Abraham Leyva sacrifices his noggin for the good of the team.

Abraham Leyva, rock star.

First they need to be good. Then they need to be lucky.

Both parts of the equation go right for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad and it will host its opening playoff game.

A 5-0 loss Monday to visiting Klahowya dropped the Wolves to 2-3 in 1A Olympic League play (3-9 overall) and into third-place in the standings.

But, if CHS upends Port Townsend (3-2) on the road Wednesday in the regular season finale, the two schools will finish in a tie for second place and have split the season series.

If that happens, their fate is decided on the flip of a coin.

Win, and they’re the #2 seed and play at home Saturday, May 9 against the #3 team from the Nisqually League.

Lose, and they’re #3 and hit the road that day to visit the other league’s #2 squad.

Either way, the game will be a loser-out affair.

A victory in their playoff opener and the Wolves advance to the double-elimination portion of districts May 12-16, where two of the remaining four teams would qualify for state.

Klahowya (5-0) assured itself of avoiding a loser-out game with the win Monday, clinching the league title.

But, while they lost, the injury-plagued Wolves did play better in the second half against the Eagles, so you take your positives where you can find them.

“We came out flat in the first half and paid for it quickly,” CHS coach Kyle Nelson said. “The boys regrouped in the second half and played a bit better, only conceding the one goal after half time.”

The season is winding down, but the photo opportunities still abound.

Traveling clicker John Fisken wandered through Coupeville Saturday (perhaps drawn by the sunshine) and he and his lens captured the CHS boys’ soccer squad hard at work.

The Wolves lost a hard-fought non-conference game to private school power Charles Wright Academy, but local fans can forget that and focus on the pics.

Yes, we have become Fashion Weekly. Got a problem with that? Zane Bundy, injured but natty Saturday.

The sun was out Saturday, the fashion was poppin’ and, for a half, it looked like a major upset was brewin’.

But, it wasn’t to be, as, eventually, visiting Charles Wright Academy found their legs and roared back to knock off the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad 3-1.

The non-conference loss dropped the Wolves to 3-8.

Coupeville, 2-2 in Olympic League play, closes the regular season with conference games at home against Klahowya Monday and on the road at Port Townsend Wednesday.

The Wolves have already clinched a playoff berth, but are still fighting with Port Townsend for the league’s #2 seed.

The top two Olympic League teams host their playoff openers, while the #3 seed hits the road.

Coupeville came out on fire Saturday.

Even missing a number of key players — injuries have been a constant, nagging issue for the Wolves — CHS took the early lead.

Abraham Leyva banged home his 13th goal of the season, off of an assist by Uriel Liquidano, to stake Coupeville to a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Tired legs, though, eventually caught up with the Wolves.

“With so many guys out and not as many subs the guys got a little tired the second half,” said Wolf coach Kyle Nelson.

Three days, three birthdays, triple the birthday cake (I assume).

Wolf Nation is on constant cake alert for a couple of days, as two Wolf athletes and a soccer mom who is one of the school’s most vocal supporters, all hit milestones.

Saturday, it’s CHS sophomore Ethan Marx, who has played tennis and baseball and is following in the successful footsteps of big sis Haley.

He’s already making his own name, however, nabbing Most Improved when the Wolf netters handed out awards in the fall.

Roll into Sunday and Dawn Brock, the ultimate soccer homer (and I mean that in a good way), celebrates.

She’s given Coupeville two strong soccer players, Nathan and Tanner Kircher, but it’s her vocal stylings that truly set her apart.

Loud ‘n proud, and fiercely devoted to her all of her soccer guys (whether they be blood relatives or not), she can scare a ref and spur on her team at the same time, without missing a beat.

If other CHS athletic teams were smart, they’d rent her services for their games.

Cause no one (and I mean NO ONE) out cheers Ms. Brock.

With Monday, school will be back in session and our birthday trifecta will come to a close with the coronation of irrepressible cheer sensation Maddy Neitzel.

The Wolf junior jumped into cheer this year feet first and made a huge splash.

She might not be the biggest, but she cheers from her heart, and that part of her is epic-sized.

Whether flying through the air or working the sidelines, Maddy is a burst of sunshine on even the drizzliest, foggiest Friday night and the Wolves are lucky to have her.

Even when she wasn’t cheering in uniform, she always showed up for basketball games with Jazmine Franklin, there to support their friends like Wiley Hesselgrave and Ryan Griggs as they played.

Neitzel, Brock and Marx are involved in different sports, but all three are united by their love for what they do.

They represent Coupeville well, and I hope their birthdays are as great as they are.

Game over, man, game over.

Coupeville High School junior Zane Bundy may be out for the rest of the soccer season after an injury caused by a goalie who took a dive in front of him, but he’s still winning every day.

Following in the well-clad footsteps of Wolf boys’ soccer guru Kyle Nelson, the best-dressed coach at the school, Bundy is not content to merely wear shorts and a t-shirt on the sideline.

No, the fashion-forward one chooses to rock a charcoal suit and bow tie combo that makes international soccer/fashion legend David Beckham look like he shops at Wal-Mart.

Well played, Mr. Bundy. Well played.
