Beat the best, soar above the rest.

After sweeping Darrington, viewed as the #3 team in 1B, Thursday night, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad has jumped from #7 to #2 in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2B rankings.

The Wolves, now 5-0 in matches and 15-0 in sets, are nestled right behind Adna (6-0), and right in front of Manson (6-1) and Tonasket (7-1) according to the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).

So, they’ve got that going for them, which is nice.

And then there was one.

A day that started with three teams still unbeaten in Northwest 2B/1B League varsity volleyball action ended with just one squad still spotless.

That team?

Coupeville High School, which pasted visiting Darrington 25-21, 25-11, 25-16 Thursday to get to 4-0 in conference play, 5-0 overall.

The Wolves, who have won all 15 sets they have played in regular season action, are in the driver’s seat right now.

CHS sits a game-and-a-half up on Mount Vernon Christian (2-1) in the NWL, a team they have already beaten in their first meeting.

After that, it’s a logjam, with Darrington, La Conner, and Orcas Island all at 1-1, while Concrete is 0-2 and Friday Harbor 0-3.

Coupeville is off until next Thursday, Oct. 3, when it hosts Orcas.

While the Wolves still have six league matches left, the week that was, was pretty dang spiffy.

Coming off a straight-sets road win over the Evil Empire (La Conner), Coupeville welcomed Darrington to town for the lone meeting this season between the schools.

The Loggers, one of two 1B schools in the conference, were 5-0 overall entering the night, and feature some lanky big hitters who can drop the thunder and the lightning.

To which the Wolves said, you ain’t seen nothing yet, with Katie Marti bounding from one side of the court to the other, zipping passes to her weaponized snipers.

Mia Farris uncorked nuclear blasts from both fists.

Lyla Stuurmans tried to rip divots in the gym floor.

Madison McMillan mashed like a magnificent maniac.

And then they unleashed “The Red Dragon,” with Teagan Calkins spraying a career-high 19 winners to make the spines of the Darrington players run cold with fear.

The first set was a battle royale, just as expected, with the teams staying within a point of each other all the way until Coupeville found itself clinging to a 17-16 lead.

Enter McMillan, who strode to the service line, rolled the ball between her hands, looked up into the stands to make sure Grandpa Gordon was watching from above, and then delivered the goods.

A six-point run on her serve — punctuated by running mate Stuurmans thrashing the snot out of the ball on a winner which zipped over the heads of the Loggers, then plunged down and bit the back line — was the difference.

Darrington had no answer for McMillan’s artful work from the line, and the Wolves seized the moment.

Marti had two Logger-busting service runs in the second set, while McMillan added another one of her own, and Coupeville made short work of the middle frame.

Calkins and Farris took turns busting the defense (and the sound barrier) with window-rattling kills, while Jada Heaton kept things interesting by flicking a sweet winner that snuck over the net by the thinnest of margins.

Meanwhile Marti was on her horse, running down everything, ensuring no volleyball would escape on this night, no matter how far out of bounds it was headed when she caught up to it.

She and her teammates kept numerous plays alive, denying Darrington too many easy winners, then struck with a cold fury when given the chance to end a play themselves.

The Loggers, who entered the night ranked #3 among 1B teams by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, showed great potential and improvement from previous seasons.

But the Wolves, a senior-dominated team intent on making one final fantastic run, were too much for the visitors to overcome.

Darrington hung tough in the third set, but had no answer for plays such as the one where Stuurmans crashed to the floor to pluck a ball off the hardwood, which then set up another winner from the rampaging Calkins.

Farris let loose with a string of spikes to close things out, with the final point of the evening coming from Stuurmans, who laced a winner off the last fleck of paint on the backline.

As people celebrated around him, and Homecoming proposals rained down, CHS coach Cory Whitmore surveyed the scene with a smile.

“I’m really proud of the whole team,” he said. “We ran two different defenses, a different one for each of their big hitters, and everyone played their roles.

“Our first ball contact was really strong, and we looked confident against tough servers,” Whitmore added. “Just a strong night all around.”

Dakota Strong shredded Darrington’s defense Thursday night. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Dakota Strong was a force of nature unleashed.

Playing her most complete match Thursday, the Coupeville High School sophomore rained down hot death on visiting Darrington, sparking the Wolf JV spikers to a straight-sets win.

With Strong leading a team-wide embrace of big hits, CHS slipped past the Loggers 25-16, 25-21, 25-19 on a night when frequent Homecoming proposals captured a chunk of the spotlight.

The victory lifts the Coupeville JV to 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-1 overall, with a week before Orcas Island visits Cow Town Oct. 3 for the next match of the season.

Strong, who said yes to going to the big dance with boyfriend Landon Roberts, was electric all night long.

Adeline Maynes and Tenley Stuurmans set up their teammates with pinpoint passes, and seven different Wolves ripped a kill past Darrington’s defense.

None stood as tall as Strong, however, who mixed lightning bolts with artful tips, picking up winners at crucial moments.

Making mom Danette Beckley beam even more than normal, Danica’s “lil’ sis” kept the Wolf faithful on their feet with her stellar play, as did her teammates.

Darrington actually led in all three sets, only to have Coupeville come roaring from behind to seize the day in each frame.

With the first set knotted at 9-9, the Wolves got back-to-back tip winners from Strong and Chelsi Stevens to surge ahead, followed by a rat-a-tat attack of lasers.

Lexis Drake and Stuurmans joined Strong in shredding the psyche of their foes, with Stuurmans thumping a service ace right down the middle of the floor to end the first set.

Set #2 featured Capri Anter, Sydney Van Dyke, and Haylee Armstrong ripping off torrid runs at the service stripe, while Strong continued to toast the ball every time it came within range.

If the Loggers thought they might rally in the final frame, that idea quickly went out the window.

Doing the splits while airborne, Drake hammered a winner between two defenders, followed by a pair of superb slice shots from Stevens which dazzled the crowd.

Maynes provided the night’s final highlight reel, tearing off nine straight points on her serve to thoroughly deflate Darrington, while Anter nimbly dominated at the net in the waning moments.

Toss in appearances by Isa Mc Fetridge and Delilah Castellanos, and CHS coach Ashley Menges got strong work from everyone on the floor.

Thursday stats:

Capri Anter — 6 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces
Haylee Armstrong — 1 kill, 11 digs, 4 assists, 1 ace
Lexis Drake — 6 kills, 1 dig, 3 aces
Adeline Maynes — 1 kill, 3 digs, 13 assists, 6 aces
Chelsi Stevens — 4 kills, 1 dig
Dakota Strong — 8 kills, 1 solo block
Tenley Stuurmans — 6 kills, 3 digs, 8 assists, 1 ace

CMS spiker Emma Leavitt is ready to flex on some fools. (Leann Leavitt photo)

And so it begins.

The Coupeville Middle School volleyball teams kicked off their eight-game schedule with a road trip to South Whidbey Thursday, picking up valuable experience.

While the Wolves fell to the Falcons, they went down swinging, and showed great promise.

“The girls had great energy, and I think anyone in the gym could see that,” said CMS coach Cris Matochi.

“Our team chemistry started great, so I’m hoping that this amazing synergy will help us make the fixes that we need to make and get where we need to be.”

The young Wolves get a chance to work on things in front of their home fans, with their next three matches in their own gym.

Coupeville hosts Lakewood (Sept. 30), Sultan (Oct. 2), and King’s (Oct. 7) as part of a homestand.

How the season openers played out:

Team A:

Coupeville dropped the first two sets 25-14 and 25-17, before rebounding to take the finale 15-12.

“We are learning a new rotational system, so things were a little chaotic today,” Matochi said.

“However, I have faith that once the girls are comfortable with it, our game is going to flow so much better.”

Cami Van Dyke peppered South Whidbey with five service aces, while Zariyah Allen picked up three.

When the ball was in play, Coupeville’s biggest hitter was Rhylee Inman, who pounded a team-high three kills.

Rounding out the varsity roster in the opener were Cassie PowersKeeAyra BrownSage StavrosKennedy O’NeillJade PeabodyLaurel Crowder, and Emma Leavitt.

Team B:

South Whidbey claimed the first two sets 25-11 and 25-13, with Coupeville dominating the third set to a 15-6 tune.

“This team was able to improve every set and was able to win in the third set,” said Wolf coach Kristina Hooks.

“We had a lot of newcomers on the team, but they played well and had some great serves.”

Hooks was also pleased to see the growth of her veterans.

“We had a lot of great passing from some returning players, which I was happy to see their improvement since last season,” she said.

As the Wolves move forward, they plan to work on their skill sets, and the players themselves are contributing to the assessment process.

“Something they brought up after the game and even during the game was that the other team had a lot tougher serves than they were used to,” Hooks said.

“So, practicing serve receive with tougher serves is something that we will definitely be practicing more.”

Team C:

The Wolves put up a good fight but were swept in three sets.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done with the C team,” Hooks said.

“But I am impressed with how they played considering it was the first volleyball game for a lot of them.”

They’re movin’ on up. (David Somes photo)

They like us. Like, really kinda, sorta like us.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released its first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) rankings Wednesday, and Coupeville High School is among the top 10 in both volleyball and football.

The spikers, who are 4-0 heading into a Thursday home showdown with fellow undefeated Darrington, sit at #7 among 54 schools playing the sport in the 2B classification.

Meanwhile, the Wolf gridiron crew, which has posted a 2-1 record while playing three straight games against 1A schools, finds itself at #9 (out of 48 schools) in the 2B rankings.

Now, does RPI matter? Sort of.

Ask the WIAA and it will tell you RPI “will be one tool utilized by the seeding committees to determine first round bracket pairings into the state tournaments.”

So, there’s that.

It’s also a really good way to start arguments, such as when you look at the current rankings for 2B/1B boys’ soccer teams, where Coupeville is #16.

Mount Vernon Christian at 4-0-1, having outscored foes 12-3, would be a really good #1, but the Hurricanes are at #3.

Instead, Lopez Island, another Coupeville rival from the Northwest 2B/1B League, currently sits at #1 with a record of … 1-0.

Uh huh.

Guess it’s better than last year when the WIAA ranked a team #1 while failing to notice the team didn’t exist…
