Oak Harbor firefighters head into the heart of the blaze. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

It’s not all about sports.

Taking a break from athletics, photo whiz kid John Fisken wandered into a burning building to capture the Oak Harbor Fire Department at work.

The event was a training burn at SE Ely and Barrington, an operation which got rid of an eyesore of a house and gave firefighters valuable time in the middle of a blaze.

Fisken was fully geared up for the day, allowing him to get close to the action (within reason), as were city councilmen Bryan Stucky, Eric Marshall, and Shane Hoffmire.

To see everything Fisken shot, pop over to:

You have a say in the direction taken by the Coupeville School District.

School Board members are currently working on a new strategic plan, which will remain in place for the next five years.

The plan’s goal is to “clearly define mission, goals, and vision for our district as we look ahead to the future.”

With that in mind, a public meeting will be held next Thursday, Apr. 21 at 5:30 PM in the Coupeville Middle/High School Performing Arts Center.

Input is being sought from Coupeville students, families, staff, and community members.

A Strategic Planning Committee is also being set up, and you can apply by popping over to:

It’s (almost) growing season.

With spring peeking around the corner, the Deer Lagoon Grange in Bayview is hosting a seed swap this Saturday, Feb. 12.

The event, which is free and open to all, runs from 10 AM-2 PM.

What’s a seed swap?

Well, exactly what it sounds like, and a lot more.

Seeds of all sizes, shapes, and varieties will be swapped, and much gardening chatter will be heard.

You do NOT have to bring seeds to participate, though the more, the merrier.

Plants will be shared in addition to the seeds, along with charts on when it’s best to plant on Whidbey Island.

“Get inspired. Live the rural life of Whidbey,” said event organizer Sarah Kirkconnell. “Dream of warmer days in your garden … or the pots on your deck.

“Almost everyone can grow … even if you swear you have a black thumb.”
