A final spike, a fond farewell

She finished in the spotlight.

Coupeville High School senior Grey Peabody brought her prep volleyball career to a close Sunday, playing in the All-State match in Burlington-Edison.

Wolf coach Cory Whitmore and her high school teammates were on hand to watch the middle blocker in action.

Repping #8 for the final time, Peabody closed a stellar four-year career which saw her earn All-Conference honors and help guide her team to state as a senior.

Every point counts, even the missing ones.

We’re one week into a new season of Coupeville High School basketball, so it’s time for our first look at individual scoring stats for the Wolves.

The varsity boys have the most games in the books, while the JV girls are haunted by a missing 16 minutes of stats.

Stone soars, Queens quieted

Things took a turn for the worse.

A day after romping to a big win, Makana Stone and her Norwegian professional women’s basketball squad fell in a match-up with the league’s best team.

Despite getting a double-double from their Coupeville grad, Ammerud wasn’t able to keep up with Ulriken, falling 88-60

The loss gives Stone and Co. a weekend split and leaves them sitting at 3-5 in the Kvinneligaen.

The former Wolf ace finished with 21 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, three assists, and four steals, while teammates Julia Heiden and Josephine Traberg added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Ulriken gunner Stine Austgulen led all scorers with 32.

Sunday’s match-up was a close one for a quarter, with the top squad in the six-team Kvinneligaen holding on to a 24-22 lead at the first break.

Ulriken, now 6-1 on the season, busted the game open in the second frame, romping to a 23-9 advantage as it carried a 47-31 lead into the locker room.

From there Ammerud’s deficit ballooned out to 69-47 after three quarters of play.

The Queens get a chance at revenge next weekend, when they get a rematch with Ulriken on Sunday, Dec. 10.

Stone, in her third season of overseas pro ball, has racked up 178 points, 94 rebounds, 30 assists, 29 steals, and six blocks through the first eight games.

Peabody notches All-State honors

The run of excellence continues.

A season after Maddie Georges and Alita Blouin played in the volleyball All-State match, Coupeville is sending another senior to the event.

This time around it’s middle blocker Grey Peabody, who caps a four-year run with the Wolves.

The power-hitting spike machine will join other top athletes at Burlington-Edison High School Sunday for the celebration.

Peabody was a First-Team All-Conference player this season, leading the Wolves to a 12-7 record and their first trip to the state tourney since 2017.

She finished the season with 172 kills, 14 digs, 17 solo blocks, 21 block assists, two assists, and one service ace, leading Coupeville in solo blocks and block assists.

One week in, plenty left to play

It was a busy first week.

Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams played 27 games across the first seven days of the new season, with 14 of those in just the past two days.

None of the opening bouts were conference rumbles, however, so everyone is still tied for first place in the league standings.

Sort of.

After that initial flurry, in which Coupeville High School varsity hoops teams combined to play five times, things slow down this coming week for the Wolves.

Neither the boys nor the girls take the floor against a foe until Saturday, Dec. 9, when CHS listens to the song of the bus wheels during a trek to the wilds of Sultan.

Between now and then, plenty of time to tweak things in practice, rest any early-season injuries, and gaze upon the standings.
