One more time. And why not?

Traditionally, if you’re an athlete, once you graduate from Coupeville High School, I stop running birthday stories for you here on the blog.

At that point, you’ve moved on, so it’s time to flip the spotlight onto the other 23,000 Wolves trying to elbow their way into the frame.

But, Jared Helmstadter, who celebrates a cake day today, only graduated a couple of weeks ago, and he’s one of the big success stories from our run here at Coupeville Sports, so we’re bending the rules.

Sometimes you need to do that for the great ones.

And Jared is, without a doubt, one of the biggies.

He first skipped into high school right after I kicked off Coupeville Sports in Aug. 2012, and, over the next four years, he was everywhere.

Even when I tried to change his last name to Helmstadler, with an L instead of a T, he never missed a beat.

The kid who shot into the world at week 26 (a modest two pounds at the time) grew up to be the only Wolf in the Class of 2016 to play a full 12 sports in his time at the school.

Four years of tennis, basketball and track later, he exited as arguably the best-liked, most-admired athlete in his class.

And I’m not saying that lightly.

His coaches adored him. His teammates raved about him.

Jared, much like classmate Makana Stone, transcended sports.

When he applied for the scholarships given out by local photographer John Fisken, one of the interview questions the paparazzi asked of each applicant was “If you don’t win, who do you want to see win?”

Every single applicant said the same name. Spoiler alert: it was Jared.

Helmstadter himself would admit he wasn’t the most talented athlete in his class, but he was justifiably proud that he put out as much effort, showed as much heart and cheered for each and every one of his teammates like no other.

When he talked about the best moments of his prep career, he always went to team moments, slices of time when he was part of something bigger than himself.

Through four years of covering Jared, I saw a young man who will not be beaten down by rough times, who will always get up and fight, who will always look for the best in everyone around him.

The guy is, was, and will always be, a true class act and it really was an honor to be a small part of telling the world about him.

Happy birthday, Mr. Helmstadter. May the best be yet to come.

Kenzi LaRue

LaRue

LaRue shares a laugh with volleyball teammate Katrina McGranahan.

vb

Puttin’ in work as a a photo-bomber.

Kenzi LaRue is not shy.

Or, if she is, she hides it really, really well.

One of the most outgoing of all Wolf athletes, the Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, is a big-energy, big-talent fireball who lights up the universe around her.

When she’s not dropping spikes for the volleyball squad or swatting winners for the Wolf tennis team, Kenzi is a singer and actress who’s busy chasing those dreams with lil’ sis Chloe.

While her older brother, former CHS football legend Caleb Valko, was fairly low-key, Kenzi, without a doubt, is here to put on a show every day.

She seems to enjoy every moment of her life, and she’s entertaining to cover as a reporter, since she’s constantly zinging around, delivering monologues, a bit of smack talk, and a running commentary on life to anyone in her sight.

Will she hit it big in life?

You never know. Acting and singing are tough gigs to break into for anyone, even someone with as much charm as Miss LaRue.

But, regardless of whether we one day see her name in lights, I’m pretty sure she’ll go on to do something to amaze us all.

Kenzi, for all the over-the-top theatrics, seems like a genuinely kind, caring person, especially to her close friends and family.

Take a look at any of the many photos snapped of her in action for the Wolves, and she always (and I mean ALWAYS) looks like she is having the time of her life.

So happy birthday, Kenzi, and keep swinging for those stars.

Julian Welling lays down the law: "There had better be cake! That's all I'm saying..." (John Fisken photo)

"Wait, there is cake, right?"

“Wait, there is cake, right?”

"There is cake!!!!!!! It's mah birthday!!! Dance all day and party all night!!!"

Julian Welling is one of the best athletes at Coupeville High School, hands down.

A slugger on the baseball diamond and a ferocious hitter on the gridiron, JoJo, who will be a junior in the fall, is the real deal, a talented guy with size, strength and a motor that runs hot and heavy.

But, if you want to know what separates him from the pack, what truly makes him special, you have to step back and watch him when he’s NOT playing.

Watch him when he’s in the stands, cheering on his lil’ sis, Melia, during her little league games.

Playing for the Venom, who went 13-3 this spring in Juniors action, Melia, who had very little experience coming in, made huge strides at the plate.

As her confidence built, boosted in large part by very vocal encouragement from her brother, she became much more aggressive at the plate and started ripping some liners.

The biggest blow came against South Whidbey, when she launched a game-busting two-run double to left that caused Julian to come unglued.

Bouncing on the top row of the stands, waving his blanket left and right, big bro bellowed “That just made my day, Melia!!”

The grin that split his sister’s face as she rocked back and forth while astride second base didn’t leave for the remainder of the game.

At which point Julian came flying around the side of the dugout to grab her in a bear hug and carry her off like a trophy he had just won.

It’s moments like that which make Welling, who celebrates a birthday today, one of the true bright spots in Wolf Nation.

He is as friendly and outgoing as anyone wearing the red and black these days, a fun-loving big kid who charges into battle with a grin on his face and light-hearted mischief in his heart.

Welling is also, though, a true standup guy, a young man who showed a lot with how he conducted himself during what could have been a negative time at the start of this year’s baseball season.

A person can complain when things don’t go their way or they can, day in and day out, show their coaches, in big ways and small ways, why they deserve to wear that uniform.

When Julian made his season debut, taking the ball in relief in his first game, he was being rewarded for not taking the easy way out.

For standing up and acting like a man when it mattered, even if that stung at times.

So, when I think of Welling, I absolutely acknowledge his talent.

But I really hail him for the person he is — the proud big brother who dotes on his sister, the fun-loving entertainer and the guy who admits mistakes, then turns them into positives.

A lot of people are good athletes.

Julian is much more than that, and as a Wolf fan, I am glad I can claim him as one of our guys.

Happy birthday, Mr. Welling.

Birthday buddies Matt Hilborn (left) and Risen Johnson put in work. (John Fisken photos)

Birthday buddies Matt Hilborn (left) and Risen Johnson put in work. (John Fisken photos)

They are big reward athletes.

Risen Johnson and Matt Hilborn, who share a birthday today, are both guys who dance on the line between huge success and huge failure, but, more often than not, pull it off for the win.

Hilborn, who just wrapped his freshman baseball season at Coupeville High School by being tabbed as an All-League selection, compiled some astounding plays at third base for the Wolves.

Quick to charge the ball, quick to believe he could make any throw, even when the throw was going to have be a laser launched while Hilborn’s body twisted in mid-air, he had some slick glove moves.

Like most younger players, he had his ups and his downs, but when he was up he showed you just what rival coaches appreciated so much.

A key part of the first Coupeville baseball squad to win a league title in 25 years, Hilborn, who is also a rising star on the gridiron, has a bright future for the red and black.

Johnson, by contrast, just wrapped his run at CHS, graduating with the Class of 2016 a few weeks back.

Before he went, he gave us two electrifying seasons on the basketball hardwood, pulling off moves that few, if any, Wolves have ever been able to accomplish.

A point-scoring machine (and an underrated defender), Johnson could pull up and nail the jumper over outstretched arms.

But more often than not, he preferred to get his buckets by employing a heapin’ helpin’ of Showtime.

Ripping down court, slicing ‘n dicing backpedaling defenders, gliding through the air and somehow getting the ball to drop off the backboard when he threw it up through a maze of arms at the last second, he was flat-out fun to watch.

A soft-spoken fashion plate off the court, Risen always played with great joy, and the only downside is we didn’t get a full four years from him.

Maybe he’ll grow a beard and sneak back into school disguised as a foreign exchange student…

Except one whirlin’, twirlin’, eyeball-poppin’ display of mad hoops skills and everyone would know the truth. Oh well.

For now, we’ll just thank Risen for making the last two years a regular thrill show and wish him and Matt a happy joint cake day.

May your birthdays be as exciting as your style of play.

Jae LeVine (John Fisken photos)

Jae LeVine savors the sweet, sweet taste of chasing down a wayward runner. (John Fisken photos)

Jae shares a moment with Kayla Rose early in their volleyball careers.

Sharing a moment with Kayla Rose early in their volleyball careers.

“Run … on me?!?!?!? FOOL!!!!!!!!!”

Jae "Flash" LeVine

Jae “Flash” LeVine — she’s kind of a big deal.

Bad things happen, for a lot of reasons, and terrible people get a lot more of the headlines than they deserve.

We can’t ignore the terror, the tragedy and the stupidity of the world around us, but one of the best ways to deal with it is to embrace that which is good.

To savor triumph, to reward kindness and effort, to celebrate the wonderful people who light up the world around them, instead of dampening it.

Which is why it is so nice to spend today talking about Joltin’ Jae Levine, who, in words, action and spirit, is a truly remarkable young woman.

It would not matter if she had never played a sport; she would still be one of my favorites.

Jae, who celebrates a birthday today, is a medical miracle, a fighter who has never backed down from her battle with serious heart issues, yet has never been defined by her health.

Instead, the woman of 1,000 nicknames (Mighty Mite, JaeBird and the current favorite, Flash) has always been defined by her sunny nature, the sweetness of her spirit, the way she lights up every room she enters.

Whether on the stage, as part of the CHS theater troupe, pounding on the drums like John Bonham or gunning down runners from second base for the Wolf softball squad, LeVine is a winner.

But it’s the small moments which make her a legend.

The way she slides along the bench, creeping up on a teammate having a bad game, suddenly bear-hugs them, then is gone again almost before they register what happened, leaving behind only a Cheshire Cat grin hanging in the air.

You know that moment on an oppressively hot day, when suddenly an unexpected cool breeze ripples past, and suddenly the world becomes an entirely new, happy place?

Jae is that breeze, come to life.

She picks up other people’s spirits with a smile, a quiet zinger or two, or just her mere presence.

Now, I can’t tell you Jae’s perfect. I’m sure, like everyone, she has her bad moments.

But, having been around her for the last four years, I can say, without a doubt, she is one of the most entertaining, truly lovely people I have met in the world of prep sports.

There is such a genuine sweetness to how she operates on a daily basis, such an embrace of joy, that it is truly awe-inspiring.

So, ask me, do I play favorites?

Of course I do.

And Jae LeVine is up there in that top 1% of my favorites.

When she’s at bat, I am, internally at least (have to maintain at least some journalistic integrity), rooting as hard for her as I do for anyone.

I want to see her succeed and I am thrilled when she does.

Because it’s karma coming back her way, and that is beautiful to see.

She offers hope, love and friendship to the world, a whip-smart wisenheimer who is one of the strongest, kindest young women you will ever meet.

Happy birthday, Miss LeVine; I hope your dreams come true and you have the chance to spread the gospel of Jae far and wide in the coming years.

We are so lucky here in Coupeville to have you be even a small slice of our lives, and I hope you always know how much we all think of you.
