The records may seem unbreakable, but not so fast.

As he graduated this spring, soccer sensation Abraham Leyva left Coupeville High School with season (20) and career (45) goal-scoring records.

What he achieved in three years on the pitch was far beyond what any other Wolf booter had accomplished.

But wait, because there’s a new gunslinger in town and he wants all the records.

Younger brother Aram Leyva, who will be a freshman at CHS in the fall, has been tearing up fields at every level he’s played, and he plans to make a run for family honor.

“I want to beat my brother’s score in soccer, in less time,” he said with a smile.

Leyva, who will also be playing basketball for the Wolves, is a hard-charging, super-friendly young man who doesn’t know, or at least acknowledge, the meaning of “down time.”

“I love being active,” he said. “I usually hate when I do nothing. I get bored.”

While he’s participated in a number of sports — Leyva was a strong runner for the CMS track squad this spring — the “beautiful game” has always drawn the most interest from him.

“With soccer I grew up learning at a young age and I just loved it,” he said. “I have plenty of endurance, which keeps me going in a game.”

He credits his father for working with him on soccer (“My dad has had a giant impact on me by supporting and telling me how to improve”), and one of his CMS hoops coaches for helping him improve on the hard-court.

“Coach Ryan King, cause this year was my first and he made it a great year for me.”

Maybe we forget about this one.

Missing seven players, including six starters, and with a chunk of those in attendance battling illness, the North Whidbey Deception BU14 soccer squad wasn’t able to finish its season in the intended matter.

Instead of taking a win and claiming second place in the final North Puget Sound Soccer League standings, the Deception, who mix Coupeville and Oak Harbor booters, fell 6-0 on the road to the Lake Hills Legends.

Whidbey finished 8-4 overall, claimed third-place in the 11-team league and, even being shut out on the last day, tallied the second-most goals of any team in the league.

Most of that offense came from the Coupeville Middle School kids on the roster, as the Wolves accounted for 31 of the team’s 37 goals.

CMS 8th grader Aram Leyva tallied a team-high 17 goals, including multiple hat tricks, while 7th grader Matthew Kelley punched in 10 scores.

Jake Mitten, who spent a lot of time in goal for the Deception (he stopped 10 of 12 shots in the first half Saturday), netted a pair of goals this season, while Sam Wynn and Sage Downes each scored once.

While NPSL play is done, North Whidbey is currently slated to play in the Founders Cup in Jan.

Aram Leyva’s foot is not cooling off any time soon.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader racked up his third hat trick of the season Saturday to spark the North Whidbey Deception BU14 soccer squad to a huge win on their home field.

The 3-2 win over Issaquah lifted Whidbey, which has a roster comprised of Oak Harbor and Coupeville players, to 8-3 on the season.

It also set up a winner-take-all show-down for second place in the final North Puget Sound League standings.

The Deception travel to Seattle next Saturday, Dec. 19 to face the Lake Hills Legend (8-1-2) in their season finale, with the victor finishing #2 behind the WS Strikers, who went 11-1.

Whidbey got all the goals they needed from their Wolf sharpshooter.

Leyva banged home a goal in the first half, then matched Issaquah with two more in a wild second half.

Whidbey was playing without several of its Coupeville players (Sam Wynn, Jean Lund-Olsen and James Wood were all out), but those who were healthy made an impact.

Matthew Kelley helped Leyva press the attack, while Jake Mitten split time between sweeper and goalie.

Sage Downes and Michael Laska delivered strong play from the striker position.

The first half was about staying warm. The second half about winning.

Raining down four goals after the break, the North Whidbey Deception boys’ soccer squad routed visiting Mercer Island 5-1 Saturday and kept alive its hopes of finishing in second place in league play.

Playing on a cold, windy (but not wet) day at Ft. Nugent Park, the booters got four of their goals from their Coupeville mercenaries, including a second-half hat trick from Aram Leyva.

Fellow Coupeville Middle School student Matthew Kelley gave the Deception their first goal, slipping in a score while being hammered in front of the net shortly before halftime.

That knotted things back up at 1-1 and after the break, Wolf Jake Mitten was untouchable in goal.

With the lanky CMS 7th grader holding down the fort on defense, Leyva found his touch and obliterated Mercer Island.

With set-up help from Kelley and fellow Wolves Sage Downes and Michael Laska, Leyva ran his season scoring total to 14.

The non-Coupeville contingent got into the scoring column late in the game, when Max Brighton rattled home his second goal of the season to pad the final score.

Now 7-3, the Deception have two games remaining on their schedule.

If they win out, they finish in second place.

There is a slight chance they could tie for the league title, but that would require the current leader to collapse over the final two weeks.

Coupeville players have accounted for 28 of the team’s 34 goals this season, with Kelley (10) hot on Leyva’s heels for the team scoring title.

Matthew Kelley

Matthew Kelley (10) will not be denied. The ball belongs to him.

The guys have first.

Middle school basketball officially kicks off next Monday (Nov. 30) when Coupeville hosts Chimacum.

Tip-off time is 3:15, with the 8th graders playing in the high school gym and the 7th graders holding court across the hallway in the middle school gym.

That will hold true for a 10-game schedule which has the CMS boys playing at home on Mondays and on the road Thursdays.

The boys wrap their season Jan. 14, then the Wolf girls will inherit the court starting Feb. 1.

As you mentally prepare for the home opener, here’s a look at the roster, which numbers 27 players including a number of guys who have been already making names for themselves at the SWISH level.
