Go to enough Coupeville High School/Middle School/community sports events, and you’re sure to see John Fisken (and his camera) hanging around.

The photo whiz snaps away and sells his work on cascadeathletics.com. And, is nice enough to send a bunch of the pics my way, as we jointly tell the Canadian-owned “local” newspapers where they can shove it.

A percentage of the sales from his photos goes to fund scholarships for local student athletes.

He’s done it for Oak Harbor High School in years past and he’s launching his inaugural award(s) for CHS this spring.

Which is why it’s important to note that the deadline for applications — April 1 — fast approaches.

Wolf seniors can obtain an application from the CHS counseling office. The top five applicants will be interviewed.

Requirements for the scholarships (the pot is pushing $500, and could go higher with spring sports, so there will likely be two awards):

*Must have participated in at least two sports for all four years of high school

*Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

*Must NOT be getting any type of athletic scholarship from any college

*Must submit a 500 word essay, “How Sports Made Me A Better Person”

The Big Hurt and Coach V hug it out.

Streubel and Dustin Van Velkinburgh, one of the coaches who taught him the game.

Nick Streubel is staying in-state.

The Coupeville High School senior lineman, a 1A all-state player this past season, verbally committed to Central Washington University Sunday.

He expects to sign with them, accept their scholarship offer and take his football skills to Ellensburg.

Streubel and parents David and Nanette made an official recruiting trip to the campus this weekend and came away impressed with what they saw.

“I’ve always loved Central from when I went there for footall camp as a freshman and loved it ever since,” Nick Streubel said. “The coaching staff is great and fun to be around, as well.”

The Wildcats will be playing for a new coach, having recently hired Ian Shoemaker from a field of 55 applicants.

He spent the past six seasons as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. While he was there, the Huskies made the playoffs three of the last four years.

CWU, which competes at the NCAA Division II level, has won the conference championship in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference seven of the last 11 seasons. They went 7-4 in 2013.

"It's true!!"

“It’s true!!”

There is money to be made here.

Coupeville High School senior athletes are eligible for a new scholarship that is being offered by Whidbey Island photographer John Fisken starting this year.

Fisken, whose work can be found at http://www.cascadeathletics.com/index.php?district=1&league=2, will fund the scholarship(s) off of money raised from purchases of his photos.

The more sales, the higher the scholarship amount. The higher the amount, the chance it might be split into two scholarships.

To be eligible, a Wolf athlete needs to meet the following criteria:

*Be a full-time CHS student-athlete

*Have participated in at least two sports per year for all four years of high school

*NOT be getting any financial assistance from any college or university for sports

*Minimum 3.0 GPA

*Write a 500 word essay “How Sports Made Me A Better Person”

Interested Wolf athletes can get applications and more info at the CHS counseling office.

John Fisken and son.

Did Aimee Bishop pay this kid?!?!

Did Aimee Bishop pay this kid?!?!

John Fisken is a near-constant presence at Coupeville High School games.

Bouncing between the Wolves and his hometown Oak Harbor Wildcats, the photographer is always on the scene, clicking away in rain and shine.

Now he’d like to give something back, but he needs your help. Fisken already has a scholarship program set up at OHHS and he’d like to create a similar one for athletes at CHS.

The scholarship, which would start next school year, would be funded by half of any photo sales he makes at cascadeathletics.com, which includes photos bought by Coupeville parents and fans or opponents.

This year, sales of photos at Wolf events have also come from South Whidbey, Archbishop Thomas Murphy and King’s supporters, and those dollars would count towards Coupeville’s total.

The scholarship will kick in if Coupeville sales total $500 or more, with half of any money raised going to the scholarship.

Fisken is aiming his award at the athlete who puts out a strong effort, year-in and year-out, with an emphasis on the role players, not the stars.

The criteria for the scholarship:

Must have competed in at least two sports, per year, for all four years of high school.

Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 with no grade below a C.

Submit a 1-page essay, “Why Sports Have Made Me A Better Person.”

If enough photos are sold and the scholarship triggers, finalists will also have a personal interview.

So now, all that needs to happen is for enough parents to stop poaching photos off of Facebook and pay the man for the professional photographs he takes.

Do that, and you’ll be giving back to your own athletes.
