Fall sports are not quite done yet, but basketball is lurking just around the corner.

Roundball action returns Monday, Nov. 16, when Coupeville High School coaches David King, Amy King, Anthony Smith and Dustin Van Velkinburgh welcome players to the first day of practice.

If the current schedules hold, the Wolf boys will kick off the season two weeks later with a road game on Nov. 30, and the first home hoops action will come in the form of a doubleheader against South Whidbey Dec. 2.

Wolf fans are currently scheduled to get five 2-for-1 deals, with home doubleheaders against South Whidbey, Orcas Island, La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian and Chimacum.

As always, high school sports schedules are almost constantly in flux. Especially before we actually get to the season.

To keep up to date, try either:

Matt Shank

Matt Shank, one of our best and brightest. (John Fisken and Shelli Trumbull photos)

He was just a good dude.

A lot of athletes come and go, and a few really stand out.

Matt Shank? He stood tall for all the right reasons.

A strong athlete and a quiet leader, yes, but also, and let us never underestimate the value of this — just a really good guy.

Since Matt and younger siblings Brian and Ashlie followed their parents (Sallie and Dr. Jim Shank, Coupeville’s Superintendent) from Utah, they have been a blessing to our town.

Now, as Matt takes a huge step in his life, having left The Rock today to begin a two-year mission for his church, we just want to wish him the best.

You don’t have to be a member of the LDS faith (I’m not) to respect the commitment he is making.

Be safe, Mr. Shank. Prosper and enjoy your time spreading your faith.

Who knows where you’ll go and what you’ll do after you finish your time on the road. However it plays out, I am sure you have a bright future ahead of you.

But know, there is always a place for you here in the heart of Wolf Nation. Your seat might be empty for a bit, but we’ll keep it warm for you.

You played with passion, with heart, with honor. You carried yourself with class.

Much respect, Matt, from all of us.

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fiskenb photos)

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fisken photos)

Athletic success is pouring Down(es).

Angie Downes has gifted Coupeville schools with three talented sons — Hunter, Sage and the true superstar, Logan — and all three have made big impacts in the last couple of years.

Leading the pack is the oldest brother, the sling-it and wing-it QB (and today’s birthday boy), Hunter Downes.

Already the starting signal caller for the CHS football team before he hit the big 1-6, Hunter is one of those guys who tackles every sport he plays full-tilt, while never losing the grin that shows how much fun he’s having out there.

Relentless on the basketball court, where he beat opponents black and blue while winning the Mr. Hustle award as a freshman, Downes never backed down.

It’s a trait he has carried with him to the football field, where he has shot up the depth chart as he sailed through middle school ball and now on into his second year at CHS.

His day today is busy, I’m sure.

A birthday (the rock outside the school painted in his honor) and another practice as the Wolf gridiron squad prepares for Friday’s home opener, a tilt against Klahowya with huge playoff implications.

So, we won’t take up much more of his time.

But we do want to swing by long enough to say thank you to Hunter, for playing like a bat out of hell, and wish him a great birthday.

Keep kickin’ ass and takin’ names, Mr. Downes.

Uriel Liquidano

Uriel Liquidano, a man for all seasons. (John Fisken and Shelli Trumbull photos)

The town wasn’t the same without him.

A family move took Uriel Liquidano away from Coupeville High School for a bit last year and things almost fell all to pieces.

So, it’s a good thing he came back.

Once Oscar’s lil’ bro was back on the soccer pitch last spring, things went back to normal. To the way they were supposed to be.

Uriel is one of those indispensable guys, the glue that helps hold things together.

Calm and cool, especially under pressure, he excels on every field, whether it be the soccer pitch, the football gridiron or the basketball court.

He’s also at the forefront of school spirit, joining up with classmates Aiden Crimmins, Jonathan Thurston and Jimmy Myers to uphold the fine tradition of dressing up in costumes for volleyball matches.

As Uriel celebrates a birthday today, we just want to send him best wishes and let him know how much we enjoy having him back in these parts.

It wasn’t the same without you, man.

Luke Merriman, doin' work. (John Fisken photos)

Luke Merriman, doin’ work. (John Fisken photos)

Did you hear all the screaming earlier today?

It’s probably because the teen idol of his generation, the mop-topped, shake ‘n bake ‘n break your ankles hoops star, the smoothest criminal in all the land, one Luke Merriman, had a birthday.

Mr. Merriman can dazzle on the basketball court, whipping the ball between his legs, then stepping back and droppin’ treys from somewhere out in the parking lot.

He was born to be a bad, bad man.

Of course, off the court, you will rarely meet a nicer guy.

Through middle school and now high school, Luke has been one of those dudes who glides through life a bit like he’s Matthew McConaughey’s younger brother.

He’s slick, he’s laid back, he can talk all the day long, but, underneath the lady killer moves, there beats the heart of a true gentleman.

Luke is more delicate than you might think (it would be nice if he could stop breaking bones all the time and stay healthy) but he has a heart a lion could only hope to own.

He’s the real deal, on the court and off, and he’ll always be someone who I, and a lot of other people, always root for.

Happy birthday, Luke. May it fly as high as you do.

And yes, I’ve seen that recent photo of you getting dangerously close to dunking, so that’s pretty dang high.
