Wolf boys atop league standings

It was the perfect storm, if you wanted very few games played.

The aftereffects of snow and ice mixed with the never-ending pandemic shuffle to keep most Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams off the court this past week.

On the boys side of things, only one of nine scheduled games was actually played, with Coupeville running La Conner off the floor.

Things were slightly more active for girls hoops squads, with an emphasis on the word slightly.

La Conner KO’d Coupeville’s girls, while Mount Vernon Christian blasted Concrete a few days later.

Then, Saturday night, La Conner broke triple-digits, shellacking Concrete in a savage 104-14 win.

Other than that, six of nine scheduled games failed to have a tip-off.

The week ahead is pretty barren, as well, at least for Coupeville, which currently only has one set of games on the schedule.

The Wolves host MVC Tuesday, Jan. 11, with the boys game a showdown for sole possession of first-place in the NWL.

After that, barring pesky Covid positives, or frogs raining down from the skies, CHS goes full-tilt, with four games in five days between Jan. 18-22.

Maybe.

Hit pause, marinate in moment

The CHS girls are in a second-place tie heading into the holidays.

And now, a break.

The Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams reached the holiday shutdown in different fashion, but both are sitting pretty in the standings.

The Wolf boys had their final two games of 2021 — including a first-place battle with Mount Vernon Christian — postponed due to Covid concerns.

Meanwhile, the CHS girls did make it on to the court to play MVC, but also saw a non-conference duel with South Whidbey preempted.

All of the missing games are expected to be rescheduled.

Unless those contests land earlier on an altered schedule than expected, neither Wolf squad will be back on the floor in game action until Jan. 4.

For now, Coupeville can prep for 2022 knowing its boys are in first-place in the Northwest 2B/1B League, and its girls are just a game off of the same status.

Bring on the eggnog, and marinate in the moment.

First place suits them

Livin’ large in the ritzy part of town.

That’s where the Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams are right now, with both the Wolf girls and boys sitting in first place in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

The teams are a combined 4-0 in conference action, and 7-1 overall heading into the final week of action in 2021.

Coupeville travels to Concrete Tuesday, Dec. 14, then meanders to Mount Vernon Christian Dec. 17.

Wrapping up the first part of the hoops season with non-conference showdowns against South Whidbey Dec. 18, the Wolf squads have a rare split.

Coupeville’s boys will be at home, while the girls make the epic journey to Langley.

After that, both teams will practice, but not play for a bit, as the holidays toss in a break.

Games don’t return until Jan. 4, with the majority of the season’s contests playing out in 2022.

That’s a wrap, folks

Logan Downes and the Wolves finished the season with a win against a Seattle-based team.

We’ve reached the finish line.

Saturday’s state cross country meet marked the end of fall sports for Coupeville High School, so today’s standings are the last you’ll see until basketball season gets going.

Not all Northwest 2B/1B League teams are done yet, with La Conner volleyball heading to Yakima to make a run at a third-straight 2B state title.

Darrington’s spikers, who Coupeville beat twice this season, are also off to state, but at the 1B level.

The Loggers benefited from taking part in a 10-team District 1 tourney which offered up three tickets to the big dance.

Knocking off NWL foe Orcas Island in the third-place match Saturday, Darrington joins Grace Academy and Shoreline Christian in advancing.

Despite finishing ahead of the Loggers in the regular season, Coupeville had a tougher postseason draw, with just three 2B schools competing for one trip to state.

Also still in play are a bunch of soccer squads, with six NWL teams making the cut for what are combined 1B/2B state tourneys.

On the boys side, Orcas Island, Providence Classical Christian, Mount Vernon Christian, and Friday Harbor are still alive, while MVC and Friday Harbor’s girls teams play on as well.

But here in Coupeville, it’s time to head into the gym.

End of the trail in sight

William Davidson and Co. are hoping for one more game.

Things are winding down.

As we head into November, fall sports are all but done for Coupeville High School.

Boys and girls soccer wrapped their seasons during the week which just ended, while volleyball, cross country and (maybe) football have a smidge left to play.

The Wolf spikers are off to the district tourney Nov. 3, where they’ll open against Auburn Adventist Academy.

Win, and Coupeville faces off with two-time defending 2B state champs La Conner later that night for a trip to the big dance.

Cross country sends three runners — Claire Mayne, Mitchell Hall, and Helen Strelow — to state Nov. 6, while CHS football seeks a foe for a crossover game between schools which missed the playoffs.

After that, it’s off to the gym for basketball season.
