Makana Stone (32)

Makana Stone, about to get all awesome and stuff. (John Fisken photo)

Week 20 belonged to Makana Stone.

The Coupeville High School junior was flat out sensational on the basketball court (like usual) and this time the big city folks paid attention, naming her the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association female 1A athlete of the week.

Stone torched the nets, hitting 68% of her shots as she averaged 20.5 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, three assists and a blocked shot as the Wolves won twice.

Coupeville is currently 13-5 overall and a pristine 7-0 in Olympic League play. Led by Stone and a strong senior six-pack, the Wolves have claimed their first league title since 2002.

The WIAA honors a male and female athlete from every level (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B and 1B) each week.

Stone is the second Wolf to nab the honor this school year, following in the footsteps of football star Josh Bayne.

Joining Stone as honorees were two basketball players who Coupeville faced this season, Anna Cook of La Conner and Jacqueline Case of Mount Vernon Christian.

The 8th graders are not impressed…

It’s their time.

The opening days of practice are done and the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams take the court for their first taste of competition this afternoon.

The Wolves will be in Langley for a jamboree (3 PM), before starting their eight-game regular season schedule at home Tuesday, Feb. 10 against Granite Falls.

Coupeville plays four of its first five at home (Feb. 12 against Langley, Feb. 25 against Sultan and March 2 against Lakewood), then closes with three straight on the road.

To get you prepped, a first look at the 20 young women who were hanging around the court when traveling photo man John Fisken swung by the gym the other day.

The team’s #1 fan, sophomore Aiden Crimmins, overcome by the excitement of the photo shoot, has to be carried away.

The best there’s ever been?

Possibly.

The six seniors who lead this year’s Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad are talented, successful and full of shenanigans.

On the court, they have busted out a 13-5 record (7-0 in Olympic League play), the most wins by a Wolf girls’ hoops teams in a decade.

Along the way, they also clinched the program’s first league title since 2002.

Off the court, they take it to another level entirely.

Super comfortable in front of the camera, the six-pack (Hailey Hammer, Julia Myers, Kacie Kiel, Monica Vidoni, Wynter Thorne and Madeline Strasburg) are always willing to go the extra mile for a photo op.

The day they depart will be a sad, sad day for those of us who like to draft off their good will and get a lot of page hits in return.

Friday night they will take their final bow at home, with Senior Night against Chimacum (5:15 tip).

We may never see their like again, but we did enjoy their time at Coupeville.

Thank you, ladies, for being you.

Port Townsend's Amelia Breithaupt. (John Fisken photo)

Port Townsend’s Amelia Breithaupt and her Redhawk JV teammates showed heart and commitment Tuesday night. Much respect to you all. (John Fisken photo)

You can lose a game without being losers.

The Port Townsend JV girls’ basketball team is proof of that.

Tuesday night they were only able to dress five players, which meant that the girls who walked on the court for the opening tip-off would still be out there four quarters and 32 minutes of action later.

That’s not easy for anyone, and it didn’t get easier.

Coupeville is enjoying its best girls’ basketball season in a very long time, and the Wolf JV is rolling right now.

Eight players strong, they did exactly what was expected and won their sixth straight game by a fair margin at 35-4.

But, there are two sides to every story, and while Coupeville fans are understandably thrilled with how the Wolves are playing, we can also take a moment to honor their opponents.

Tuesday night, five young women (Alex Norvell, Rita Sheldon-O’Neal, Taylor Tracer, Krishna Pithva and Amelia Breithaupt) stood tall and gave everything they had.

They never backed down, they fought until the final buzzer and, even when you could see the tiredness in their eyes and shoulders, they played on, heads high.

One, in particular, stood out the most.

Breithaupt, who, at five-feet even, is barely taller than her hair braids, played point guard all night for the Redhawks and never lost her smile.

She brought the ball up time and again against aggressive Wolf defenders, got knocked around, yet still found an ounce of energy to scoot back on defense in the game’s final minute.

The game was lost, a long time before that, but she refused to call it quits until the two teams exchanged post-game hand shakes. Smile still intact.

I don’t know Breithaupt, or her teammates, but I do know this, they earned unexpected fans tonight.

We will see you play again, young Redhawks, and your reputation will precede you.

To the Port Townsend coaches, parents and fans, be very, very proud of your young women. They have earned it.
