The ink-stained wretches have heard of Cow Town.

Hot on the heels of the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team cracking the top 10 among 2B schools in the (possibly evil) eyes of the computers, the Wolves have attracted the notice of the humans as well.

The Associated Press voters — that’s newspaper writers for you whippersnappers — have CHS at #10 in their latest poll, which is hot off the presses as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Wolves collected six points, while Columbia (Burbank) tops the polls with 47. Math and all.

The complete poll:

1 – Columbia (Burbank) — (13-0) — 47 points
2 – Colfax — (13-0) — 44
3 – Napavine — (11-0) — 41
4 – Lake Roosevelt — (11-0) — 38
5 – Tri-Cities Prep — (11-1) — 29
6 – Toutle Lake — (10-2) — 24
7 – St. George’s — (9-5) — 10
8 – Kettle Falls — (12-2) — 10
9 – Adna — (9-3) — 9
10 – Coupeville — (9-2) — 6

Others receiving votes:

Liberty Bell — 3
Northwest Christian (Colbert) — 3
Tonasket — 3
Wahkiakum — 3
Toledo — 2
Ilwaco — 2
Brewster — 1

Coupeville High School Principal Geoff Kappes anxiously awaits the next round of computerized basketball rankings. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

I trust the baby more than the bureaucrats.

As we head into the new year, the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team sits at a spiffy 7-2, with its losses coming against always-tough non-conference foes Toledo and Kittitas.

But different computers view the Wolves in different ways.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, whose wheezing ‘n huffing computer recently had a team ranked #1 with a 1-0 record for a win it didn’t actually own, puts Brad Sherman’s squad at #11 among 2B schools.

Evans Rankings, however, is the gold standard for numbers crunchers in the state — especially now that the heir to the throne, wee whippersnapper Carter, has arrived to keep an eagle eye on things — and it places the Wolves at #9.

Both sites have undefeated Lake Roosevelt atop the standings at the moment.

They may be young but have already chosen wisely by embracing basketball. (Stevie Glover photo)

Can you ignore the siren call of the basketball court?

No, you cannot, and should not.

If you have a child in Coupeville in K-5, it’s your responsibility to help encourage your offspring to learn to love the one true sport.

Listen, I don’t make the rules, I just pass them on.

With that being said, registration for the 2024 season of the Coupeville Youth Basketball Association is open now, so get crackin’.

Cost is $40 per player, and that seems very reasonable to introduce a child to what many are calling “God’s chosen sport.”

Yeah, it’s me. I’m “many” in this scenario.

Anyways, last day to register is Friday, Dec. 8, with practice beginning right after the holidays on Jan. 8.

Coupeville girls’ hoops coach Megan Richter knows you get two points for a field goal. This ain’t her first rodeo. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

If you listen carefully, you can already hear the squeak of shoes on hardwood.

The first day of practice for Coupeville High School basketball arrives Monday, Nov. 13, with games beginning about two weeks after that.

Today, as an appetizer, we have schedules for both the Wolf girls and boys programs.

With the caveat that schedules, for any sport, should always be written in pencil, and not pen — even if you plan on laminating them.

So onward, steadfast in the belief that winter weather or other assorted ills will not alter what CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith has put down on paper.

PS — ** means it’s a Northwest 2B/1B League clash.

PPS — If the opponent is a NWL rival, but there’s no **, the game is considered a non-league affair.

Logan Downes flicks a pass towards the end zone. (Bailey Thule photo)

I stand corrected.

Or, more accurately, MaxPreps — where the struggle is endless and the end results questionable — stands corrected.

Well, maybe not corrected so much, but at least hanging its head in shame. Hopefully.

What am I rambling about?

Well, having done a deep dive into the touchdowns passes tossed by Coupeville High School quarterback Logan Downes, I have discovered an error on MaxPreps.

I know, we’re all shocked. Like, really, really shocked … oh … no, now I’m being told none of us are shocked in the slightest.

But anyway, back to heapin’ abuse on MaxPreps, which credits Downes, a current senior, with throwing two TD lobs as a sophomore, when he really had three.

This changes everything! Everything, I say!!

At the very least, the correction does move him one step closer to taking away older brother Hunter’s career TD passing record. So, there’s that.

With six regular season games, and hopefully a playoff run, still ahead for Logan, he sits with 28 scoring passes, third best in CHS gridiron history.

Three as a sophomore while sharing time with Cole Hutchinson under center, in a season where the Wolves had one game cancelled by the wind, and another by injuries.

Then 17 last year, one shy of Joel Walstad’s single-season school record, and eight and counting through the first three games of the 2023 season.

Toss two more scoring strikes, and Logan joins his basketball coach, Brad Sherman (33 TD’s) and big bro Hunter (35) in the “30” club.

The current Wolf gunslinger already holds the single-game school record of five touchdown passes in a game — set last season against La Conner, which travels to Whidbey this Friday for a rematch.

As he chases his sibling in the record books, Logan has connected with 11 different receivers on a TD pass over the past three seasons.

His support crew:

Tim Ursu — 6
Scott Hilborn — 4
Aiden O’Neill — 4
Dominic Coffman — 3
Daylon Houston — 3
Chase Anderson — 2
Hunter Bronec — 2
Peyton Caveness — 1
Henry Ohme — 1
Jack Porter — 1
Malachi Somes — 1
