He’s pursuing the dream.

At home in Coupeville, Chayse Van Velkinburgh is on his way to middle school and will be a 6th grader this fall.

On the soccer field, however, he’s ahead of his age group, often playing with older teammates.

And now the sport has taken him abroad, with Van Velkinburgh spending several weeks in May learning and training in Spain.

While visiting the soccer hot spot, the young Wolf booter practiced with a U17 team in Madrid most mornings, then trained in the evening with fellow 11- and 12-year-olds.

Those latter sessions came with a Leganes program which is among the best in the region.

During his trip, Van Velkinburgh was able to play with multiple teams, offering a unique learning experience.

Taking the field with Alcorcon, Chayse “played very well on the left wing, hitting the crossbar and then forcing the keeper to make a diving save to his left,” according to dad Dustin.

“It was fun to hear people in the stands talking about the pink-haired American.”

Looking snazzy on the Spanish pitch.

Thanks to his play, the younger Van Velkinburgh has been invited to return to Spain for a week in November and train at the high-caliber Real Madrid Youth Academy.

Chayse will be joined on the trip by Thatcher Whiteaker, a former teammate who recently returned to Oak Harbor after his Navy family spent three years in Japan.

The duo currently plays for a select team in Bellingham.

The first trip to Spain — which also included a chance to watch Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League Final — offered a chance to witness an extremely high level of soccer.

“Being in Madrid as they won was something else,” Dustin Van Velkinburgh said. “It’s like the entire city stopped and the only thing that mattered for two hours was that game.

“And the streets erupted afterward. The parties and singing lasted far into the night.

“The quality of soccer Chayse was exposed to has been eye opening. I’m forever grateful for this opportunity for him.”

Chayse Van Velkinburgh didn’t spend too much time sitting on the couch this weekend.

The Coupeville Elementary School fifth grader delivered strong performances in two sports while bouncing between different towns.

When he was in Redmond, Van Velkinburgh played in a state soccer cup game, bashing several shots on goal while leading the rampage on offense.

Take him off the pitch, and rush him back to Mount Vernon, and he played in four basketball games at the Tulip Days Tournament.

Van Velkinburgh poured in 55 points, including 17 against Lummi Island in the day’s final matchup, helping spark his team to the 5th grade title.

Most of his team’s games were actually against 6th grade squads, as they played up after several 5th grade teams dropped out of the tourney.

They were snapped by wanderin’ photographer John Fisken during a windy Saturday, as the host Wildcats rode the weather to storm from behind for a 5-1 win on the pitch.

Our league is #1.

Coupeville’s second season of playing boys soccer in the Northwest 2B/1B League ended with a conference rival winning the state title.

Orcas Island topped Providence Classical Christian 2-1 Saturday night in Sumner, with the game decided in a 4-3 shootout.

The victory, coming in an all-NWL final, gives the Viking booters the first team state title in program history, and the second in school history.

Orcas previously won a girls soccer state title in 2009.

This version of Vikings soccer finished 18-2, beating PCC three times in four meetings.

The two teams split games during the regular season, before Orcas came out on top 1-0 in the district tourney title game.

Saturday’s finale was knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation, then went through scoreless overtime to end in that most-beloved, or most-loathed, of events — “kicks from the mark.”

Orcas goalie Paxton White came up huge, deflecting a PCC ball away from his net on the first shot, before watching a second try go wide left.

The Vikings nailed their first three kicks, with Tommy Anderson-Cleveland, William Ibarra, and Diego Lago finding the back of the net, and seemed to be running away with things, up 3-1.

But there was some drama left, as PCC rallied to net back-to-back kicks, while blocking an Orcas try, pushing things to 3-3 headed into the 10th, and potentially final, attempt.

The ball was on Pedro Guerra’s foot, and the Orcas junior was golden, flicking the title-winning shot past a flailing PCC netminder.

That capped the fifth trip to state for the Vikings booters, whose best previous finish was 2nd place in 2018.

The NWL, which has nine teams for boys soccer — picking up outsiders PCC, Grace Academy, Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood, and Lopez Island — claimed three of four team awards at the 2B/1B state tourney.

Friday Harbor earned 4th place, falling 2-0 to Crosspoint Academy Saturday afternoon.

Overall, NWL schools brought home two team state titles this fall, with La Conner volleyball also winning a third-straight 2B crown.
