DJ Moose and members of Mussel Flats and Ike and the Old Man were scheduled to perform at Coupeville’s New Year’s Eve bash.

Mother Nature wins this round.

With snow and ice coating Whidbey Island, a New Year’s Eve event planned for the Coupeville Rec Hall has been postponed.

The family-friendly affair, which is a fundraiser for the CHS Class of 2022, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 12.

“The safety of our community members comes first and foremost,” said event organizer Stephanie Grimm Streitler.

“I’m very saddened by this decision, but it has to be done. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

Tickets already purchased will be honored in February, or you can obtain a refund by contacting Streitler at (360) 622-6059.

Dena Royal, hanging out with daughter Adrianna.

A former Whidbey Island business owner who worked extensively with History Day participants is homeless after her boat sank Sunday at the Friday Harbor Marina.

Dena Royal was not on board the Macy when it went down, victim of a storm which featured 50+ MPH winds.

“We had the worst Nor’easter I’ve experienced in the past three winters,” she wrote on Facebook in the aftermath.

“A log or something must have broke through her hull during the storm.”

Royal’s boat, also her home, sank in a storm Sunday.

Royal, who owned and operated Whidbey Isle Yarns, Gifts and Teas — first in Oak Harbor, then in Coupeville — lived on the boat with her dog, Lilly.

Putting her in a worse situation, Progressive cancelled her comprehensive insurance in May because of the age of the boat.

The loss of her home hits hard for Royal.

“Macy wasn’t just a boat,” she wrote on Facebook. “She was my home, and I had poured my heart, soul, hard work, and $15k into upgrades over the past 2.5 years.

“Macy, you will be missed.”

Macy in better times.

Royal’s daughter, Adrianna, has started a GoFundMe to help her mom. For more info, or to donate, pop over to:

Led by their seniors, CHS girls basketball players are crushing their male counterparts during a holiday gift drive. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

A gift drive for those in need wraps up soon.

The Coupeville High School basketball teams are spearheading the event, with donation boxes in the gym lobby.

Friday night’s home doubleheader against Darrington — girls varsity at 5:15, boys at 7:00, no JV — offers a final chance for fans to bring gifts with them to a game.

The boxes will be pulled Dec. 15, with all donations going to the Holiday House North.

The Wolves are looking for unwrapped gifts which can be redistributed to families in Coupeville and Oak Harbor.

There are actually two boxes, as CHS girls and boys hoops programs are competing against each other to see who can bring in the most gifts.

Cookies are at stake, and, currently, the Wolf girls are crushing the boys like the Harlem Globetrotters squaring off with the Washington Generals.

Tourney winners “The Whidbey Golf Boys.”

Local golfers and business owners combined recently to honor the memory of Bennett Boyles and raise $10,000+ in his name.

The fifth edition of a memorial tournament for a young Coupeville basketball star who bravely fought cancer will benefit both the WhidbeyHealth Foundation and the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools.

The tournament drew 87 players, with “The Whidbey Golf Boys” taking top honors.
