The Wolf cheer squad, which included Robin Cedillo

Cheer drew in 51 girls over two seasons, including Robin Cedillo, who would also go on to play softball for the Wolves.

Soccer was the most popular sport at Coupeville High School during the 2013-2014 school year.

At least in terms of how many students played the sport, and, if we don’t consider cheer a sport — which school officials don’t.

If cheer was given a little more respect, the 51 girls who participated over the course of the fall and winter seasons would top the list.

But, since cheer is considered an activity, soccer, with 50 players (30 boys, 20 girls), rules the roost.

The numbers for the eight sports CHS offers:

Soccer (50) — 30 boys, 20 girls
Tennis (45) — 29 boys, 16 girls
Basketball (44) — 21 boys, 23 girls
Track (40) — 22 boys, 18 girls
Football (39)
Volleyball (21)
Baseball (19)
Softball (13)

Coupeville also had one golfer, junior Christine Fields, who finished 5th at the 1A state tourney. CHS doesn’t offer golf, but Fields trains and travels with South Whidbey while competing as a Wolf.

At the middle school level, Coupeville offers four sports, with hoops drawing the most participants.

CMS sports numbers:

Basketball (45) — 23 boys, 22 girls
Track (42) — 24 boys, 18 girls
Volleyball (33)
Football (15) — 14 boys, 1 girl

Among non-sports activities, drama was one of the biggest draws.

CHS:

Cheer (51)
National Honor Society (43) — 18 boys, 25 girls
Drama (38) — 10 boys, 28 girls
Science Olympiad (14) — 11 boys, 3 girls
ASB Executive Board (8) — 3 boys, 5 girls
History Day (4) — 3 boys, 1 girl
Jazz Band (3) — 3 boys

CMS:

Drama (65) — 18 boys, 47 girls
Natural Helpers (33) — 13 boys, 20 girls
History Day (6) — 2 boys, 4 girls
Jazz Band (5) — 4 boys, 1 girl

Everyone scored. Almost.

Passing the ball with conviction, the Coupeville Elementary School students who patrol the soccer pitch for the Central Whidbey soccer squad sponsored by Ciao found the net with stunning regularity this season.

17 of 19 players scored at least one goal as the U12 team went 13-5. The only two not to hammer home a goal were slowed by injury.

Wrapping their season with conviction, the booters whipped the Oak Harbor Crushers 8-1 and 8-0 Saturday to wrap their season. Four Ciao players scored for the first time in the wins.

Leading into the final weekend, part of the squad took on, and soundly defeated, its fifth grade teachers from CES 5-1 in a “friendly” earlier in the week.

The impressive roster:

4th grade:

Miles Davidson

5th grade:

Owen Barenburg
Sage Downes
Dakota Eck
Alex Jimenez
Eli Kastner
Matthew Kelley
Michael Laska
Jake Mitten
Isaac Shelly
Samuel Wynn

6th grade:

Two sophomores led the team in scoring, but it was a plucky senior who was at the center of things.

Sean Donley was the heart and grit of the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, and he capped his final season as a Wolf by being honored as the Player of the Year at a team banquet Wednesday.

Donley also was named a Second-Team All-Conference midfielder by Cascade Conference coaches, an honor he shared with senior defender Brett Arnold and sophomore scoring sensation Abraham Leyva.

Leyva, who rained down a team-high 11 goals in his first season with CHS, was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. Arnold won Most Inspirational and junior Aaron Wright took home Most Improved.

JV awards went to Ryan Freeman (Player of the Year), Josh Datin (Most Inspirational) and Jeremiah Pace (Most Improved).

Zane Bundy, the matinee idol of CHS soccer.

Zane Bundy, the matinee idol of CHS soccer.

Zane Bundy is the real deal.

He had a huge breakout season this year on the soccer pitch for Coupeville High School, popping goals (he was the second-leading scorer) and assisting on a ton more.

After seeing limited time as a freshman, he was electric as a sophomore, teaming with fellow tenth grader Abraham Leyva to herald the arrival of something CHS rarely had a season ago — offense.

Bundy lit up the net, helped carry Coupeville to a stunning win over South Whidbey and always looked good doing it, rockin’ the best kicks on the team.

It’s still kind of weird for me to see him stepping front and center as a star athlete, because my earliest memories of Zane, who celebrates his 16th birthday today, are of a little kid zooming around Videoville and David’s DVD Den, during my years behind the counter.

Now, he’s a stylishly-dressed two-sport athlete (tennis and soccer) and Homecoming royalty who boasts dance moves that rival the best of Jagger and Swayze.

Through it all, he has remained the same good-natured, super-friendly little dude (well, maybe not little, as he’s actually fairly tall now) he always was.

And you know what? Coupeville is lucky to have him, both as an athlete and as a first-class person.

Happy birthday, Mr. Bundy. The best is yet to come.

Let's get it on!

Let’s get it on!

Soccer balls were flying all over the playing fields at Fort Nugent this weekend.

The annual Rock On 3v3 tourney attracted 60 teams and 320 participants, who all competed in a fast-paced game on a small field with no goalies and limited players.

The Coupeville-based squad of Kicks With Dre, headlined by current and former Wolf stars (Zane Bundy, Grayson Knott, Andre Stone, Evan Amulexen-Coleman and Travis Curtin), ran away with the adult division.

Their opponent in the final was almost a veteran squad comprised of local coaches and dads, the OGFC.

That squad (Sean LeVine, Mark Bundy, Kyle Nelson, Ben Leyva and Robert Wood) went unbeaten at 1-0-2, but came up just short of a win in its final match to get to the championship.

Multiple teams boasted talent from the the Whidbey Islanders GU18 select soccer squad, as well.
