Call ’em the fab four.

Or fab five, because that works too.

Northwest 2B/1B League volleyball coaches doled out awards recently, with four Coupeville High School spikers (and their coach) honored for a season which saw them return to state.

Junior power hitter Mia Farris and senior middle blocker Grey Peabody notched First-Team All-conference honors, while junior sniper Lyla Stuurmans was tabbed for the Second-Team.

Junior setter Katie Marti, who racked up 500+ assists for a Wolf team which went 12-7, earned Honorable Mention status.

Rounding out the Coupeville honorees was the man with the plan, as Cory Whitmore was named Coach of the Year after crafting the end of La Conner’s 12+ year run as an undefeated league juggernaut.

Orcas Island, which replaced the Braves as NWL champs, got the MVP, with senior Bethany Carter blasting her way to the award.

The Vikings also received the team sportsmanship trophy.

The complete teams:

First-Team All-League

Ava Ashcroft – Junior – Orcas Island
Mia Farris – Junior – Coupeville
Allie Heino – Senior – Mount Vernon Christian

Logan Downes is ready to bust records and take names. (Andrew Williams photo)

Logan Downes has a chance to get legendary.

The Coupeville High School senior enters a new basketball season on the cusp of breaking some of the biggest records in school history.

Even with Covid limiting the Wolves to 12 games during his freshman campaign, Downes sits with 778 career points, good for 15th all-time for a boys’ hoops program which started in 1917.

He’s 89 points from cracking the top 10, and 360 from passing Jeff Stone and Mike Bagby to become the #1 male scorer in school history with 1,138 points.

Now to top Brianne King (1549) and be the ultimate #1 at CHS, he’d have to virtually double his stats, adding 772 points as a senior.

Before we rule out that being a possibility, remember that Downes poured in 554 points as a junior, in a season where Coupeville missed the state tourney.

That was just 90 points shy of Stone’s school single season record of 644 from 1969-1970, and almost 100 more than the previous #2 (Jeff Rhubottom with 459 in 1977-1978).

While Downes record chase will be ongoing point of interest, there are nine other active Wolf boys who have scored in a varsity contest.

Seniors Cole White (200) and Nick Guay (136) lead that pack, giving CHS coach Brad Sherman plenty of scoring options.

Lyla Stuurmans dreams of hoops action. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Put the ball in the bucket and live forever.

Well, at least in terms of your name forever being etched in the annuals of Coupeville High School basketball.

Over the past 49 seasons, there have been 241 Wolf girls who have tickled the twine, whether it was for one point or 1,549 of them.

Actually, that comes with an asterisk, as we still have yet to document who scored during that first season in 1974-1975.

Other than that, we’re pretty solid, minus a point here or a point there.

Heading into season #50, which comes complete with an anniversary celebration Dec. 16, our current active scoring leader is junior Lyla Stuurmans, who sits in 89th place.

After making her debut as an 8th grader, “The Franchise” has rung up 130 points across three seasons, and her numbers have gone up each season.

Coupeville has five other scorers slated to return this winter, and they’ve combined to tally 99 points during their time in a varsity uniform.

Skylar Parker (right) is one of six active Coupeville girls who have scored in a varsity basketball game.

With the first game set for Nov. 27 at Mount Baker, here’s a look at up-to-the-moment career scoring stats.

Chase Anderson busts up a play on defense. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Chase Anderson can kill you on both sides of the ball.

The Coupeville High School sophomore was hailed by Northwest 2B/1B League football coaches, tabbed as a First-Team All-Conference pick on both offense and defense.

Anderson, who led the Wolves in touchdowns and total points this season, was recognized for his work at wide receiver and defensive back.

Wolf QB Logan Downes plots strategy with coach Brett Casey.

Joining him on the First-Team offense were senior quarterback Logan Downes, junior tight end Hunter Bronec and senior linemen Zane Oldenstadt and William Davidson.

Junior receiver Jack Porter and sophomore running back Aiden O’Neill copped Honorable Mention.

Coupeville also landed four players on the First-Team defensive unit.

Anderson was joined by junior linebacker Marcelo Gebhard, as well as senior linemen Mikey Robinett and Jaje Drake.

O’Neill, who played safety, and freshman defensive back Davin Houston earned Honorable Mention status.

Makana Stone plays keep away with the basketball. (Photo property of Erik Berglund)

The American was red-hot, but she could have used a little more help from the locals.

Despite filling up the stat sheet Sunday in Norway, Coupeville grad Makana Stone wasn’t quite able to carry her pro basketball team to a win against her former franchise.

Baerum rode a 27-10 first-quarter explosion to a 67-55 victory over host Ammerud, dropping the Queens to 2-3 on the young season.

The loss came despite Stone throwing down a game-high 25 points, snatching a team-best 14 rebounds, and adding four assists, five steals and a blocked shot to her superb all-around performance.

This was the second time the former Wolf ace squared off with the franchise she played for last season, though she and Ammerud came out on top in that first meeting.

Not quite the same result in the rematch, as Baerum controlled the game from start to finish.

That 27-10 lead after one quarter of play blossomed into a 45-23 margin by the half.

And while Ammerud was able to trim down things a bit in the second half, the Queens struggled from the field, with only Stone and 36-year-old teammate Alexandra Polishchuk topping three points on the day.

Coupeville’s dynamo, now in her third season of pro hoops, has racked up 95 points, 61 rebounds, 21 assists, 14 steals, and six blocks through the first five games.

Ammerud returns to action next Sunday, Nov. 19 when it squares off with Asker (3-3).

After that, Stone and Co. get the holidays off, not playing again until early December.
