It’s not totally a make-or-break week, but it’s close.

There’s still plenty of games left to play, but the days ahead are important to both Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams as they try and make a statement in conference play.

First up is a trip to La Conner Wednesday, followed by a second bus journey Friday to Mount Vernon Christian.

For the Wolves, that pits them against the current top two teams in the Northwest 2B/1B League standings.

While both contests are important, the La Conner matchups have an extra layer of intrigue, as Coupeville’s playoff seeding is driven by how they perform against the other two 2B schools — Friday Harbor and La Conner.

Two of three 2B teams advance to the bi-district tourney, where the boys will be joined by Auburn Adventist Academy and Northwest Christian from District 2.

The girl’s postseason rumble is a three-team event, with Auburn Adventist rounding out the field, with both tourneys hosted by Coupeville — whether the Wolves are playing or not.

There are two tickets to state for District 1/2 boys’ teams this season, and one for the girls.

As we look ahead to rivalry week, and beyond, where everyone currently sits in the standings:

Northwest League boys basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 3-0 10-5
La Conner 1-0 6-6
Orcas Island 2-1 10-6
Coupeville 1-1 8-5
Concrete 1-3 3-9
Friday Harbor 0-1 1-9
Darrington 0-2 3-8

Northwest League girls basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 3-0 13-2
La Conner 1-0 9-3
Orcas Island 2-1 4-8
Coupeville 1-1 5-6
Darrington 1-1 7-3
Friday Harbor 0-1 1-7
Concrete 0-4 1-10

Makana Stone snags a rebound in Norway. (Photo property Marianne Maja Stenerud)

Seems like she’s pretty good at this whole basketball thing.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone capped a torrid weekend by throwing down yet another double-double Sunday, sparking her Norwegian pro hoops team to its second win in as many days.

Leading from start to finish Baerum bounced Bergen 77-45 to run its record to 10-3 on the season.

Stone and Co. sit in second place in the seven-team Kvinneligaen, trailing Ulriken (13-0) and a half-game up on Asker (10-4).

They’ll get back at it next weekend, with a back-to-back Saturday and Sunday, starting with a rematch against Bergen and finishing with a high-stakes showdown with Ulriken.

Sunday’s rumble was dominated by Baerum’s American ballers, with Stone recording 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots, while Abbey Hoff had 21 points and eight boards.

Julie McCarthy chipped with 10 points to put three players in double-digit scoring.

Baerum came out on fire and never really cooled down.

A 25-15 lead after one quarter of play turned into a 51-30 lead by the half, then a 67-34 advantage heading into the night’s final frame.

Stone, who is in her second season of cashing checks for playing basketball after a year in England, has collected 250 points, 153 rebounds, 26 assists, 34 steals, and 10 blocked shots during her time in Norway.

Right back on track.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone topped the 20-point barrier for the third straight game, helping her Norwegian pro hoops team bounce back from a rare loss.

With the former Wolf tossing in a game-high 21 points and snagging nine rebounds Saturday, Baerum held off scrappy cellar dweller Storm Ungdom 64-50 in the team’s first action in 10 days.

With the win, Stone and Co. get to 9-3 on the season, moving back into sole possession of second place in the seven-team Kvinneligaen.

Baerum, which trails only undefeated Ulriken (13-0), is a half-game up on Asker (9-4), and plays again Sunday, with a rumble against Bergen (2-9) on the schedule.

Saturday’s game was a close one, with Stone and her associates clinging to a 12-11 lead after one quarter of play, and a 23-22 advantage at the half.

The third quarter proved to be decisive, with Baerum using a 20-11 surge to get its lead up to double digits.

The Norwegians were paced by their American assassins, as Abbey Hoff knocked down 17 points and snagged seven boards in support of Stone.

On the season, the former Coupeville ace has collected 231 points, 142 rebounds, 23 assists, 34 steals, and eight blocked shots.

Stone, who was a standout at both Whitman College in Walla Walla and Loughborough University in England, is in her second season as a professional basketball player.

“Nothing but net!” (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

There’s a prize at the end of the rainbow.

Connect on a half-court shot at half time (or from a little closer for the young ones), and a Wolf fan can make off with t-shirts, candy, and the heady buzz of a standing ovation from the fans.

Under the watchful eye of Coupeville High School Athletic Director Willie Smith, shots were fired, nets were popped, and cameras were clicked, as you can see in the pics above and below.

“You shoot like a young me. Can I say I’m proud and … no, I’m not crying … the air conditioning in here is bothering my eyes, that’s all.”

“Dame Lillard’s got nothing on me!”

“Come on baby, get in the basket. I needs me some candy!”

Taygin Jump fires the ball to Anacortes.

“If you miss it, you have to run laps around the gym. So … don’t miss it.”
