Friday night will be an impactful one in the Coupeville High School gym.

Wolf basketball teams, playing at home for the first time in two weeks, host Friday Harbor in bouts which will have a big impact on potential playoff seeding for the varsity squads.

Things kick off with the girls’ varsity playing in the CHS gym, and the JV boys across the hallway in the middle school gym, with 4:00 tipoffs.

The boys’ varsity and girls JV teams inherit the floors at 5:30ish.

But the games are just a part of the events.

Youth cheerleaders perform at halftime of the varsity boys’ game, capping several weeks of preparation.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, the focus will be on the annual Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser, renamed Coupeville vs. Cancer this year.

Raffle tickets ($1 or donation) will be sold, offering supporters a chance to win goodie baskets made by the CHS cheer team. There will be drawings at halftime of both varsity games.

T-shirts and silicone bracelets commemorating the night will be available for donation. Any extras after players and coaches receive theirs, will be offered for free.

There will also be a poster in the entranceway to the gym that fans can write on to honor those “that are fighting/have fought/have lost” the cancer battle, said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

This year’s event is focusing on all forms of cancer, with pens representing all the cancer awareness ribbons available at the sign-in table.

All money raised will be donated to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which was founded by legendary college basketball coach Jim Valvano.

“Here you go. We scored all the points in this ball.” (Bailey Thule photo)

Another game, another couple milestones.

Coupeville High School junior Nick Guay cracked the 100-point club Friday night, tossing in 13 points at Mount Vernon Christian.

With 95 and counting this campaign, and six from his sophomore season, he now has 101 points for his varsity days.

Meanwhile fellow junior Cole White banked in a team-high 15, pushing his career total to 132.

That puts him, for the moment, in a tie with Craig Anderson on the all-time CHS boys’ basketball scoring chart.

The middle school hoops coach is the father of freshman varsity player Chase Anderson, linking Cole White, whose own dad Greg scored 604 points back in the day, to both father and son.

She went down swinging, and shooting.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone singed the nets for 29 points Sunday in Norway, filling up the stat sheet as she and Baerum pushed undefeated Ulriken hard before falling 70-61.

The loss drops Baerum to 10-5, while Ulriken remains spotless at 14-0.

It wasn’t just points for Stone, as she also snagged 15 rebounds, pilfered five steals, and doled out three assists.

The former Wolf ace topped everyone on the floor in rebounds and steals, while her 29 points was one off the game-high 30 put up by Ulriken’s Stine Austgulen.

The undefeated league leaders opened the game with a 19-12 lead after one quarter, before Baerum trimmed things down to 35-29 at the half.

The third quarter proved deadly, however, as Ulriken went on a 19-8 surge, before Stone and Co. closed the game with a 24-16 tear in the fourth quarter.

Through 15 games in the Kvinneligaen, Coupeville’s progeny has racked up 287 points, 184 rebounds, 32 assists, 42 steals, and 10 blocks.

After two games in as many days this weekend, Stone and her Norwegian compatriots now have a two-week break, not returning to action until Sunday, Feb. 5 when they play Storm Ungdom.

The standings matter, and they don’t.

Case in point — while the La Conner boys currently have a slightly better conference record overall than Coupeville, it’s the Wolves who would be the Northwest League’s top seed to the 2B playoffs.

That’s because of the split nature of a 2B/1B league, where three schools are from the former, and four from the latter.

When the postseason begins, seeding is only based on games between schools at the same level.

That’s why Coupeville’s boys, who beat La Conner the first time out, are 1-0 in the three-team, four-game rumble which matters the most.

The Braves are 1-1, with Friday Harbor at 0-1.

On the girls side of things, La Conner is 2-0, with Coupeville and Friday Harbor sitting on 0-1.

Two of the three 2B schools earn a playoff ticket, with plenty of big games between now and the regular season finales Feb. 10.

The week ahead offers a mix of games for Coupeville, with the Wolves travelling to Concrete Tuesday, Jan. 24, before hosting Friday Harbor Jan. 27.

With three weeks left in the regular season, a look at current win/loss records:

Northwest League boys basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 5-0 13-5
La Conner 3-1 7-7
Orcas Island 3-1 12-6
Coupeville 2-2 9-6
Friday Harbor 1-2 2-11
Concrete 1-5 3-11
Darrington 0-4 3-11

Northwest League girls basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 5-0 16-2
La Conner 4-0 11-3
Orcas Island 3-1 6-8
Friday Harbor 1-2 3-8
Coupeville 1-3 5-8
Darrington 1-3 8-5
Concrete 0-6 1-13

“Bring it.” “Oh, it’s already brought.” (Photo property Marianne Maja Stenerud)

Any day, any team.

Saturday was a day for upsets in the world of Norwegian pro women’s basketball, as Bergen roared out to a big first-half lead, then held on for dear life to upend Baerum 48-46.

The loss, which came despite another rock-solid performance from Coupeville grad Makana Stone, drops her squad to 10-4 on the season.

Bergen, which lost to Baerum by 32 points just a week ago, is now 3-11.

The difference was the second quarter, as Bergen used a 17-6 tear to push its lead out to 34-20 at the halftime break.

Stone and Co. sliced the lead down, pulling within 39-34 after three quarters, and tying the game up in the fourth.

But this was Bergen’s day, as it hit big shots in the final moments to pull back in front and fend off Baerum.

Stone finished with eight points, a game-high 16 rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while teammate Abbey Hoff led all scorers with 16 points.

The former Wolf ace has racked up 258 points, 169 rebounds, 29 assists, 37 steals, and 10 blocks during her second season of pro ball.

Baerum gets an immediate chance to bounce back, playing Sunday against league-leader Ulriken, which sits atop the seven-team Kvinneligaen at 13-0.
