New CHS hoops Senior Night dates set

The schedule shuffle continues.

Senior Night festivities for the Coupeville High School basketball teams have been moved to this coming week, with events set for different days.

Under the new plan, the Wolf boys will honor their 12th graders Wednesday, Jan. 19, when they host Friday Harbor.

Tip-off for the CHS varsity boys that night is 5:30 PM.

Meanwhile, Coupeville’s girls will conduct their farewells Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host South Whidbey.

Varsity tip-off against the Falcons is 2:45.

Ja’Kenya Hoskins, Izzy Wells, Audrianna Shaw, and Abby Mulholland comprise the Class of 2022 players who suit up for the Wolves.

The boys team will honor Xavier Murdy, Miles Davidson, Logan Martin, Grady Rickner, Hawthorne Wolfe, and Caleb Meyer, as well as the late Bennett Boyles, who waged a valiant battle with cancer when the group was in middle school.

Every point counts.

The Coupeville High School basketball teams only played one game this week — the schedule should pick up a lot next week — but the Wolves rattled home another 145 points.

Add those buckets to the scoring charts, and we’re back today to take a look at updated season scoring stats for all four CHS squads.

We’re trending upward.

The undefeated Coupeville High School boys basketball team, enjoying its best start in two decades-plus, continues to climb in the rankings.

The Wolves, who are 6-0 heading into a big showdown with Mount Vernon Christian, moved from #4 to #3 among all 2B schools when Evans Rankings released its latest numbers Sunday night.

Coupeville passed Lake Roosevelt, which suffered back-to-back losses and plunged from #2 to #13 in the rankings.

Chief Leschi (7-0) holds on to the top spot in 2B, with Ilwaco (8-0) moving up a rung to #2. Okanogan (9-1) and Kalama (5-1) round out the top five.

We’re now three weeks into the rankings, which are the work of noted numbers cruncher Matthew Evans.

A writer and editor whose work has appeared in publications such as Rant Sports and Stoppage Time Soccer, he had Coupeville at #6 first time out.

Two weeks later, the Wolves are knocking on the penthouse door.

La Conner and Friday Harbor — Coupeville’s fellow 2B schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League — currently sit at #33 and #46, respectively.

In the 1B rankings, Mount Vernon Christian is #11, with Orcas Island (#22), Darrington (#27), and Concrete (#47) on the chase.

On the girls side of things, La Conner, which rolled to 10-0 with lopsided wins over Coupeville and Concrete this past week, holds at #4.

The Wolves slip two spots from #22 to #24, with Friday Harbor down at #49.

MVC’s girls, who were obliterated by La Conner earlier this year, hold on to the #1 ranking in 1B, with Darrington (#33), Concrete (#38), and Orcas Island (#41) rounding out NWL teams.

Wolf boys atop league standings

It was the perfect storm, if you wanted very few games played.

The aftereffects of snow and ice mixed with the never-ending pandemic shuffle to keep most Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams off the court this past week.

On the boys side of things, only one of nine scheduled games was actually played, with Coupeville running La Conner off the floor.

Things were slightly more active for girls hoops squads, with an emphasis on the word slightly.

La Conner KO’d Coupeville’s girls, while Mount Vernon Christian blasted Concrete a few days later.

Then, Saturday night, La Conner broke triple-digits, shellacking Concrete in a savage 104-14 win.

Other than that, six of nine scheduled games failed to have a tip-off.

The week ahead is pretty barren, as well, at least for Coupeville, which currently only has one set of games on the schedule.

The Wolves host MVC Tuesday, Jan. 11, with the boys game a showdown for sole possession of first-place in the NWL.

After that, barring pesky Covid positives, or frogs raining down from the skies, CHS goes full-tilt, with four games in five days between Jan. 18-22.

Maybe.

A few more shots tumbled through the net.

Snow and pandemic protocols reduced a three-game week into a one-game week for Coupeville High School basketball teams as they eased their way back onto the floor after the holidays.

But the Wolves did get contests against La Conner in the books, resulting in two wins and two losses.

As we aim towards next week, and the promise once more of actual games, a look at season-to-date scoring stats for all four CHS hoops squads.
