Diamond queens rake in awards

They dominated on the field and off.

Putting together a 20-3 season, the Coupeville High School softball squad went four games deep at the 2B state tourney — the second-best performance in program history.

Thursday, Aaron Lucero and his coaching staff hailed their players for all their hard work throughout the spring, handing out letters and awards at a team banquet.

Topping things was the announcement that seven players received All-League honors when Northwest 2B/1B League coaches voted.

Seniors Mia Farris and Madison McMillan, junior Teagan Calkins, and freshman hurler Adeline Maynes were First-Team picks, with seniors Taylor Brotemarkle and Jada Heaton and sophomore Haylee Armstrong tabbed as Second-Team selections.

In team awards, Calkins, Coupeville’s ace catcher, was selected as the Most Outstanding Player.

McMillan was the Offensive MVP, Maynes the Defensive MVP, while Armstrong won the Dirt Bag Award and Farris earned the Heart Award.

Calkins, Farris, and McMillan were honored for their work as team captains, while Heaton, Brotemarkle, Chloe Marzocca, McMillan, and Farris received Four-Year Awards.

Hardball trio earn All-League honors

They represented.

Coupeville High School landed three All-Conference honorees when Northwest 2B/1B League baseball coaches tabbed the best players of the spring.

Wolf senior Landon Roberts and junior Camden Glover were picked as First-Team All-League selections, with junior Coop Cooper earning Second-Team status.

The veteran trio were leaders on a very-young CHS hardball squad which went 6-13 overall, 5-7 in league play.

All three pitched for the Wolves, while also manning other positions when they weren’t on the mound.

Roberts and Glover both did stints at catcher for a program which only had 11 players this season, as well as playing in the infield.

When Cooper wasn’t chucking strikes, he was also an active infielder, with all three standing tall at the plate, providing an offensive spark for Steve Hilborn’s squad.

Glover led CHS with a .380 batting average, 18 RBI, and six doubles, while Roberts hit .356 with a team-high 21 base hits.

On the mound, Glover (66), Cooper (61), and Roberts (54) paced the Wolves in strikeouts, with Cooper leading the team in starts.

Camden Glover (17) and Coop Cooper helped anchor a CHS baseball team which was short on players this season.

Hoops coaches hail Wolves

They made a positive impression on rival coaches.

Four Coupeville High School basketball players were honored Tuesday when Northwest 2B/1B League hoops gurus selected the All-Conference teams.

On the boys’ side of things, junior Chase Anderson was tabbed as a First-Team selection, while senior Hurlee Bronec earned Second-Team status.

Anderson led all Coupeville players, boy or girl, in scoring this season, rattling the rims for 339 points.

Bronec, in his first full season as a varsity hoops player, emerged as a tower of power in the paint, especially in the second half of the season and the playoffs.

For the girls, junior Teagan Calkins popped up as a Second-Team pick, with senior Mia Farris receiving Honorable Mention status.

Calkins developed a deadly eye from three-ball territory, and led the Wolves in scoring, topped by a 24-point performance against Concrete.

Farris was a lethal two-way player, providing a spark at both ends of the floor as a shot-maker and shot-denier.

Seniors Ruthie Rozema of Mount Vernon Christian and Brayden Pedroza of La Conner were tabbed as league MVPs, while Haley Cruz Winchell of Orcas Island and Lance Lopez of La Conner were named Coach of the Year winners.

The Orcas Island girls and MVC boys received the team sportsmanship awards.

Booters honored by league coaches

Coming off a season where it was in playoff contention until the final game, the Coupeville High School co-ed soccer squad landed four players on the All-League team.

Senior Cael Wilson, who led the Wolves in scoring with seven goals, was tabbed as a First-Team pick by Northwest 2B/1B League boys’ coaches.

He was joined in receiving honors by three other Class of 2025 members, with Preston Epp and Hurlee Bronec named as Second-Team picks and Ayden Wyman claiming Honorable Mention status.

Wyman notched 13 goals across her first two seasons of high school soccer while leading the Wolf girls’ program, before joining the CHS boys for her junior and senior years after Coupeville was unable to field a girls’ squad.

She was one of two female players to notch All-League honors, joining Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood sophomore Lydia Negash.

Lopez Island, which had a breakout season while finishing 2nd at the 1B/2B state tourney, swept the league’s top honors.

Junior Andris Meissner was tabbed as MVP, with Mycah Kraushaar honored as Coach of the Year and her team also receiving the sportsmanship award.

Orcas Island, which won its second state title, had the most players picked, with seven of its booters receiving First or Second-Team honors.

Coupeville went 4-4 in conference play while vying in a league which produced three of the top four teams in the state, and 6-8-1 overall.

That included a landmark home win over Mount Vernon Christian, its first in 13 games against the perennial power.

Gridiron giants earn All-League honors

One final honor for a pack of Wolves.

With three Coupeville High School players selected on both sides of the ball, seven players from the 2024 gridiron squad landed All-League status when coaches voted.

Among the seven schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League, Orcas Island and Mount Vernon Christian don’t play football, while La Conner, Concrete, and Darrington are currently competing as eight-man teams.

That leaves Coupeville and Friday Harbor as the only 11-man units.

From that talent pool, Wolf quarterback Chase Anderson, who scored a team-high 99 points, was tabbed as the league’s Offensive MVP.

Joining him as First-Team picks on the offensive side of the ball were receiver Jack Porter, tight end Hunter Bronec, and linemen Marcelo Gebhard and Riley Lawless.

Wolf running back Johnny Porter was tabbed for honorable mention status.

Wolf seniors Marcelo Gebhard (54), Hunter Bronec (34), and Jack Porter earned recognition for stellar seasons.

On defense, Anderson (defensive back), Jack Porter (lineman), and linebackers Gebhard, Marquette Cunningham, and Johnny Porter were First-Team picks.

Lawless is a sophomore, Anderson and Cunningham are juniors, while Gebhard, Bronec, and the Porter twins are seniors.

Coupeville, which finished 5-4 overall, 1-1 in league play, also earned the team sportsmanship award.
