Dodging rain, racking up wins

Spring has fully sprung.

Maybe not in the weather category, as Mother Nature keeps everyone guessing as to her intentions, but enough games have been played that it’s time to once again kick into running weekly standings stories.

The week ahead adds another level of intrigue, with Northwest 2B/1B League teams squaring off against each other for the first time.

Coupeville High School baseball and softball clash with Friday Harbor twice — at home Tuesday, then on the road Thursday.

After that, the hardball squad wraps the week by hosting South Whidbey Saturday for a non-conference tilt.

Meanwhile, Wolf girls’ tennis is slated to (finally) host its first match on its new home courts Tuesday, with East Jefferson coming to town.

Then the netters hit the road Friday for a trip to Friday Harbor for the first of four clashes with the only other NWL school to play the sport.

Wrapping things up, CHS track is on the road twice, with a trip to Mount Vernon Wednesday for a league meet, and a trek to Stanwood Saturday for a freshman/sophomore showcase.

As we head into the great unknown, here’s where things sit as of Mar. 23:

Rain worries delay tennis home opener

Chalk another one up for Mother Nature.

The threat of rain has caused Coupeville High School girls’ tennis to move its home opener from Friday to next Tuesday, Mar. 25.

Things will kick off against East Jefferson at 3:30 PM, with Wolf softball and baseball also playing at home that day at 4:00 against Friday Harbor.

The tennis match will be the first one played on the school’s new courts, which weren’t finished in time for the Wolves to play at home at all during the 2024 season.

Tuesday’s forecast currently is for sun mixed with clouds and a high of 57 degrees.

And, unlike Friday’s gloomy outlook, the chances of rain are listed as virtually non-existent.

Netters swing away on opening day

Tennis balls are flying once more.

The weather was decent Tuesday, and the Coupeville High School girls’ net squad took advantage, traveling to Port Townsend for the season opener.

After a ferry trip, the Wolves clashed with East Jefferson, which is the mashup between former CHS league rivals Chimacum and Port Townsend.

The visitors swept the varsity singles, with the hosts bouncing back to take the doubles matchups, ultimately pulling out a tense 3-2 non-conference victory.

It was a good start for a Wolf team which has increased numbers from a year ago and will get to host matches this season after work on new courts prevented that from happening last spring.

In fact, Coupeville will play its first match on the courts which now sit next to the CHS gym this Friday, when East Jefferson returns the favor and travels to Cow Town for a rematch.

1st Singles — Tenley Stuurmans beat Rennie O’Donnell 6-2, 6-1

2nd Singles — Dahlia Lewis beat Juliette O’Hara 6-1, 6-0

1st Doubles — Brynn Parker/Ember Light lost to Lucia Fields/Gracie Witherwidge 6-1, 6-0

2nd Doubles — Kauri Hamilton/Sofia Phay lost to Liuia Lee/Brooke Tomasetti 6-3, 6-2

3rd Doubles — Delanie Lewis/Miles Gerber lost to Olivia Larson/Calliope Mosher 6-1, 6-0

 

JV:

4th Doubles — Samantha Wallace/Hailey Goldman lost to Zinna Blachley/Ursla Schmidt 7-1

5th Doubles — Rowan Stoner/Chloe Ferguson lost to Sienna V./Risespan 4-3

Bigger roster, better courts

If you build it, they will get to play on it … eventually.

When the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team opens its season Mar. 21 against Anacortes, it will be the first time the Wolves will play a match at home since spring 2023.

Between then and now, the school moved its courts from next to the bus barn across the street and next to the CHS gym.

Bad weather at the time delayed the building process, sending the Wolf netters on the road for every contest last spring.

With the CHS boys’ tennis program having shut down several years back after losing a numbers battle, the Anacortes match will be the first-time players in red and black will be back in official action on their own playing surfaces.

Leading the way will be freshman Tenley Stuurmans, who advanced to the state tourney as an 8th grader, while playing tennis for the first time.

She held up well in her two matches in Yakima against veteran foes, taking a set and almost advancing to day #2 of the championships.

Back for another run at glory, Stuurmans will be joined by fellow returning players Brynn Parker, Delanie Lewis, Kauri Hamilton, and Sofia Phay.

In a hugely encouraging note, Wolf coaches Tim Stelling and Starla Seal have added 10 newcomers to the roster, ranging from 8th graders to seniors.

The expanded squad will compete against Friday Harbor for a Northwest 2B/1B League crown, playing four times, while also clashing with bigger schools such as South Whidbey, Anacortes, King’s, and Granite Falls across a 10-match schedule.

With expanded numbers, and a chance to play matches at home, the Wolf coaches are excited to welcome spring on the often-windswept prairie.

“Goals for this season are embracing growth and development establishment!” Seal said.

“Our biggest strength is the positive energy all of the girls have had from the first day of practice! They are vibing and have a fun and strong and positive learning mindset!”

With double digit roster numbers again, Coupeville will be able to fill out a complete slate once again when it comes time to play matches.

“Areas of growth are establishing two more doubles teams,” Seal said. “We have a lot of new players and hence the establishment of our team is a goal.

“Otherwise, I’m very happy and excited for our season and new courts!”

Netters wrap season with banquet

The final shot has been hit, and varsity letters awarded.

Coupeville High School girls’ tennis coaches and players capped their unusual season — one in which they never had a home match thanks to work on new courts — with a banquet Wednesday night.

 

Honored with letters were:

Kauri Hamilton
Kaitlyn Leavell
Delanie Lewis
Brynn Parker
Skylar Parker
Sofia Phay
Rafaela Silva De Campos Conceicao
Tenley Stuurmans

 

Five of those eight can return next spring — when new CHS courts should finally be open — with seniors Leavell and Skylar Parker, as well as foreign exchange student Silva De Campos Conceicao departing.

Leading the returnees will be Stuurmans, who advanced to the state tournament as just an 8th grader.
