.

Olson and Sage Downes took turns raining down pain on the Cowboys, combining for 49 points on the afternoon.

Downes got all 22 of his points in the first three quarters, capped by a 10-point explosion in the third, while Olson scored in every quarter.

After starting with just a quiet bucket in the first, Olson threw down nine in the second, another six in the third, then wrapped things with 10 in the fourth.

Jake Mitten gave the Wolves three players in double digits, banging home 14 in support of his team’s long range gunners, while Ben Smith and Alex Jimenez dropped in four apiece.

With just five of their normal seven players available, the 8th graders called up Roberts, Rickner and Meyer for a quarter apiece to give the starters a brief blow.
