CHS grad shoots, scores on golf course

The Wolf is hunting eagles.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo is pulling double duty at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, playing for the school’s baseball and golf squads.

His best performance as a college duffer came Thursday, when he topped the Owls scoring chart at the Mariner Invitational at Augusta, Maine.

Lippo carded an 88 on the 6,214-yard course, his best round at UMPI.

The Owls placed fifth in the team standings, with Thomas College holding off the field to claim the crown.

Lippo and Co. play twice this weekend, facing off with Husson University Saturday, before joining the SMCC Invitational Sunday.

The season wraps with the North Atlantic Conference Championships Oct. 8-9 in Waterville.

CHS grad chases college football dream

He’s traveled across the country in pursuit of his athletic dreams.

Coupeville High School grad Ben Smith is currently suiting up for the Eureka College football team in Illinois.

The NCAA D-III school is best known for a former football player named Ronald Reagan, who graduated in 1932 before going on to be a movie star, the Governor of California, and the 40th President of the United States.

The current Red Devils gridiron squad is 1-0 in conference play and 1-2 overall after whacking visiting Rockford 31-14 Saturday.

Smith, who was a First-Team All-Conference running back during his time at Coupeville, is listed at linebacker.

A college sophomore, he’s played on special teams in all three of his games, wearing #36 while chasing after kick returners.

Smith, whose older brother Jacob was a top track and field star at CHS, is studying criminal justice at Eureka when not playing football.

“I am the danger!”

Cue “Renegade.” Sean Toomey-Stout has arrived.

The Torpedo is blowing things up.

Coupeville grad Sean Toomey-Stout is the first former Wolf to ever record stats for the University of Washington football program.

As in, a program which launched in 1889, has won two national titles, and will play its 1,250th game this Saturday.

How did Toomey-Stout go from outrunning deer on the field in Cow Town to recording four tackles in his first two college games, which ranks him 10th on the current Huskies stat sheet?

No, you clearly don’t know who you’re talking to, so let me clue you in.

Toomey-Stout achieves his gridiron dream

The Torpedo is a made man.

Coupeville High School graduate Sean Toomey-Stout saw his first on-field action as an NCAA D-I football player Saturday, as the University of Washington thumped visiting Kent State 45-20.

The former Wolf, a redshirt freshman for the Huskies, was in on the game’s final three tackles, bringing down Golden Flash runner Gavin Garcia each time.

Toomey-Stout recorded solo tackles after a pair of four-yard gains, while teaming up with fellow Dawg Makell Esteen to stuff Garcia on a three-yard plunge.

Garcia was a four-time state champion in high school, running for more than 2,000 yards as a senior while finishing his career with the second-most touchdowns in Pennsylvania history.

Maya Toomey-Stout’s twin brother joined the U-Dub football program as a walk-on after finishing a stellar prep career in Coupeville.

Sean was a two-time CHS Male Athlete of the year who starred for the Wolves on the football field (alongside older brother Cameron), basketball court, and track oval.

While he didn’t see on-field action for the Huskies last year, Beth Stout and Lisa Toomey’s son suited up for games and made the Pac-12 academic honor roll.

Toomey-Stout and the Dawgs return to action next Saturday, Sept. 10, when Washington hosts Portland State.

Mica Mania captures the nation

Another year in the spotlight.

Coupeville grad Mica Shipley was back front and center Saturday, kicking off her third season as an NCAA D-I cheerleader.

She and her teammates brought the noise and the pride in Cheney, as Eastern Washington University football rallied to beat visiting Tennessee State 36-29 in the season opener.

The game included a 55-minute lightning delay.

The Eagles, who are looking for a 16th straight winning season, have a jam-packed schedule of big-time games on the horizon.

Two in particular stand out.

EWU travels to Eugene to face the University of Oregon Sept. 10 and plays the University of Florida in Gainesville Oct. 1.

Shipley, the most electrifying woman in sports entertainment, is a junior at EWU.

During her time in Coupeville, she was a cheer captain and helped lead the Wolves back to being a competition squad after a seven-year gap.

Shipley and Co. earned third place at the state meet during her junior season, before competing at nationals the next year.

The cheer supernova also modeled for Glitter Starz, a national leader in custom all-star uniforms, warm-ups, and other cheer essentials.
