No one said this was going to be easy.

Almost every match in the Emerald City League pits the Coupeville High School boys tennis squad against a powerhouse private school, and Monday’s rumble was a main event.

University Prep lives at the state tournament, when its players aren’t otherwise playing year-round, often with private coaches, on high-grade courts.

So when I tell you the Pumas bounced the Wolves 5-0 in a match played at the Tennis Center at Sand Point in Seattle, it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock.

Still, Ken Stange’s CHS squad didn’t roll over, with matches at first singles and third doubles especially competitive.

Drake Borden had an especially large target at the top of the order, as his opponent finished 3rd at state a season ago.

While the loss drops Coupeville to 0-3 in ECL play, the Wolves get two more chances this week, and will shortly see an increase in their eligible players.

CHS returns to Seattle Wednesday to face The Bush School, then hosts Overlake Friday afternoon.

The Wolves, who have had to forfeit #2 singles in each match so far, has been competing with seven players in a league where there are eight varsity slots per team.

But that changes Friday, when a pair of late-comers will finally have enough practices under their belt to earn the chance to swing a racket in a competitive match.

Complete Monday results:

1st Singles — Drake Borden lost to Tyler Wurzer 6-1, 6-4

2nd Singles — CHS forfeits

1st Doubles — James Wood/Mason Grove lost to Nicholas Arron/Axel Andrews 6-1, 6-1

2nd Doubles — Zach Ginnings/Andrew Aparicio lost to Mattias Keaunui/Mitchell Zell 6-0, 6-1

3rd Doubles — Thane Peterson/Koby Schreiber lost 6-2, 6-3

Freshman Andrew Aparicio rebounded “like a beast” Friday, as Coupeville’s C-Team wrapped its season. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The seeds have been planted.

When Scott Fox stepped on the court this season, his first as coach of the Coupeville High School boys C-Team basketball squad, he found a batch of very raw players.

What a difference two months make.

“That first practice, it took us a half hour to run a three-man weave drill,” he said with a chuckle. “And now here we are competing with a solid team like Cedar Park Christian and putting together our best game to date.

“I’m really proud of these kids.”

Friday night’s home game against CPC was the season finale for the C-Team, and they went out scrapping all the way.

Down by just a single point at the half, the Wolves lost leading scorer Jaylen Nitta to a recurring injury and eventually fell 45-29, but Fox walked out of the gym wearing a proud grin.

“We rebounded toe to toe with them,” he said. “Andrew (Aparicio) was like a beast out there tonight, and Chris (Cernick) and Miles (Davidson) were right there with him.”

Before he went down with his injury, Nitta tossed in a team-high 12 points, while Aparicio added a season-best five of his own.

Brayden Coatney (4), Jonathan Partida (4), Ben Smith (2), and Tony Garcia (2) rounded out the Wolf attack.

Having yanked down a rebound, Morgan Stevens dares anyone to be foolish enough to try and take it away from her.

Keeping the ball well away from his defender, Ben Smith waits for a teammate to get open.

Wolf varsity stars (l to r) Tia Wurzrainer, Scout Smith, and Avalon Renninger rule the roost while shooting game film of their JV counterparts.

There were no school classes Monday in Coupeville, but plenty of activity still raged around the high school.

The Wolf girls JV and boys C-Team basketballs quads welcomed Oak Harbor to town for holiday games, and wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken came along for the trip.
