Get in, get out, make it as painless as possible.

Picking apart a winless Friday Harbor team which couldn’t generate much offense, or make much of a defensive stand, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad rolled to a straight-sets win Tuesday night.

It wasn’t spectacular, but it didn’t need to be.

It was precision work, it came out in favor of the Wolves to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-5 tune, and it handed CHS its first home victory of the season.

Now 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-4 overall, Coupeville is better than its record might sound.

Three of those losses came in agonizing five-set battle royales, while another one was to undefeated 1B powerhouse Neah Bay.

Squaring off with a Friday Harbor team which slipped to 0-8 on the season, the Wolves controlled every aspect of the match.

“We played clean, we scrambled really well in pursuit of the ball, and we played in our system tonight,” said coach Cory Whitmore as he pondered the sweet idea of an early dinner for once.

Katie Marti got things jumpin’, reeling off four straight points on her serve to begin the night, and it was mostly all gravy and good times from there.

The rallies were short, and generally ended in one way — with a Wolf mashing the life force out of the volleyball.

Whether it was Mia Farris and Lyla Stuurmans flying in from the side to tattoo winners, or young gun Teagan Calkins bounding skyward to crush a spike, the visitors had few answers.

In the middle of things, serene senior Grey Peabody was a tower of power, patrolling the net and refusing entrance to any wayward shots trying to sneak over the barrier.

The second and third sets were more of the same, plastering a smile on the faces of most Wolf fans as they watched their spikers cruise to a lopsided win.

The Wolves peppered Friday Harbor with 21 official service aces, with Calkins collecting eight of those as mom Jackie Saia nodded along in approval of her daughter’s artistry.

With the win in hand, Coupeville turns its attention to Saturday, when Forks (6-2) arrives in town for a non-conference scrap.

That’s the second match in a run of five-straight home tilts for the Wolves, including the annual cancer awareness night next week.

The event, which raises money for the WhidbeyHealth breast cancer foundation includes a raffle.

Wolf Moms have collected 15 items, including “some really great baskets and gift cards.”

Tickets will be $5 apiece or $20 for five.

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 dig
Teagan Calkins — 3 kills, 3 digs, 8 aces, 1 block assist
Mia Farris — 6 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces
Jada Heaton — 1 kill, 1 block assist
Issabel Johnson — 1 dig, 1 ace
Katie Marti — 1 kill, 1 dig, 16 assists, 3 aces

You can cut their floor time, but you can’t stop them crushing you.

With the last ferry off of Friday Harbor sounding its whistle Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team didn’t get to play a full match.

But that didn’t matter, as the Wolves crushed their hosts quickly and efficiently during the time they had, strolling to a 25-8, 20-7 win.

The victory, the JV’s second in less than 24 hours, lifts them to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-1 overall.

Coupeville took command at the service line and never let up, peppering the host Wolverines from every angle.

“It was good!,” said CHS coach Ashley Menges. “It was a night full of serving for the girls; stats will show that for sure.”

Six of the nine Wolves notched at least one ace, with Madison McMillan, Issabel Johnson, and Gwen Gustafson recording five apiece to pace the team.

Issabel Johnson cranks up the ace machine.

After a crush of games in a short stretch of days, Coupeville is off until next Tuesday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Concrete.

With her team back in practice mode over the next six days, Menges will continue to preach improvement and fine-tuning of skills.

“As we’re getting to the end of our first round playing the league, we’re gonna start challenging the girls to hold a standard,” she said.

“I’m wanting these girls to continue to have great games as they continue to progress in their skills.

“I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve already made, but I’m even more excited for what’s to come.”

Despite being the middle of Oct., Monday’s Coupeville High School boys tennis match had perfect weather.

In a season where fall rain has played less of a role than normal, the Wolves and visiting Seattle Academy enjoyed pristine conditions.

That also made life easier for wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken, who swung by the CHS courts to see what was goin’ down.

They’re peaking at the right time.

Finishing the regular season with three home matches in one week, the last one which will go down Thursday, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads are going out in style.

Wednesday, both the 7th and 8th grade Wolves romped to wins against Blue Heron, each taking two of three sets from the visitors.

Coupeville will try to keep that momentum going when it hosts Sequim in its finale Thursday. First tip is 3:15 PM.

Facing off with Blue Heron, which hails from Port Townsend, the Wolf 7th graders cruised to the win thanks to strong serving.

They hit on 35 of 44 serves across the first two sets.

Brynn Schmidt kick-started things, nailing 10 serves in a row to start the first set, before Kaielle Bepler (seven serves) and Alita Blouin (6) carried the burden in the next set.

Since Blue Heron fields only one team for each grade, Coupeville mashed together its varsity and JV teams on the afternoon.

“Everyone played, so it was great to get the whole team on the court, even though it was only three games,” said CMS 7th grade co-coach Kimberly Bepler.

“We’ll be glad to play the full three games for JV and the full three games for varsity tomorrow (Thursday),” she added. “The girls are looking forward to playing our last match after a really fun season of learning and acquiring new skills.”

Two. That's how many aces Hope Lodell needs to be the first Wolf to hit 100 in a season. (John Fisken photo)

Two. That’s how many aces Hope Lodell needs to be the first Wolf to hit 100 in a season. (John Fisken photo)

Hope Lodell is pretty much the best server playing high school volleyball in Washington state.

At least among players whose coaches have submitted stats to MaxPreps.

As Coupeville (11-4 overall) prepares to host the district tourney this Saturday, a look at the regular season numbers finds the Wolves popping up 13 times among the best 1A has to offer.

From Valen Trujillo (#5 in digs) to Emma Smith (#17 in blocks), CHS players can stand with the best in their division.

But one Wolf is taking her name to a higher level, and that’s Lodell.

The junior has ripped off 98 service aces this season — a school single-season record — which puts her #1 in 1A and #3 across all divisions (2B-4A).

But, she trails Mollie Olson of Napavine and Samantha Johnson of Northwest Christian by just a piddly two aces, despite having way less opportunities at the line than either of her fellow snipers.

Olson has fired off 366 serves, Johnson 320 and Lodell just a relatively modest 260.

And yet she trails by just TWO aces.

That’s largely because Lodell is cranking out an ace on 37.7% of her serves, the best figure compiled by anyone in the top 50.
