We’re at 1,420 points and counting.

Coupeville High School basketball players are making the net jump as the season rolls along, and we’re pretty sure we know who tallied each of those points.

Logan Downes is leading the way, dropping 24.4 points a game at the varsity level, but a couple of JV girls made big moves this past week.

Madison McMillan went off for a season-high 23 in a home win over Orcas Island, while Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo recorded 19 points across her first two games on the CHS hardwood.

Look twice, because it’s not a misprint.

As we head into a new week of basketball, the Northwest 2B/1B League standings are identical on the boys’ and girls’ side of things.

While overall win/loss records are skewed, both Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island hoops programs sit atop the conference at 2-0.

Both La Conner squads are 1-0, even if the league web site tries to count an early non-conference win over Rainer Christian as a league win and tell you the Braves boys are 2-0.

They are not…

Then comes Coupeville and Friday Harbor at 0-1, and both Concrete teams at 0-3, which means the Wolf boys have a little work to do to defend their league crown.

Things should start to diverge as we move forward — for one thing, the Orcas boys are much stronger than their female counterparts — and could start down that path this coming week.

Coupeville is busy, hosting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and Darrington Friday, though there is still some question as whether the MVC game, the first of two against the Hurricanes, counts in the league standings.

After that comes a whirlwind trip to Neah Bay Saturday for non-conference rumbles.

With all that in mind, where we currently sit:

Northwest League boys basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 2-0 9-4
Orcas Island 2-0 9-5
La Conner 1-0 5-6
Darrington 0-0 3-6
Coupeville 0-1 5-5
Friday Harbor 0-1 1-7
Concrete 0-3 1-9

Northwest League girls basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 2-0 11-2
Orcas Island 2-0 3-7
La Conner 1-0 8-3
Darrington 0-0 6-2
Coupeville 0-1 4-4
Friday Harbor 0-1 1-6
Concrete 0-3 1-9

Makana Stone lines up a shot. (Photo property Marianne Maja Stenerud)

It was a split decision.

Back on the hardwood for the first time in two weeks, Coupeville grad Makana Stone was on fire Wednesday, filling up the stat sheet.

Unfortunately, the one-woman wrecking crew couldn’t carry her Norwegian pro hoops team to a victory all by herself.

Stone recorded her seventh double-double of the season, topping all players with 21 points and 19 rebounds, but Asker held off Baerum 78-53.

The loss tightens up the race for second place in the seven-team Kvinneligaen, with everyone chasing undefeated Ulriken, which sits at 12-0.

Baerum and Stone drop to 8-3 and retain a half-game lead over Asker (8-4), with Storm Ungdom (0-11) next up for the former Wolf ace and her teammates.

That game isn’t until Jan. 14, though, as the holiday season continues to feature big breaks.

Stone and her associates have 13 games remaining on a 24-game regular season schedule which runs through late March.

Wednesday’s tilt was the first time Baerum had seen action since Dec. 20, and the game slipped away after a tense first quarter.

Up just 14-13 at the first break, Asker used an 18-6 run in the second frame to open things up, before closing with 22-18 and 24-16 tears across the final two quarters of action.

Stone, who has topped double digit scoring in all 11 of her games in Norway, added five assists, four steals, and two blocked shots.

On the season, she has 210 points, 133 rebounds, 23 assists, 33 steals, and eight blocks.

Stone is in her second season of cashin’ checks for drainin’ jumpers, having played for Leicester in England as a rookie.

The spotlight can be theirs again.

Youth cheerleaders get a second chance to perform in front of Coupeville fans, but this time in a warm gym instead of on a muddy football field.

Athletes in grades 3-6 are eligible, with registration set for Jan. 5-12.

Cost is $30, which gets you a t-shirt, or $50, which also gets you poms.

There will be two practices (Jan. 19 and 26) in the Coupeville High School commons, running from 3:30 to 4:45 PM.

CHS varsity cheerleaders will escort elementary school students during the walk between schools those days.

The junior cheerleaders will join the current Wolf spirit team on the floor for a performance Jan. 27, a night when Coupeville hosts Friday Harbor on Coaches vs. Cancer Night.

From here on out, the games get bigger.

The first portion of the 2022-2023 high school basketball season is in the books, with the arrival of a new year bringing the start of league play.

The Coupeville High School girls return to the floor Wednesday, Jan. 4, hosting Granite Falls in non-league bouts.

Two days later, the Wolf boys join their female counterparts, as CHS hosts Orcas Island in a conference clash.

Home cooking is on the menu as 2023 settles in, with no road games for any Coupeville teams until Jan. 14.
