CMS harriers chase trail glory

The fish are back, apparently, and so are the harriers.

The Coupeville Middle School cross country team sent 27 runners to the line Friday in Sultan at the uniquely named Return of the Salmon Invitational.

The six-team event, which went down at Osprey Park, featured a 3,000-meter course.

Two Wolf girls and four boys cracked the top 10, with 7th grader Henry Purdue leading the way with a third-place finish.

Overall, the Wolf boys claimed the team title, while their female counterparts finished second.

“Amazing meet today!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman. “This is such a determined group, and they were so excited!

“They were cheering for each other, giving advice to each other and helping out others,” she added. “Nothing better than that!

“A beautiful day and amazing running!”

Sultan gave out special prizes, with top 10 finishers earning a commemorative t-shirt, and finishers in slots 11-20 being awarded a fish necklace.

Coupeville gets back at it next week, but a lot closer to home, when it hosts a meet Thursday, Oct. 3 at Fort Casey State Park.

Rainy day run for Wolf harriers

The rain fell on the plain, but mainly, it fell on their heads.

Returning to Orcas Island Wednesday, the Coupeville High School cross country team endured a damp day while taking part in a four-school race.

The Wolves lined up with Friday Harbor, Mount Vernon Christian, and their hosts for an event which featured one race — boys and girls combined, taking off from the same start line.

The 5,000-meter course offered a variety of experiences, said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“A true cross country course,” she said. “So much diverse terrain, literally across railroad tracks.

“It rained right up until race time, then started raining again as the race started, but they were happy to be back on Orcas, as it was cancelled last year.”

It’s a two-fer week for the Wolf runners, who hit the road again this Saturday, travelling to Seattle, where they will compete in the King’s Roller Coaster Run.

First run, big results

Meet #1 is in the books.

The Coupeville Middle School cross country squad kicked off a new season in style Saturday with an appearance at the 45th annual Carl Westling Invitational in Langley.

The young Wolves put four runners on the awards podium, earned second-place in the team standings for both girls and boys, and wowed their coach.

“They did amazing today!” said Amber Wyman. “I am so impressed and proud of their work and dedication.

“They have had four full weeks of training before our first race, and it shows with so many amazing PR’s!”

Nearly half of Coupeville’s runners this season are 6th graders, with the group showing continued improvement every run.

“Plan on more PRs as the season progresses,” Wyman said. “This is a determined crew, and they have goals to achieve!”

CMS gets right back at it next week with a trip to Sultan Friday, Sept. 27 for the Return of the Salmon Invitational.

Short trip, fast times

The weather was nice, and the times even nicer.

Competing at the 45th annual Carl Westling Invitational in Langley Saturday, the Coupeville High School cross country squad showed up and showed out.

“It was a good day!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

The Wolves sent 22 runners to the line, spread out across multiple 5,000-meter races, with seven of those who ran in the event last year setting a PR this time around.

Bitting was impressed with her entire roster, repping one of the smallest of the 31 schools in attendance, while offering a little extra praise to some of the harriers.

“Mikayla (Wagner), Devon (Wyman), Isaiah (Allen), and Beckett (Green), just a few of our freshmen runners, ran very impressive races,” she said.

“I am looking forward to see what they do over the season.

“Aleera (Kent), Kayla (Crane), and Ethan (Walling), all new to cross country, are also runners to keep your eyes on. It was a good day for Cow Town!!!”

Coming off the trip down island, Coupeville hits the road twice next week.

First up is a jaunt to Orcas Island for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet Wednesday, then an appearance Saturday in Seattle at a meet hosted by King’s.
