Booters honored by league coaches

Coming off a season where it was in playoff contention until the final game, the Coupeville High School co-ed soccer squad landed four players on the All-League team.

Senior Cael Wilson, who led the Wolves in scoring with seven goals, was tabbed as a First-Team pick by Northwest 2B/1B League boys’ coaches.

He was joined in receiving honors by three other Class of 2025 members, with Preston Epp and Hurlee Bronec named as Second-Team picks and Ayden Wyman claiming Honorable Mention status.

Wyman notched 13 goals across her first two seasons of high school soccer while leading the Wolf girls’ program, before joining the CHS boys for her junior and senior years after Coupeville was unable to field a girls’ squad.

She was one of two female players to notch All-League honors, joining Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood sophomore Lydia Negash.

Lopez Island, which had a breakout season while finishing 2nd at the 1B/2B state tourney, swept the league’s top honors.

Junior Andris Meissner was tabbed as MVP, with Mycah Kraushaar honored as Coach of the Year and her team also receiving the sportsmanship award.

Orcas Island, which won its second state title, had the most players picked, with seven of its booters receiving First or Second-Team honors.

Coupeville went 4-4 in conference play while vying in a league which produced three of the top four teams in the state, and 6-8-1 overall.

That included a landmark home win over Mount Vernon Christian, its first in 13 games against the perennial power.

Gridiron giants earn All-League honors

One final honor for a pack of Wolves.

With three Coupeville High School players selected on both sides of the ball, seven players from the 2024 gridiron squad landed All-League status when coaches voted.

Among the seven schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League, Orcas Island and Mount Vernon Christian don’t play football, while La Conner, Concrete, and Darrington are currently competing as eight-man teams.

That leaves Coupeville and Friday Harbor as the only 11-man units.

From that talent pool, Wolf quarterback Chase Anderson, who scored a team-high 99 points, was tabbed as the league’s Offensive MVP.

Joining him as First-Team picks on the offensive side of the ball were receiver Jack Porter, tight end Hunter Bronec, and linemen Marcelo Gebhard and Riley Lawless.

Wolf running back Johnny Porter was tabbed for honorable mention status.

Wolf seniors Marcelo Gebhard (54), Hunter Bronec (34), and Jack Porter earned recognition for stellar seasons.

On defense, Anderson (defensive back), Jack Porter (lineman), and linebackers Gebhard, Marquette Cunningham, and Johnny Porter were First-Team picks.

Lawless is a sophomore, Anderson and Cunningham are juniors, while Gebhard, Bronec, and the Porter twins are seniors.

Coupeville, which finished 5-4 overall, 1-1 in league play, also earned the team sportsmanship award.

Wolf spikers dominate All-League honors

“The Franchise” is the MVP.

Coupeville High School senior Lyla Stuurmans has been hailed by Northwest 2B/1B League volleyball coaches as the top spiker in the conference after a memorable final run.

Stuurmans, who helped the Wolves reel off 18 straight wins, claim league and bi-district titles, and place 4th at state, was a stat-producing machine.

She paced CHS in kills (200), solo blocks (22), and block assists (19), while also collecting 113 digs, 30 service aces, and 16 assists.

Joining her as First-Team All-Conference picks were fellow seniors Mia Farris and Katie Marti, while junior Teagan Calkins was named a Second-Team honoree.

“Mia the Magnificent” put together a strong performance across the board, delivering 174 kills and 179 digs to go with 38 aces, five assists, three block assists, and one solo block.

Meanwhile, Marti sparked the offense from the setter position, leading the Wolves with 577 assists and 58 aces. She also picked up 120 digs, 30 kills, and six block assists.

Calkins smacked 194 kills, went low for 64 digs, and rifled 33 aces. She also had 15 block assists.

Senior Madison McMillan was tabbed for Honorable Mention status, while Wolf head man Cory Whitmore was the NWL Coach of the Year.

McMillan filled up the stat sheet with 77 kills, a team-best 194 digs, four block assists, 22 assists, and 46 aces.

Concrete received the Team Sportsmanship award.

As he surveyed the results of All-League voting, Coupeville’s coach was a happy man.

“I’m so proud of the girls,” Whitmore said.

“Not only are they incredible athletes, but they’re also wonderful young adults and have been an absolute pleasure and honor to coach and spend time with.

“No surprise they got noticed by the other coaches.”

Wolves dominate softball All-League honors

Bow Down to Cow Town, indeed.

After rampaging through league play on its way to a 9-0 mark this spring, the Coupeville High School softball squad got plenty of love from rival coaches.

Sophomore catcher Teagan Calkins, the two-way terror known as “The Red Dragon,” was tabbed as co-MVP of the Northwest 2B/1B League, while diamond guru Kevin McGranahan was named Coach of the Year.

Calkins was fond of cranking home runs, both of the over-the-fence and inside-the-park variety, while playing superb defense while working with a super-young pitching staff which featured two freshmen and an 8th grader.

Eight other Wolves were honored as well, with five making the First Team in coach voting.

Those players were juniors Madison McMillan, Taylor Brotemarkle, Mia Farris, and Jada Heaton, as well as fab frosh Haylee Armstrong.

Her fellow freshman (and cousin), Capri Anter, was joined by 8th graders Adeline Maynes and Sydney Van Dyke as Second-Team All-League selections.

Coupeville went 14-5 overall, reclaimed its conference crown, came within a play or two of advancing to state, and can return every player on the roster next spring.

East or West, always the best

Grace Roberts

It’s a family tradition.

Grace Roberts, who grew up in Coupeville and is now a freshman at Chelan High School, was recently named a First-Team All-League pick in softball by 1A Caribou Trail League coaches.

She was one of just two freshmen to notch the honor.

Grace, a first baseman/pitcher, joins her cousin, Landon Roberts, who was a First Team pick in baseball in the Northwest 2B/1B League while repping Coupeville’s red and black.

Her older sister, Madeline, was also an All-League player on the softball diamond, honored for her work at shortstop for Coupeville back in 2014, when the Wolves played in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

Chelan, which has a very young team — nine of 13 players were 8th or 9th graders this spring — finished 13-5, splitting a pair of games at the district tourney.
