CHS Homecoming game set for Oct. 2

Hopefully.

The Coupeville High School football schedule is still a work in progress, as the Wolves are searching for a week #4 opponent after their planned foe, Life Christian, lost their coach, followed by an exodus of players.

But Homecoming has been etched in stone by CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith, and it’s set for Friday, Oct. 2.

Bennett Richter’s gridiron giants host Friday Harbor that night, in the first of two clashes between the Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, guaranteeing a hyped-up atmosphere.

As we sit here on June 16, here’s where the rest of the schedule is at the moment:

Fri-Sept. 4 — Klahowya (7:00)

Fri-Sept. 11 — @ Raymond/South Bend (6:00)

Sat-Sept. 19 — Ilwaco (6:00)

Bobby Carr departs CHS sideline

The sidelines at Mickey Clark Field will be a little less cool this fall.

An artist, a mentor, and a rock-solid dude always, Bobby Carr, who has coached football in Coupeville for nearly a decade, has resigned.

The move was confirmed this week by CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

A member of the 2006 Oak Harbor High School gridiron squad which won a 4A state title, Bobby Carr joined the Cow Town coaching fraternity when his dad, Marcus Carr, was hired as CHS head coach in 2018.

Carr and protege Peyton Caveness reflect on their success.

Bobby remained with the Wolves when the elder Carr departed to take the head coaching gig at Inglemoor in 2022, pairing up with former ‘Cat teammate Bennett Richter to lead the Wolves to continued success.

Under their tutelage, CHS advanced to the state playoffs, hosting Onalaska in a postseason rumble.

That was the first trip to the big dance for Wolf football in 32 years.

More recently, Carr helped guide the Wolves to a 35-6 win over South Whidbey this past fall to reclaim ownership of The Bucket.

Coupeville connection equals football excellence

Chase Anderson will be traveling East in June.

The Coupeville High School senior was named to the West Roster for the Earl Barden Classic, the annual all-star game which pits the top football players in classes 2A, 1A, 2B, and 1B.

The game will be played at Spokane’s East Valley High School Saturday, June 20, with a 1:00 PM kickoff.

Anderson, who was a First-Team All-Conference pick at three positions (quarterback, kicker, and linebacker), is listed as a running back on the all-star roster.

The West will be coached by Devin Snyder of Cascade Christian, while the East is led by Eric Berg of East Valley.

Coupeville’s top gun is the only Whidbey Island player and only Northwest 2B/1B League player to make the cut this year, and one of just two from this region, with Shia Webster of 2A Anacortes also included.

Two of Anderson’s teammates do have Coupeville connections, however, as cousins Lyal Viers and Andy Penrod from 1A Cedar Park Christian are both on the West roster as well.

Viers and Penrod are the sons of sisters (and CHS grads) Sarah and Stephanie Engle, respectively, while Andy’s dad is Videoville alumni Isaiah Penrod.

Grandparents include the “Dave’s” — former Coupeville Town Marshal Dave Penrod and the late, great Pastor Dave Engle.

For Anderson, the selection continues a trend of Wolf gridiron stars getting the call to the big game, as he follows in the footsteps of former Coupeville stars like Mike Bagby, Josh Bayne, Dominic Coffman, and Ryan Labrador.

Flag football, junior cheer programs offered

Get in on the ground floor.

Children ages 5-14 can take part in flag football and junior cheer programs being run at Camp Casey.

The season runs Mar. 5-May 9, with registration deadline set for Feb. 16. Cost is $100 per child.

The programs, run by YMCA of Snohomish County branches, focuses on “skill development, sportsmanship, and fun.”

Teams will practice once or twice a week, depending on the age group, with Saturday afternoon games kicking off Mar. 22.

All players receive a replica National Football league jersey and an NFL flag set, with each child guaranteed to play at least half of every game.

Northwest League football coaches honor six Wolves

He fought until the final play, the final yard, every time, and was rewarded for it.

Coupeville High School senior Chase Anderson was named an All-Conference First-Team selection at three positions, honored by Northwest 2B/1B League football coaches as a quarterback, kicker, and linebacker.

He was also nominated for the All-State game, with final rosters for that contest to be named at a later date.

Joining Anderson as a First-Team All-League player were seniors Camden Glover (Defensive Line) and Malachi Somes (Defensive Back) and juniors Davin Houston (Defensive Back) and Riley Lawless (Offensive Line and Defensive Line).

Houston also received Honorable Mention for his work at receiver, as did sophomore running back Liam Blas.
