Oval stars make push for statewide glory

Every second counts. Every inch matters.

As the high school track and field season turns towards the homestretch, every week presents a shuffling of the top marks across the state.

That’s shown this time around, as Coupeville stars try and hold on to their places among the best athletes in the 2B classification.

For the moment, Lyla Stuurmans (800) and Cael Wilson (long jump), who were in the top 10 last Monday, get bumped. But they can get back in.

The Wolves host the Coupeville Classic Invite this Saturday, April 26, before beginning the postseason run through the league, district, and state meets.

The finish line nears, but the battle rages.

Sunny skies, sizzlin’ performances

It was a day for winners.

Hosting its first home meet of the season Wednesday, the Coupeville High School track and field team went wild in the sun, racking up 12 wins, 62 PRs, and a ton of positive memories.

Toss in a team title for the Wolf boys, and the fact that an athlete accidentally left behind by Orcas Island eventually got retrieved, and things were fairly peachy all around.

“Thanks to our all-star crew, it ran smoother than a sprinter on a tailwind,” said CHS coach Bob Martin.

“Christi Messner, Jen Marzocca, Aimee Bishop, and Barbi Ford worked their magic on the timing system, Jerry Helm fired the gun like a pro, and Neil Rixe caught every finish with eagle-eyed precision.

“Huge thanks to the incredible coaches who jumped in to help run events, so every athlete had a chance to shine.

“And let’s not forget our legendary team parents — fueling the crew with hot chili, soup, and enough snacks to power a relay team. It truly takes a village to run a meet, and Coupeville showed up in style.”

The Wolf boys topped the 13-team field with a 219-point explosion, putting them way ahead of runner-up La Conner (103), while the Wolf girls (98) were third, behind Mount Vernon Christian (185) and La Conner (111.5).

Cael Wilson led the way, picking up three individual wins (high jump, pole vault, long jump), while also running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 400 relay squad.

Carson Field (800, 1600, 3200), Katie Marti (discus, javelin), Lyla Stuurmans (800), and Matthew Ward (triple jump) also came out on top, as did the boys 4 x 100 unit.

The Wolves get back at it this Saturday, but with a change in their game plan.

Originally slated to travel to Cashmere, they are instead trekking off to the Forks Lion Club Invitational.

Wolves renew chase for #1

Their time on the sidelines is done.

With spring break having played out last week, Coupeville High School track and field athletes could do little more than bide their time with no new meets.

That allowed for other prep stars from across the state to slip past the Wolves in some places on the top 10 charts for 2B schools.

But now, class is back in session and Coupeville returns to competition at the Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham this coming Saturday.

For Wolves like Carson Field, who slipped from #1 to #4 in the 800 over the course of the past week, the chance to control their own fates is once more open.

Let the number-crunching begin anew!

Booters honored by league coaches

Coming off a season where it was in playoff contention until the final game, the Coupeville High School co-ed soccer squad landed four players on the All-League team.

Senior Cael Wilson, who led the Wolves in scoring with seven goals, was tabbed as a First-Team pick by Northwest 2B/1B League boys’ coaches.

He was joined in receiving honors by three other Class of 2025 members, with Preston Epp and Hurlee Bronec named as Second-Team picks and Ayden Wyman claiming Honorable Mention status.

Wyman notched 13 goals across her first two seasons of high school soccer while leading the Wolf girls’ program, before joining the CHS boys for her junior and senior years after Coupeville was unable to field a girls’ squad.

She was one of two female players to notch All-League honors, joining Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood sophomore Lydia Negash.

Lopez Island, which had a breakout season while finishing 2nd at the 1B/2B state tourney, swept the league’s top honors.

Junior Andris Meissner was tabbed as MVP, with Mycah Kraushaar honored as Coach of the Year and her team also receiving the sportsmanship award.

Orcas Island, which won its second state title, had the most players picked, with seven of its booters receiving First or Second-Team honors.

Coupeville went 4-4 in conference play while vying in a league which produced three of the top four teams in the state, and 6-8-1 overall.

That included a landmark home win over Mount Vernon Christian, its first in 13 games against the perennial power.

One final shot, for glory and praise.

The Coupeville High School co-ed soccer squad wrapped its season Thursday with an awards banquet.

Wolf coaches Robert Wood and Kimberly Kisch handed out an assortment of mementos to their booters, who were fighting for a playoff berth right up through the final day of the season.
