In the words of one James Brown

Hey! Gotta, gotta payback!
(The big payback)
Revenge! I’m mad!
(The big payback)
Got to get back!

I need some get-back!
Payback!
Payback! (The big payback)
That’s it! Payback!

Whether they cued up some 1973 funk or not, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad got that sweet, sweet payback Tuesday night.

Avenging their only loss of the season, the Wolves rallied to beat host Mount Vernon Christian 15-25, 25-16, 16-14, just the way coach Ashley Menges likes it.

The victory lifts the JV spikers to 6-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-1 overall heading into a home showdown Thursday with La Conner.

It also pushes Menges career winning percentage to an even .700, as the fifth-year coach is 42-18 since taking the reins of the second squad.

The Wolves watch the action unfold.

The first time the teams faced off, in mid-September, Coupeville actually won more points (62-61), but MVC escaped, nailing down two of three sets.

This time out, it was the Wolves taking both the moral victory and the victory-victory.

“It was a slow start to the night, and we definitely weren’t all there to begin the day, but it’s good to see they can turn it around,” Menges said.

“Something we always want to emphasize is that we get better with every set, which is what they did tonight and I’m very glad to see.

“They also took what I said pregame and started with that first point.

“As always, there’s more to work on, but for now I’m glad to see them pull out a win.”

They excel under fire.

Hours after rallying to beat Okanogan in five sets Friday to stay undefeated in regular season play, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad returned to the Eastern Washington courts for a state tourney-like experience.

Playing in a tournament hosted by Liberty of Spangle Saturday, the Wolves went 4-2 against high-grade competition.

CHS beat Davenport (2-1), Omak (2-1) and Warden twice (2-0 both times) while falling to Liberty (2-0) and Oakesdale (2-0).

The losses were “both matches we would like to have back,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore.

“But that would be part of the lesson learned: play to potential against every possible matchup.

“I think the girls are pretty excited about the experience overall and as we debriefed today in practice, I’m hoping we have a clear vision moving forward.”

One of many celebrations for the Wolves this season.

Coupeville (8-0 overall, 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play) travels to Mount Vernon Christian (6-4, 2-3) Tuesday, then hosts La Conner (6-4, 5-1) Thursday.

As they chase a league crown and set themselves up for postseason success, a chance to play in a high-caliber mid-season tourney offers great rewards.

“The tournament was a really productive experience for the team,” Whitmore said.

“The timing was great because it was into the season enough where you’ve found a bit of a rhythm and lineup(s), so you aren’t going from scratch, but also with enough of the season left that you can make adjustments and work on those lessons learned.

While the wins and losses Saturday don’t affect anyone’s overall record, the time on the floor was invaluable.

“We definitely learned some lessons,” Whitmore said.

“As a team, we pretty much agree upon most of the things that need work and so we will attack those goals as we push in this half of the season.

“We definitely got better at a few key areas for future growth and having played against a few teams we could potentially see down the road, that experience will pay dividends in the end.”

Tourney stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 26 digs, 1 assist
Teagan Calkins — 33 kills, 12 digs, 1 assist, 2.5 block assists, 10 aces
Mia Farris — 35 kills, 55 digs, 1 assist, 0.5 block assists, 4 aces
Jada Heaton — 4 kills, 6 digs, 1.5 block assists
Katie Marti — 3 kills, 28 digs, 126 assists, 1 block assist, 4 aces
Madison McMillan — 23 kills, 39 digs, 1 assist, 4 aces
Lyla Stuurmans — 39 kills, 31 digs, 2 solo blocks, 2 block assists, 8 aces
Tenley Stuurmans — 11 digs, 2 assists

They left their mark on the big city.

Playing with a fiery passion Monday, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads swept two matches in Everett from private school foes.

Knocking off host Northshore Christian Academy twice, the Wolves nabbed their first W’s of the season, kicking off a busy final week.

How the day played out:

Level 1:

Everything was clicking for the Wolves during a 25-13, 25-11, 15-7 win.

“The players were finally executing the things that we have been working on really hard at practice,” said CMS coach Cris Matochi.

“Our passing was much more efficient, and we were able to use our offense,” he added.

“Our serving was by far the best we have served this season.”

Cassie Powers and Rhylee Inman paced the team with three kills apiece, while Emma Leavitt was a service machine, ripping off a team-high 13 aces.

Cameron Van Dyke (7), Kennedy O’Neill (3), Inman (1), and Powers (1) also tallied aces, as Coupeville controlled the match from the line.

The Wolves got big contributions from everyone, with Zariyah Allen (five digs) and Laurel Crowder (two kills) also earning praise.

Zariyah has grown into a fantastic libero and she gets better every time she steps on the court,” Matochi said.

Laurel also had a fantastic match,” he added.

“It is so impressive to see such a young player not being intimidated and playing at that level.”

With five matches down and three left to play, Matochi is thrilled to see his young charges show continued growth.

“I am so proud of our teams today,” he said.

“It was so good see them have confidence and realize how much potential they have.”

Level 2:

Fierce serving sparked the Wolves to a 25-20, 25-20, 4-15 victory.

“This was our first win of the season and Cris, the girls, and I were pretty excited,” said Wolf coach Kristina Hooks.

Leavitt, Crowder, and Annabelle Cundiff peppered their rivals with nasty serves, while Scarlett Spencer, Olivia Martin, and Emily Rains had “some amazing passing tonight.”

“It’s Emily’s first year playing and I’m really excited to see how her skills progress,” Hooks said.

Level 3:

Northshore only had two teams, so Coupeville’s third squad had the day off.

Next up:

Coupeville hits the road twice more this week, jetting off to Sultan Wednesday, Oct. 16, then trekking to Granite Falls the next afternoon for a rescheduled match.

The season comes to a close at home the following Monday, Oct. 21, when CMS hosts South Whidbey in a clash between next-door neighbors.

Leg one of their Eastern Washington road trip was a success.

Forced to rally for the first time this season, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad roared from behind Friday to topple Okanogan in five action-packed sets.

The 13-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-10 non-conference win, coming at Liberty High School in Spangle, lifts the Wolves to 8-0.

That’s the second-best start in program history, behind just the 2004 team which went 10-0 and was ranked #1 in the state polls.

And now the Wolves, who are one of just two undefeated teams left in 2B, get another major test Saturday.

They’ll put aside their won/loss record for a day and participate in the Liberty Tournament, featuring a killer’s row of teams in a state tourney-style setting.

“The girls are going to need to pull it together tomorrow, already having played a five-set match and find a way to stay focused and fresh throughout the long day tomorrow,” said CHS coach Cory Whitmore.

Friday’s win, coming against one of the toughest squads in 2B year in and year out, was a great start.

A Coupeville team which hadn’t dropped a set during regular season play, entering the day at 21-0, found itself in a hole and had to respond.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Taylor Brotemarkle keeps the offense hoppin’.

“The reverse sweep was fun to get,” Whitmore said. “Along with some great experience against a good team.

“I’m proud of our resiliency and how we kept improving as the match went on, even into the fifth set.”

Key was getting something positive from everyone on the floor.

“We passed really well to get Katie (Marti) into a good spot so we could set Lyla (Stuurmans) and Teagan (Calkins),” Whitmore said.

“All three went off for double-doubles and went to work tonight.

“But everyone played their role at critical times and put it together.”

Friday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 13 digs
Teagan Calkins — 14 kills, 11 digs, 1 block assist, 2 aces
Mia Farris — 9 kills, 20 digs, 1 assist, 1 ace
Jada Heaton — 5 kills, 1 dig, 1 block assist
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 11 digs, 46 assists, 2 block assists, 2 aces
Madison McMillan — 3 kills, 13 digs, 1 assist, 1 block assist
Lyla Stuurmans — 21 kills, 11 digs, 1 solo block, 3 block assists, 1 ace
Tenley Stuurmans — 8 digs

Arms, legs … Katie Marti (15) has many weapons at her disposal. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

One leg to rule them all.

The limb in question belongs to Coupeville High School senior Katie Marti, and she used it to pull off an unusual save/assist combo during a recent volleyball win.

Now, as the Wolves take their pristine 7-0 record to Eastern Washington to play Okanogan Friday night, that play is one of three hailed as a Play of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.
