They’re in the driver’s seat now.

Taking advantage of weather which improved as the hours crawled by Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team managed to play a complete match against visiting Friday Harbor, pulling out a 3-2 win.

The victory lifts the Wolves to 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-1 overall and puts them ahead in the battle to win a conference crown.

With only two of the seven NWL schools playing the sport, Coupeville and Friday Harbor’s netters square off four times to determine the top dog.

The other three matches between the league rivals are scheduled to go down Apr. 17 and 29 and May 6.

There were serious doubts at the crack of dawn over whether Tuesday’s tilt would be able to be played, with wet courts in Cow Town and rumbling winds swaying the trees back and forth.

But Friday Harbor, wanting to get some court time in, charged on to the ferry and came anyway.

By match time, things had dried considerably, some blue sky had poked through the clouds, and the breeze — while still rumbling — was greatly reduced.

The Wolves swept the singles matches, with Tenley Stuurmans running her mark to 2-0 and Milana Light making her season debut in style, while a doubles victory for Aleksia Jump and Dahlia Miller was the difference in the match.

That duo is also off to a 2-0 start, with Coupeville’s next match a non-conference battle in Port Townsend Monday, Mar. 30, when the Wolves play East Jefferson.

Hailey Goldman teamed up with sister Hazel to win Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday’s results:

Varsity:

1st Singles — Tenley Stuurmans won 6-0, 6-1

2nd Singles — Milana Light won 6-0, 6-3

1st Doubles — Dahlia Miller/Aleksia Jump won 6-4, 6-2

2nd Doubles — Kauri Hamilton/Jovanah Villagomez lost 6-4, 6-2

3rd Doubles — Rowan Stoner/Jade Peabody lost 6-3, 6-3

Hazel Goldman and Co. will walk on by the bus Tuesday. (Julie Wheat photo)

Rain, rain, go away, we’ll play another day.

Mother Nature has been gunning for the Wolves since the start of “spring” sports and finally got ’em Tuesday.

The Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad was slated to travel to Granite Falls for a non-conference rumble, but never made it on the bus, as liquid sunshine washed away a day’s worth of athletics.

Also getting knocked off the schedule were softball and baseball games which would have featured Orcas Island joining CHS in traveling to the city known as “The Big Burn.”

Seriously, that’s what Wikipedia says about Granite. Look it up.

Coupeville’s tennis match has been rescheduled for Apr. 20, which should give the wet weather time to improve.

Dahlia Miller launches an ace. (Julie Wheat photos)

Decent weather, bright future.

A new season of Coupeville High School girls’ tennis kicked off Monday under partially sunny prairie skies, with not a drop of rain to be found in the vicinity.

That allowed the Wolves, who will boast an expanded roster of 20+ netters when everyone is eligible, to square off with East Jefferson across eight pro set matches while still allowing the visiting Rivals to catch the early ferry back home.

Coupeville’s foe, which is a mashup of players from two schools — Chimacum and Port Townsend — made off with a razor-thin 3-2 victory in the varsity part of the competition, while the Wolves won two of three JV rumbles.

The afternoon’s most tense tussle came at first varsity doubles, where new partners Dahlia Miller and Aleksia Jump teamed up to pull out a victory in a tiebreak in a match which went back-and-forth.

The Wolves were rolling in the early going, East Jefferson rallied late to force the tiebreaker, then the CHS duo excelled in the white-hot spotlight as players from both teams crowded around the fence.

Miller, a superb singles player last season, sprayed several impressive winners into the alleyways, while Jump, who moved to tennis from track and field, sealed the win with an emphatic put away at the net on match point.

Coupeville won three doubles matches on the day, while #1 singles player Tenley Stuurmans methodically picked apart her foe, mixing artful drop shots with overpowering deep hits, keeping her counterpart flustered for much of the match.

If the road weather matches the home weather, the Wolves will get right back at it Tuesday, with a planned trip to Granite Falls for another non-conference tilt.

On her way to deliver another winner.

1st Singles — Tenley Stuurmans beat Gracie W. 8-2

Adeline Maynes is ready to fling fastballs. Will Mother Nature cooperate? (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Making schedules for spring high school sports is a dangerous business.

Especially in western Washington state, where Mother Nature is usually up to shenanigans and views the attempted launching of outdoor seasons in March to be a bold, and often foolhardy, endeavor.

But we all go on, using pencils instead of pens.

So, here’s what seems to be in place for Coupeville squads as of Mar. 5, the fourth day of practice for softball, tennis, track, and baseball.

Will it all change? Likely as soon as I hit publish.

The dance continues.
