Conlisk puts some zing in his step

Every day a new adventure.

Running in his fourth indoor track meet as a collegiate athlete Saturday, Coupeville grad Danny Conlisk vied in three events, including one he hadn’t tried since his middle school days.

Now a freshman at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, an NCAA D-II school, the former Wolf ran in the 60, 400, and 4 x 400 at the Myrle Hanson Memorial Open at Black Hills State University in Spearfish.

Running the second leg in the relay, he helped his Hardrockers squad to a 3rd place finish, as they combined to hit the line in three minutes, 33.96 seconds.

Conlisk also claimed 4th in the 400, finishing in 53.18, and 10th in the 60 in 7.37.

The last time he ran the short race was back in his days at Coupeville Middle School.

Saturday’s race attracted five schools, with Black Hills welcoming SDSM&T, MSU Billings, Rocky Mountain College, and Dickinson State to town.

The Hardrockers get right back at it next weekend, as they travel to Minnesota State University-Mankato Feb. 8 for the Ted Nelson Classic.

Before beginning his collegiate career, Conlisk built himself quite a legend in Cow Town.

During his days at CHS, he ran cross country and track, made it to state in both sports, and won a pair of state titles in track.

Wander into the gym foyer and you’ll also see the name Conlisk all over the track and field record board, as he set school-bests in the 100, 200, and 400 as a senior.

Three meets in, and he’s getting faster.

Coupeville High School grad Danny Conlisk, who’s now a freshman at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, continues to tear up the track during his first collegiate season.

Saturday, Conlisk and his Hardrocker teammates were in Spearfish at Black Hills State University for the Dave Little Invitational.

While there, the former Wolf ran in the 200 and the 4 x 400, setting a college PR in his solo event.

Conlisk finished 7th in the 200, hitting the line in 24.03 seconds.

He also ran the second leg on an all-freshman relay unit which claimed 4th place in the day’s prime team-up.

The Hardrockers were competing against five other schools Saturday, with MSU Billings, Rocky Mountain College, Chadron State, and Dickinson State joining SDSM&T and the meet hosts.

Conlisk and Co. return to the same track next Saturday, February 1 for the Myrle Hanson Memorial Open.

During his time in Coupeville, Conlisk was a two-time state champ, winning titles in the 200 and 400 as a senior.

He holds CHS records in the 100, 200, and 400.

Schedule your spring afternoons

The upcoming spring sports season, which kicks off March 2, is the finale for both the 2019-2020 school year, and for Coupeville’s two-year run in the North Sound Conference.

When a new school year rolls around in the fall, CHS will have dropped down a classification, from 1A to 2B, and will be off to rejoin old-school rivals in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

But, before we get there, five Wolf teams still have a season to play, with one squad — the softball sluggers — seeking to exit with back-to-back league titles.

As you peruse the schedules below, know that Mother Nature will undoubtedly wreak havoc with them at some point.

So, use them as a jumping off point, but also keep an eye out for changes, which you can find at a couple of places.

In the varsity schedules below, asterisks indicate a league game, and to the surprise of almost everyone, four of the five Wolf spring teams have more home games than road trips.

And, while track and field is the only sport which will spend more time on the bus than hanging out in its own grandstand, the program has three home meets, which is still pretty dang good.

Cold temps, hot times

Good thing he competes indoors.

For those who thought Coupeville was cold this past week, former Wolf track star Danny Conlisk has you beaten.

The two-time state champ is now a freshman at NCAA D-II South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, and Saturday he and his Hardrocker teammates were running in Chadron, Nebraska.

At the start of their meet, the outdoor temps were in the very low 20’s, which is why this is the indoor portion of the college track season, and not the outdoor.

Back in action after a month-plus break, Conlisk was one of the fastest freshmen in attendance at the Chadron State College Don Holst Open Meet.

He claimed 6th in the 400, hitting the tape in 53.71 seconds, while also placing 12th, out of a field of 24 runners, in the 200.

His time in the shorter race was 24.24.

Conlisk was the fastest freshman in the 400 field, and the fourth-fastest frosh in the 200.

SDMT competed against Black Hills State, Montana State-Billings, MSU Denver and the meet hosts.

While there was a 41-day gap between Conlisk’s first and second collegiate meets, things will be much busier from this point on.

The Hardrockers return to action at the BHSU Dave Little Invitational in Spearfish, South Dakota next Saturday, January 25, with five meets before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 28-29.

After another break, the outdoor track season begins Mar. 27.

During his time in Coupeville, Conlisk was a standout track and cross country runner, advancing to the state championships in both sports.

He set school records in the 100, 200, and 400 as a senior last spring, then won state titles in the 200 and 400.

Conlisk takes skills to next level

It’s a whole new world for Danny Conlisk.

The Coupeville High School grad, a two-time state champion during his days as a Wolf, made his college track and field debut Saturday.

Running in the Yellow Jacket Holiday Classic at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota, Conlisk claimed a 1st in the 4 x 4 and a 2nd in the 400.

A freshman at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, he was running on an inside track for the first time.

His school has an outdoor facility, but the Hardrockers begin with the indoor season, before moving to the traditional outdoor season in the spring.

Conlisk’s first collegiate race was the 400, and he blitzed to a time of 52.40 seconds.

“Not a bad start,” said mom Dawnelle. “He said the corners were tight. Six turns vs. his normal four.”

Conlisk closed out the meet running the second leg on a relay unit which hit the tape in 3:29.31.

The next meet for the Hardrockers arrives Jan. 18, when they travel to Nebraska for the Chadron Invite.
