The secret is not playing.

Despite not having any games over the holiday break, the Coupeville High School boys basketball team has jumped two spots in the second roundup released by Evans Rankings.

The undefeated Wolves (5-0) were at #6 among all 2B schools after the first rankings, but now sit at #4 as of Jan. 1.

Chief Leschi (7-0) moves atop the leaderboard, followed by Lake Roosevelt (6-0) and Ilwaco (7-0).

Coupeville leapfrogs Okanogan, which slid from #1 to #5 after absorbing its first loss, and Rainier, which drops from #5 to #7. Both of those teams are 6-1 on the season.

The Wolves are slated to return to Northwest 2B/1B League action this coming Tuesday, Jan. 4, when they host La Conner, which is #33 in the 2B rankings.

Friday Harbor is #48 in 2B, with NWL 1B schools Mount Vernon Christian (#11), Orcas Island (#25), Darrington (#30), and Concrete (#44) popping up in that classification’s rankings.

On the girls side, the Jan. 1 rankings are the first of the season, and they feature Mount Vernon Christian (7-2) as the #1 team in 1B.

Meanwhile, unbeaten La Conner (8-0), which thrashed MVC in an early game, is #4 in 2B.

Coupeville’s girls, who are 4-2 heading into their own showdown with the Braves Jan. 4, are ranked #22 in 2B, with Friday Harbor #49.

The other 1B schools are lumped together, with Darrington (#32), Concrete (#34), and Orcas Island (#35) engaged in a tense brawl.

Evans Rankings, which blows MaxPreps and the WIAA out of the water, is the work of nimble numbers cruncher Matthew Evans.

He’s a writer and editor whose work has appeared in publications such as Rant Sports and Stoppage Time Soccer.

Be part of building a strong basketball future for Central Whidbey.

The Coupeville Youth Basketball Association has had a high turnout of players, but now needs more coaches to keep things going.

The time commitment would be one practice per week, plus one game on Saturdays, and you’ll be working with players in K-5.

Prior coaching experience is not required.

“If you’ve never coached before and don’t consider yourself a basketball wizard… that’s OK!,” said Morgan White.

“We will be providing plenty of support, guidance, and direction to help along the way.”

The CHS girls are in a second-place tie heading into the holidays.

And now, a break.

The Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams reached the holiday shutdown in different fashion, but both are sitting pretty in the standings.

The Wolf boys had their final two games of 2021 — including a first-place battle with Mount Vernon Christian — postponed due to Covid concerns.

Meanwhile, the CHS girls did make it on to the court to play MVC, but also saw a non-conference duel with South Whidbey preempted.

All of the missing games are expected to be rescheduled.

Unless those contests land earlier on an altered schedule than expected, neither Wolf squad will be back on the floor in game action until Jan. 4.

For now, Coupeville can prep for 2022 knowing its boys are in first-place in the Northwest 2B/1B League, and its girls are just a game off of the same status.

Bring on the eggnog, and marinate in the moment.

Skylar Parker fires a pass to an open shooter.

Scoring is the name of the game.

Rebounds, defensive hustle, setting screens — all the little things which help a basketball team win.

But ultimately, it’s the side with the most points on the scoreboard that wins the contest.

With that in mind, we take a gander at season-to-date scoring stats for Coupeville High School players.

PS — A combination of postponed games and some rival schools not having JV teams means the four Wolf squads have all played a different number of bouts.

They shoot, they score.

The Coupeville High School basketball teams combined to collect 228 donations during a holiday gift drive.

Everything will now be donated to the Holiday Help House, which will disperse gifts to families in Coupeville and Oak Harbor.

“It’s a great accomplishment, and shows how much our kids truly care for our community!,” said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

With cookies on the line, the Wolf girls pulled out the win 124-104.

“In a close competition — and after much wailing and moaning and demand of multiple recounts — the girls came out on top!,” Smith said.

“Not sure what kind of cookies they’ll receive from the boys — raisin cookies is what I heard — but, if you see any of our basketball players, give them a hardy high-five and some kudos for a job well done!”
