They make it rain goals!!

They’re scoring at a record-setting pace.

With 39 goals through 10 games, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad is on target to put up its best offensive numbers in at least a decade.

Having peppered goalies for five more scores since last time we discussed the subject, the current Wolves have tied the 2010 team, and are just nine back of the high-powered ’16 squad.

The numbers for the nine CHS seasons the Olympic League web site has recorded:

2010 – 39 goals
2011 – 30
2012 – 27
2013 – 15
2014 – 22
2015 – 37
2016 – 48
2017 – 26
2018 – 39 and counting

Coupeville (3-1 in Olympic League play, 4-4-2 overall) has five conference games left, and then likely heads to the playoffs.

If the Wolves maintain their current scoring pace, they would obliterate the mark set by the ’16 team.

But, of course, you have to play the games first, and the schedule ahead is a bit tricky.

Two of those regular-season matches are against Klahowya, which has surrendered just six goals this season, none against 1A Olympic League foes.

But, one of those tilts comes against Chimacum, a team that has been shredded for 62 goals in six games.

So, it may balance itself out.

The battle rages!!

Let the jockeying begin.

In a week where many teams were beset by the never-ending rain, two of the four Olympic League races we’re tracking had changes at the top of the standings.

In baseball, Chimacum, which has never finished higher than third in the previous three seasons of the conference, jumped past Coupeville and into first-place.

A one-run win put the Cowboys a game up on the Wolves, but there’s still two-thirds of the league season to play — including two more bouts between these very two teams.

Over on the tennis courts, not a single league match had been played prior to this week.

That’s changed, and with back-to-back wins at the tail end of the week, the Coupeville netters staked a solid claim to being a favorite to win a fourth straight crown.

While softball (Coupeville) and boys soccer (Klahowya) didn’t change leaders, none of the races are anywhere close to being decided yet, ensuring several more weeks of excitement.

Maybe.

Softball, thanks to the unique challenges raised by Port Townsend and Chimacum abandoning their programs this season due to a lack of players, could be settled five days from now.

If CHS beats Klahowya Friday at home, the Wolves, with wins in the first two of three games the squads will play, will clinch their first softball title since 2002.

An Eagle upset (Coupeville won 15-1 Mar. 28 and weather has kept KSS sidelined since that day) and the championship would come down to an Apr. 30 meeting in Silverdale.

And, speaking of upsets, the most unexpected score came from the world of baseball, where Port Townsend shocked Klahowya 6-2 Friday.

The win snapped a 48-game losing skid for the RedHawks, who last won Apr. 9, 2015, and sent the Eagles, the defending champs, crashing into the cellar.

My, oh my.

Leyva stalks scoring record!!

Game by game, he’s chipping away at a record.

Coupeville High School sophomore Derek Leyva banged home his 16th goal of the season Tuesday, scoring for the eighth time in 10 games.

His tally wasn’t enough to save the Wolves against a very-good 2A school, as Coupeville fell 6-2 at Port Angeles, but it did get him one score closer to toppling his cousin.

Abraham Leyva, who graduated in 2016, owns the Wolf boys single-season (20) and career (45) scoring records, but Derek is making a bid for history in his first year at the school.

He has five regular season games left, and, most likely, at least one playoff contest, as he makes a run at the single-season scoring mark.

Coupeville, which also got a goal from James Wood Tuesday, his second of his sophomore campaign, is off for six days now.

The Wolves, 4-4-2 overall after the loss to Port Angeles, close the regular season with five straight 1A Olympic League contests.

That final stretch starts next Monday, Apr. 16, when CHS (3-1 in league play) travels to Klahowya (4-0) to face the three-time defending league champs.

After that comes back-to-back games against Port Townsend (1-3), a road clash with Chimacum (0-4), then Senior Night Apr. 30 against Klahowya.

The Olympic League has not posted playoff brackets yet for 1A, but, in previous years, the top three teams made the postseason.

No days off!!

One school brave enough to bust the schedule.

With spring break in full bloom this past week, every 1A Olympic League school not wearing Coupeville uniforms sat idle, in every sport.

The Wolves, though, were busy, getting in non-conference tilts in softball, baseball and soccer across three of the six days.

Things get back to mostly normal as we move into a new week, as all the lazy bones schools rejoin CHS on the field.

As they get back at it, Coupeville is holding on to the lead in varsity wins for both spring and for the 2017-2018 school year.

With victories in all three sports which have played a league game, the Wolves are up 6-4 on Klahowya this spring and 37-32 for the year.

Port Townsend (22) and Chimacum (10) each have a single win this spring.

Battle with honor!!

“You want to take our photo??!?! Well, OK, but only if you insist.”

   “This blanket is NOT helping!!!! I can feel every wind gust cutting right to my very soul, man!!!!!”

   Buffeted by some killer wind, Wolf captain William Nelson ponders the meaning of life, and why he can’t feel his arms or legs…

   “If they’re playing, we’re staying!” The most die-hard of pitch fans have found their perch.

   Derek Leyva, on the rampage and headed for his team-best 15th goal of the season.

Perfect no more.

While the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad couldn’t hang on for the knockout Saturday, the Wolves overcame vicious winds and a stellar defense to put the first ding in Forks’ armor.

Facing a team which had given up just one goal in six previous games, CHS rifled home enough scores to walk away with a hard-earned 3-3 tie on its home pitch.

Since the game was a non-conference affair, the two teams did not go to overtime or a shootout, cause … soccer.

Now 4-3-2 on the season, Coupeville drops Forks to 6-0-1.

The Spartans entered play Saturday having outscored its foes 32-1, but that was likely because they hadn’t met the free-wheeling Leyva boys yet.

The sophomore cousins each notched another goal, with Derek Leyva hitting on his 15th score and Aram Leyva netting his seventh.

While he’s not part of the family, at least by blood, senior captain Ethan Spark can score just like the cousins, and he punched home his second goal in the last three games to round out the scoring.

The Coupeville booters are wading through their toughest stretch of the schedule, and get right back at it Tuesday when they travel to Port Angeles to face a 6-2-1 squad.

JV wins:

With a little help from an outsider, the Wolf young guns erupted for a hail of goals late in the game to secure a 4-1 win.

The game was played 7-on-7 instead of the usual 11-on-11, and Forks loaned out one of their guys to give Coupeville a “full” roster.

That Spartan ended up knocking in a goal for the Wolves, who also got two scores from Chris Cernick and one from Jonathan Partida.

The game was scoreless at the break, then Forks broke the stalemate midway through the second half.

“We kept fighting,” Cernick said, and when the Wolves finally broke through, they liked it so much they didn’t stop, scoring all four of their goals during a furious final 15 minutes.
