Spend a few clams, buy a sweet tale

Go back in time for Christmas.

Clam the Wham and Min the Pin, a delightful-looking book written and drawn by Coupeville author Beatrice Powell in 1983, is now available to buy in person or online for the first time.

The artwork which is the basis for the book was found by her daughter, CHS grad Sarah (Powell) Lyngra, when she was cleaning out boxes.

The Min from the title is Sarah’s younger sister, who, like everyone in the family, is a former Wolf athlete.

Brother Caleb rounds out Beatrice’s pack o’ kids, all now adults.

The book is available to buy at The Kingfisher Bookstore on Front Street in Coupeville.

Purchasing it there allows you to gaze out at the tidelands and see where Beatrice Powell set her tale.

The house shown in the book is the historic “The House on Penn Cove,” now an Airbnb.

“The book is a delight full of whimsy and would make a great Christmas present for readers of all ages,” Lyngra said.

“Mom’s art is lovely, and I’m delighted to share it with the world. I think she would be thrilled that it has been officially published.”

Winner, winner, Falcon dinner!

The spell is broken.

Playing at home for the final time this season Monday, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams went out with a bang.

Sweeping three wins from visiting South Whidbey, the Wolves fired the first shots in a two-day hoops extravaganza with their neighbors, while claiming their first victories of the season.

Now, during a frantic final week of hardwood action, the two schools will square off again Tuesday, this time in Langley.

That’s a makeup for earlier games postponed by a lack of refs.

After that comes the season finale against Lakewood, also on the road, and then the CMS boys hang up their jerseys for the season.

How Monday played out, on a day when I was babysitting and not in the CMS gym:

 

Level 1:

Wolf big man Nick Laska matched South Whidbey by himself as Coupeville drilled the Falcons 36-20.

The 8th grader, who leads all CMS players in scoring this season, scored in every quarter, racking up four, six, six, and four points on his way to a season high.

Chayse Van Velkinburgh tossed in 11, including hitting on a trio of three-balls, while Calvin Kappes (3) and Khanor Jump (2) rounded out the torrid offensive attack.

Kamden Ratcliff, Carson Grove, Nathan Niewald, and Jackson Sollars also saw floor time for the Wolves in the win.

 

Level 2:

Spreading out the offensive love between six players, Coupeville pulled out a 21-15 win.

Roger Merino-Martinez rippled the nets for a team-best six points, with Treyshawn Stewart adding five, including a three-ball.

Jump knocked down four, while Lincoln Wagner, Jayden Little, and River Simpson chipped in with a bucket apiece.

Xander Beaman, Diesel Eck, and Jonah Weyl rounded out the rotation for CMS coach RayLynn Ratcliff.

 

Level 3:

The biggest rout of the night came in the finale, as Coupeville romped to a 34-10 victory.

Wagner and Deacon Frost paced the Wolves, each tickling the twines for eight, with Johnathan Jacobsen backing them up with six.

Simpson (4), Aiden Wheat (2), Beaman (2), Jacob Lujan (2), and William Tierney (2) also scored, with Mario Martinez bringing the heat on defense.

It was the first points this season for Wheat, Frost, and Tierney, giving Coupeville 23 players who have scored through the first six games.

Wolf grappler a star on the mats

The Lone Wolf is howling.

Coupeville High School senior Jaje Drake, a one-man Cow Town wrestling crew training and traveling with South Whidbey, is off to a strong start.

He split a pair of matches against Oak Harbor Thursday, Dec. 7, then went a crisp 10-0 Saturday, Dec. 9 during a tournament held at Chimacum High School.

Drake returns to the mat this Wednesday when South Whidbey plays host to Friday Harbor and Concrete.

A captain during the football season, he is following in the footsteps of former Wolf Alex Turner, who has followed up his time on the mat by working as a football coach at CHS.

Since Coupeville is one of the few schools in Washington state not to have its own grappling program, Drake had to find another school to join up with as a part of a co-op.

He will remain with South Whidbey, but rep Coupeville, during the regular season, then go his own way once the postseason arrives.

That’s because the Falcons are a 1A program, while CHS is a 2B school.

Drake goes to work.

Buckets to score, points to count

There’s 496 points in the book, and many more to come.

High school basketball is just getting revved up, and the week ahead is a busy one for Coupeville’s four hardwood teams, who each have three games on the schedule.

That will give the Wolves plenty of opportunities to fill up the bucket as individual scoring races start to shape up.

Monday is just a practice day, with games set for Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday — so, an ideal time to scan those stats.

Cousins burn nets in narrow loss

Pretend the second quarter didn’t happen.

In that scenario, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team would have left Sultan Saturday night with a win.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, the scorebook keepers insist on following the rules, and that leaves Cow Town’s hardcourt warriors on the short end of a 38-31 score.

The non-conference road loss drops CHS to 1-1 on the season, with a busy week ahead.

The young Wolves, who played three 8th graders Saturday, vie at home twice in the next six days, while hopping on the bus once.

Wednesday night they host Orcas Island, then it’s off to Friday Harbor on Friday, before a return visit to the CHS gym Saturday to square off against South Whidbey.

That night the Wolf JV will be part of the 50th anniversary of their school’s girls’ hoops program.

Saturday in Sultan, Kassie O’Neil’s squad came out sharp, jumping to an 8-3 lead at the first break.

Freshman Haylee Armstrong had the hot hand, banking in four of her game-high 15 points in the first frame, while Lexis Drake and Bryley Gilbert added buckets.

Kassie O’Neil’s hardcourt warriors play at home twice this coming week.

The second quarter didn’t go quite as well, however, as the host Turks used a 17-6 surge to snatch the lead back.

Down 20-14 at the break, the Wolves kept things close in the second half.

Capri Anter scored all five of her team’s points in the third, as CHS hung tough in a 6-5 defense-first frame, before the teams put together a 12-12 donnybrook in the finale.

Cousins accounted for 22 of Coupeville’s 31 points, with Anter popping for seven to back Armstrong’s 15.

8th grader Tenley Stuurmans rippled the nets for five, while Drake (2) and Gilbert (2) rounded out the scoring attack.

Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, Ari Cunningham, and Chelsi Stevens also saw floor time, with the latter two in that group being 8th graders who are playing up this winter.
