Sometimes you improvise.

Langley never showed Wednesday, seemingly ending the afternoon early for Coupeville Middle School volleyball players bouncing off the gym walls in anticipation of their first match of the season.

“To those of you who left work early to come watch your daughters and granddaughters play, I’m sorry,” said CMS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

“I could pay you for the time you missed at work … but, nope, not doing that,” he said with a big grin, easing the mood in the room as he exited the gym.

But, even after finding out Coupeville’s next-door neighbors would be a no-show, there were still fans in the stands, and a ref waiting to conduct business.

So Wolf coaches Cris Matochi and Katie Kiel improvised, turning the day into a mix of a practice and a scrimmage — both a learning experience and a chance for many of the first-time players to work out jitters playing in front of people.

High school coaches Cory Whitmore and Ashley Menges were in the stands, scanning the talent, and while the photographer vanished pre-camera click, this writer stayed around.

The two-set scrimmage featured players from Level One and Level Two mixed together at a moment’s notice, in a bid to balance the competition.

Also, as play went on, both coaches got more involved in the action than in a normal match, often working on the court to teach valuable lessons and tweak player’s style of play.

Serving carried the day, with nine different Wolves winning points off their work at the line.

Jordaya Dowell had the hottest hand, rolling up 11 points on her serve, including eight straight points in the second set.

Also coming hot ‘n heavy with the approach shots were Teagan Calkins (6), Brynn Parker (5), Carly Burt (5), Grace Roberts (4), and Capri Anter (3).

Capri Anter impressed her coaches Wednesday, delivering her “best serves so far.”

Heidi Lysene (2), Haylee Armstrong (1), and Willow Leedy-Bonifas (1) rounded out the Wolves to score off their serves.

While sustaining rallies is a skill which a lot of the young Wolves are still learning, there were a couple of extended back-and-forth battles, and a lot of standout individual plays.

Sixth-grader Tenley Stuurmans — playing in front of proud big sis Lyla, a ferocious freshman currently terrorizing rival high school players with her wicked spikes — came out firing like a gunfighter headed to a high noon shootout.

If that gunfighter also took dance breaks during warmups.

Tenley Stuurmans popped a pretty drop shot for a winner, hit the floor while angling another ball over the net for a point, then teamed up with Calkins for the day’s best precision play.

On that one, Calkins went low to field a sharply-hit serve by Ava Carpenter, flicked the ball skyward, then bounced to her feet as Stuurmans lofted a precision set.

Completing the fairly-flawless one-two-three series, Calkins split the defense with a surgical strike of a kill, setting off a celebration by her teammates.

Seventh-grader Grace Roberts, playing in the same gym older sister Ally once ruled as a spike-happy volleyball basher, complemented her strong serves with two plays on which she hit winners while on the move.

Also coming up big with hits for points were Myra McDonald and Adeline Maynes.

Abbigail Bond, Rhylin Price, Inara Maund, Natalie Perera, Ava Ashby, Alexis Hewitt, and Isabella de Souza Oliveira round out the Wolf roster, and their coaches came away pleased with how their players handled things.

“Turned out to be a good day after all!,” Kiel said.

A great team playing for a great cause.

When the Coupeville High School volleyball squads return to action Tuesday, Oct. 5, the Wolves will be playing for more than just themselves.

Coupeville’s opponent will be Concrete, with JV set to tip at 5:00 PM, varsity at 6:30.

But the home games are also tagged as Dig Pink Night, with the Wolves and Lions raising funds to fight breast cancer.

All proceeds go to pay for mammography’s through WhidbeyHealth.

If you’re there in person, you’ll be able to participate in a raffle and win prizes.

But, if you can’t make it and want to still help, donations can be made by popping over here, and choosing “Mammography-Dig Pink” as the Fund Designation:

Right back in stride.

Less than 24 hours after stumbling against South Whidbey in a non-conference tilt, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team returned to its winning ways.

Getting big contributions from multiple players, the Wolves bounced host Friday Harbor 25-16, 25-12, 18-25, 25-18 to get to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Coupeville, which is 5-2 overall, sits alone atop the NWL standings, though that should change quickly.

Two-time defending state champ La Conner returned from a Covid-related shutdown Monday, and has raised its record to 3-0 in league, 4-0 overall.

The Braves are scheduled to play three more matches before hosting Coupeville Oct. 6.

The Wolves have six days off now, then welcome Concrete, a team it has already beat, to Whidbey Oct. 5.

Barring any colossal upsets, that means La Conner and Coupeville should both be 6-0 in NWL play heading into the first of their two match-ups this season.

But all of that was on the back burner Tuesday, as Coupeville was focused on finding a quick fix for its struggles against South Whidbey.

Mission accomplished.

“Good to get back on the court and bring home a win,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore. “We made some adjustments that seemed to do well for us.”

Getting her most substantial playing time of the season, hard-working junior Ryanne Knoblich shone brightly, collecting her first seven kills of the campaign, along with a season-high 13 digs.

And she wasn’t the only Wolf to step up, as Lucy Tenore notched her first solo block of the season, Lyla Stuurmans unleashed her first ace, and Madison McMillan made her varsity debut.

The fourth freshman to play this year for Coupeville’s top team, she joins fellow 9th graders Stuurmans, Savina Wells, and Katie Marti in making an immediate impact.

Freshman Madison McMillan made her varsity debut, collecting her first kill.

Ryanne stepped up and did really well for us playing six rotations,” Whitmore said.

Madison, earning a varsity jersey, also collected her first varsity kill,” he added. “We are very proud of her progress, and readiness to be thrown in.”

Tuesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 15 digs, 2 aces
Maddie Georges — 2 kills, 4 digs, 23 assists, 6 aces
Taygin Jump — 9 digs
Ryanne Knoblich — 7 kills, 13 digs, 1 ace
Madison McMillan
— 1 kill
Grey Peabody — 2 kills
Jill Prince — 9 kills
Olivia Schaffeld
— 4 kills, 1 dig
Lyla Stuurmans
— 6 kills, 3 digs, 1 ace
Lucy Tenore
— 8 kills, 2 aces, 1 solo block
Savina Wells
— 3 digs, 4 aces

The Wolves have plenty to celebrate as they sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League standings.

Katie Marti and Coupeville’s JV volleyball team are a perfect 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

You can cut their floor time, but you can’t stop them crushing you.

With the last ferry off of Friday Harbor sounding its whistle Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team didn’t get to play a full match.

But that didn’t matter, as the Wolves crushed their hosts quickly and efficiently during the time they had, strolling to a 25-8, 20-7 win.

The victory, the JV’s second in less than 24 hours, lifts them to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-1 overall.

Coupeville took command at the service line and never let up, peppering the host Wolverines from every angle.

“It was good!,” said CHS coach Ashley Menges. “It was a night full of serving for the girls; stats will show that for sure.”

Six of the nine Wolves notched at least one ace, with Madison McMillan, Issabel Johnson, and Gwen Gustafson recording five apiece to pace the team.

Issabel Johnson cranks up the ace machine.

After a crush of games in a short stretch of days, Coupeville is off until next Tuesday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Concrete.

With her team back in practice mode over the next six days, Menges will continue to preach improvement and fine-tuning of skills.

“As we’re getting to the end of our first round playing the league, we’re gonna start challenging the girls to hold a standard,” she said.

“I’m wanting these girls to continue to have great games as they continue to progress in their skills.

“I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve already made, but I’m even more excited for what’s to come.”

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 assist, 3 aces
Mia Farris — 3 aces
Gwen Gustafson — 3 kills, 5 aces
Jada Heaton — 1 kill
Issabel Johnson — 5 aces
Katie Marti — 2 assists, 4 aces
Madison McMillan — 1 kill, 1 dig, 6 aces
Grey Peabody — 1 solo block
Aby Wood  — 1 kill
