Football playoff hopes take a hit

The playoff dream isn’t dead, but it’s on life support.

After falling 28-14 Friday night on Friday Harbor in a penalty-heavy clash, the Coupeville High School football squad will need a late-season rally to get its shot at the postseason.

With the loss, the Wolves slip to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 0-5 overall, while the Wolverines sit at 1-0, 2-3, and are in the driver’s seat for the conference’s lone 2B playoff berth.

Coupeville plays non-league foes the next two weeks, traveling to South Whidbey to battle for The Bucket, before hosting high-flying Adna.

Then, everything comes down to the regular-season finale Friday, Oct. 24, when CHS gets a second crack at Friday Harbor, but on its home turf at Mickey Clark Field.

Win and earn the season split with the Wolverines, and Bennett Richter’s squad will force a tiebreaker. Lose, and Coupeville will watch their gridiron arch-rivals advance.

During round one, the Wolves picked up touchdowns from Chase Anderson and Aiden O’Neill, but were stung by whistle-happy refs.

It was Anderson’s third score of the campaign, while O’Neill reached the end zone for the first time this season.

CHS spikers earn split

Everyone aims extra hard for the big dogs.

With the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad having gone undefeated in league play last year, followed by a 4th place finish at the state tourney, the Wolves are being hunted.

And, with a young, rebuilding team in place, other teams are getting a bit of revenge from time to time.

Thursday night that payback belonged to visiting Orcas Island, which came from behind to topple Coupeville 17-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-19.

The loss drops CHS to 1-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-5-1 overall.

The Wolves have a prime opportunity to bounce back, however, hosting Friday Harbor, a team they have already beaten once this season, this Tuesday, Oct. 7.

After that, Coupeville closes the regular season with four of its final five matches on the road.

JV pulls out a thriller:

The winningest CHS team in any sport this fall is the second unit of spikers, which now carries a 3-1 mark in league play, and a 5-2 record overall.

The young Wolves latest victim was Orcas, which fell 25-14, 21-25, 15-12 in a battle which went to the limit.

A major key for Coupeville was its service game, which accounted for 16 aces, with Emma Leavitt (7) and Sydney Van Dyke (6) leading the way.

Wolves zip through the rain

They ran so fast the raindrops never hit them.

Dodging Mother Nature’s liquid assault Wednesday, the Coupeville High School cross country squad hosted its lone home meet of the season at picturesque Fort Casey State Park.

The Wolves and rivals from five other schools covered a 5,000-meter course, with Mount Vernon Christian and Evangel Christian snagging team titles in girls and boys, respectively.

Evangeline Fikkert of MVC and Joshua Sarr of Evangel earned top individual honors, with senior George Spear and freshman Mikayla Wagner pacing CHS.

While the weather got a bit wet ‘n wild, Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting was beaming like the sun afterwards.

“Beautiful day to set up; as soon as they started the race the skies opened up!” she said with a laugh. “IT POURED!!

“They all ran amazing! Such a beautiful course! Great PR’s! A memorable race for sure!”

The Wolves get right back at it this Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to University Place to take part in the John Payne XC Invitational.

CHS net crew grounds Falcons

A trip to the big city was the answer.

Playing in Auburn Monday, both of the Coupeville High School volleyball teams swept to victories, the first time the Wolves pulled off the successful double dip since opening night.

It also brought an end to a never-ending road trip which had seen the CHS varsity play five of its last six matches away from Cow Town.

Coupeville’s spikers now have three of their next four at home, hosting Orcas Island (Oct. 2), Friday Harbor (Oct. 7), and La Conner (Oct. 16), with a trip to Mount Vernon Christian wedged in there Oct. 14.

How Monday played out:

 

Varsity:

Coupeville controlled play from start to finish, beating host Auburn Adventist Academy 25-14, 25-10, 25-7 to get to 3-4-1 on the season.

The quality non-conference win earned a nod of approval from Wolf coach Scout Smith.

“Varsity did a great job being adaptable and improving with every set,” she said. “We have been stressing lately the importance of limiting unforced errors, and last night we improved on that in every set.”

Smith shuffled her lineup a bit, with Dakota Strong anchoring the middle, Capri Anter being called upon to play multiple positions, and swing player Adeline Maynes used as a service specialist.

“I love that we have these opportunities to face new challenges that force us to become a better and more flexible team,” Smith said.

“Shout out to Adie for being a continually versatile and selfless player.

“Adie is only ever concerned with how well the team is playing and never her individual accolades,” Smith added. “She will step into any role that benefits the team.”

Powered by a season-best performance from freshman setter Emma Leavitt, the young Wolves romped to a 25-12, 25-12, 15-5 victory.

The well-balanced win lifts Coupeville’s second squad to 4-2 on the season.

“Our JV team is really start to hit its stride,” Smith said. “The team is beginning to gel and play really well together.”

The Wolves got contributions across the board, with another freshman, Kennedy O’Neill, drawing particular praise.

“Shoutout to Kennedy for stepping up as a leader,” Smith said. “She has done a great job stepping up these last few games and is showing her quality not only in her skills but also in her leadership qualities.

“We are very excited to see how she will continue to grow as the season progresses and in years to come.”

Wolf ace makes college baseball debut

The uniform is crisp, the skill level impeccable.

Landon Roberts, a fifth-generation Coupeville High School grad, has taken his love for baseball to the next level, making his debut with Walla Walla Community College.

His first outing repping the Warriors came Sunday against a crew from Spokane, with the former Wolf playing multiple positions during a season-opening doubleheader.

Roberts pitched 1.2 innings of relief in the first game, before patrolling centerfield for five innings in the finale.

The former Wolf also collected a single and a walk in three trips to the plate, scoring twice and picking up an RBI.

Walla Walla plays fall ball doubleheaders through the end of October, before Roberts and Co. move into weight and strength training for two months.

Games pick back up in mid-February, if Mother Nature allows it.

During his CHS days, Roberts, who hails from a large clan of very successful Wolf athletes, was a captain for his cross country, basketball, and baseball teams.
