Wolf JV coach/master motivator Chris Smith (red top) tells his team, “No McDonald’s unless you win.”

The school year is over, but the slide shows continue to pop up.

Following on the footsteps of the very popular track season spectacular, CHS baseball moms have put together their own clip show to honor the 2016 Wolf diamond squad.

Set to the music of John Fogerty and Trace Adkins, it documents Coupeville’s rise to the top of the 1A Olympic League, in a concise five-minute burst of images.

Consistency.

Coupeville High School upheld tradition, netting four First-Team All-League players for the second consecutive year when 1A Olympic League softball coaches tallied their votes.

Sophomores Katrina McGranahan (P) and Lauren Rose (3B) repeated, while sophomore Hope Lodell (OF) and freshman Veronica Crownover (Designated Player) were first-time honorees.

Coupeville went 9-11, winning five straight early in the year.

The Wolves battled aggressively against Bellevue Christian in a playoff loss, then watched as the Vikings, who they split regular season games with, went on to claim 3rd place at the state playoffs.

The All-League honors were among a mix of awards handed out by coaches Kevin McGranahan and Ron Wright at a season-ending banquet Monday afternoon.

Katrina McGranahan nabbed MVP honors, while Rose (Offensive MVP), Sarah Wright (Defensive MVP), Tiffany Briscoe (Hustle Award) and Kailey Kellner (Coaches Award) were also honored.

Cole Payne is going out on top.

The Coupeville High School senior, who fought through injury to lead the Wolves to their first baseball league title in 25 years this spring, was tabbed as the MVP of the 1A Olympic League in coach’s voting.

Payne is the second CHS athlete to win top honors in the league, following in the footsteps of two-time girls’ basketball MVP Makana Stone.

A force both at the plate as a hitter and behind it as a catcher, Payne topped a 13-man All-League team released Monday afternoon.

Joining him as First-Team All-League players were senior pitcher CJ Smith, sophomore pitcher Hunter Smith and freshman third baseman Matt Hilborn.

The team features seven seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and one freshman.

Coupeville also received the award for best coaching staff, while Port Townsend took home the sportsmanship award.

Olympic League singles champ Valen Trujillo poses with Wolf coach Ken Stange.

Top of the world, ma! Valen Trujillo sailed through three matches Tuesday en route to a singles title.

If there was any doubt the 1A Olympic League tennis scene belonged to Coupeville, scratch that.

On the heels of their second straight unbeaten stroll to a league title, the Wolf netters dominated play Tuesday in Chimacum at the league’s postseason tourney.

Junior Valen Trujillo swept to a singles title, while sophomores Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger matched her with a title in doubles play.

Three seniors — doubles duo Jazmine Franklin and McKenzie Bailey and singles player Sydney Autio — finished fourth at the league tourney and also advance to districts.

That will be Thursday, May 19 in Spanaway.

After winning her opening match Tuesday, Autio was leading late in her semifinal and on her way to facing off with Trujillo, when she suffered an injury.

She gutted it out and remained on the court to finish a three-set duel, then defaulted her next match and went home to heal.

“I bet she’ll be OK next week,” said a confident CHS coach Ken Stange.

Some Wolves saved their best for last.

Competing Monday in Silverdale at the Olympic League JV Championships, four Coupeville High School track stars set a pair of personal bests.

Emma Smith, Ashlie Shank, Dominic Dausey and Ariah Bepler recorded two PRs apiece, part of a team-wide run of 10 on the day, at an event known as the “last chance qualifier.”

With all 11 Olympic League teams (seven 2A and four 1A schools) in attendance, athletes had a final chance to nail a time or throw which would qualify them for next weekend’s sub-district meet at Bremerton.

To gain entry to that event you have to be in the top eight for your event among all 1A athletes in the league.

From there, athletes have the chance to advance on to districts and state.

While Monday’s meet was mostly about individual achievement, team scores were kept, with Klahowya taking the boys title and the Eagles tying with Port Townsend for the girls title.

Coupeville, which had one of the smallest rosters in attendance, still did well, claiming fifth of 11 teams in the boys battle and 7th for the girls.

The Wolves were led by three second-place finishes, with Alexxis Otto (shot put), Jakobi Baumann (3200) and Bepler (long jump) besting most of the field.
