Hawthorne Wolfe led the Wolf boys in scoring last year as a freshman.

The countdown to hard-court mania begins.

The Coupeville High School basketball teams take the floor for the first day of practice Monday, Nov. 18, with the season-opening games two weeks later.

Both the Wolf girls and boys are currently scheduled to play more than 50% of their regular season games away from Cow Town, with the girls taking a bigger hit.

Playing for new coaches Scott Fox and Megan Smith, who replace the retired David and Amy King, the CHS girls get just seven of 18 games on their home floor.

Meanwhile, the Wolf boys, who will operate under returning coaches Brad Sherman and Chris Smith, get nine of 19 at their place.

Doubleheaders will play a large role, as there are 11 scheduled – five at home, six on the road.

And last, but not least, there’s a weird quirk to the league schedule.

King’s, which has two teams intent on playing for state titles, approached the other five North Sound Conference schools and proposed playing just one league game with each, instead of the normal two.

That would allow the Knights to stuff their schedule with large-school rivals such as Rainier Beach and Tumwater, which, in theory would better prepare King’s for the postseason run.

On the girls side, all five schools accepted, leaving King’s to play just five league games, while everyone else will compete in nine.

Two schools on the boys side – South Whidbey and Cedar Park Christian – declined, however, and will still play home-and-away with the Knights.

So, that leaves Coupeville, Sultan, and Granite Falls with nine league games, King’s with seven, and the South Whidbey and Cedar Park boys as the only teams with the full 10 contests.

The change affects only basketball.

With that said, here’s an up to the moment look at CHS varsity basketball schedules.

With everyone from incoming freshmen to grizzled seniors, the Wolves brought 19 players to Eastern Washington University.

Packed in like sardines, but enjoying every moment.

The Wolves chomped Cheney.

Coupeville High School boys basketball coaches packed up 19 players this past week and headed to Eastern Washington University for a three-day hoops camp.

While there, the Wolves got the chance to throw down with other teams, and pick up some valuable bonding time.

Coming on the heels of a scrimmage win over Friday Harbor, the summer camp keeps momentum rolling through the offseason, something CHS coach Brad Sherman is always happy to see.

The past, present, and future of Coupeville basketball mingles.

The future Brad Sherman’s of Wolf basketball got to pick up a few lessons from the old-school version.

The Coupeville High School boys basketball coach, and legendary former player, joined up with fellow hoops coaches Thursday and Friday to run a successful skills camp for Coupeville athletes in grades K-8.

The two-day affair drew 75+ basketball players, split between girls and boys.

Sherman was joined by fellow coaches Scott Fox, Chris Smith, Megan Smith, Randy King, Greg White, and Randy Bottorff, as well as current CHS players.

Players were divided into four groups (K-1, 2-3, 4-6, and 7-8) and were offered a great learning opportunity in a fun environment.

As Coupeville coaches build local basketball programs to be strong from top to bottom, the skills camp is a welcome flashback to the sort of events held when Sherman, Megan Smith, and White were young players themselves.

Beat the heat and head inside.

Coupeville High School basketball coaches are offering a fun, informative, two-day skills camp June 20-21, aimed at Coupeville School District students who are entering grades K-8.

The camp, which will go down in the high school and middle school gyms, is set for 10 AM-noon each day, and cost is just $10.

Register by June 6 and you can net a camp t-shirt, as well.

Parents can register by popping over to:

Park the car and stay home. There’s no basketball. (Photo by David Svien)

Snowmageddon 2019 has claimed another event. But not permanently.

The season finale for the youth basketball league run by Coupeville High School coaches and players, originally set for Saturday, Feb. 9, is being pushed back a week.

With snow still falling in many areas, and much more expected, as well as freezing temperatures arriving to possibly turn Whidbey’s roads into ice rinks, postponing an early-morning event seems more than reasonable.

The final week of lessons and games, as well as pictures, will go down 9 AM next Saturday, Feb. 16.

Unless we’re entering a new ice age. Then check back later for updates.
