With spring approaching, Central Whidbey Little League is in dire need of coaches for its baseball and softball teams.

CWLL is looking for 4-5 more volunteers, who will primarily be working with players in the 8-10 age group.

The upcoming spring sports season, which kicks off March 2, is the finale for both the 2019-2020 school year, and for Coupeville’s two-year run in the North Sound Conference.

When a new school year rolls around in the fall, CHS will have dropped down a classification, from 1A to 2B, and will be off to rejoin old-school rivals in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

But, before we get there, five Wolf teams still have a season to play, with one squad — the softball sluggers — seeking to exit with back-to-back league titles.

As you peruse the schedules below, know that Mother Nature will undoubtedly wreak havoc with them at some point.

So, use them as a jumping off point, but also keep an eye out for changes, which you can find at a couple of places.

In the varsity schedules below, asterisks indicate a league game, and to the surprise of almost everyone, four of the five Wolf spring teams have more home games than road trips.

And, while track and field is the only sport which will spend more time on the bus than hanging out in its own grandstand, the program has three home meets, which is still pretty dang good.

Little League moves into on-deck circle

Time to think about the spring.

Central Whidbey Little League is hosting an “Early Registration Day and Skills Camp” Saturday, January 18.

The event runs from noon to 2 PM at the Coupeville High School gym, and is open to children ages 5-15 who live in Central Whidbey (Coupeville and Greenbank).

All age groups (T-Ball, baseball, and fastpitch softball) are included in the skills camp.

Parents are encouraged to register their children at the league’s site — https://www.centralwhidbeylittleleague.com/ — or at the skills camp.

If you get registered by Jan. 18, you save $10.

A second registration day (at full cost) and skills camp is set for Feb. 22.

For next Saturday’s event, players are asked to wear athletic clothing and “good gym shoes.”

It’s recommended they bring their baseball and softball gear, if they have it, though some will be provided for those in need.

Spring is right around the corner.

Must be, as the promise of a new season of baseball and softball action is upon us.

Registration for Central Whidbey Little League opens Sunday, December 1, and you can save $10 through an “Early Bird” special if you sign up before Jan. 15.

Alas, no splash

Denny Zylstra, planning some shenanigans.

Denny Zylstra is one of the true big-timers in the history of Coupeville athletics.

His runs as an athlete, coach, and die-hard supporter have been well-documented, and he has been a member of the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame for some time.

Today, though, thanks to Charlie Burrow, we have a story about a young Denny which I hadn’t previously heard.

One day in the spring of 1958, the Coupeville High School baseball team was returning from a game in Port Townsend aboard the PT-Keystone ferry.

The players were still in uniform because the county stadium where we played in downtown PT didn’t have showers – the team suited up at the Coupeville school, then went by bus to Keystone and walked aboard the ferry.

At that time the PT ferry dock was further north than the current dock and only about a block from the stadium, so CHS saved having to pay the fare for the bus by having the team walk aboard.

Anyway, at some point after we departed PT, someone dared Denny Zylstra (CHS ’58), the team’s leading pitcher, and prankster, to jump off the ferry while it was underway.

He said he’d do it for $35.

So, when enough pledges were raised from players and supporters to meet his price, he began to strip off his uniform preparatory to making the plunge.

But, unfortunately (or, fortunately for Denny) a member of the ferry crew who’d gotten wind of the proceedings intervened and warned us that if he jumped, they’d be calling the sheriff and Denny would be arrested when we arrived at Keystone.

So much for that idea.
