Gebhard still a doggone success

The queen has not left her throne.

Coupeville grad Gabriella Gebhard continues to excel in the world of competitive dog showing, guiding her canines to multiple awards and accomplishments.

The former Wolf was busy this weekend, with her dog Promise, who she bred and finished, impressing the judges.

Needing a three-point major to finish her championship, Promise “went winners bitch for a four-point major to finish and then went best of winners and best of opposite over the specials to make it a five-point major!” Gebhard said.

The duo also won owner/handler best of breed, and, pending AKC approval, Promise gets a promotion and will be known as “CH Set’r Ridge’s Everlasting Promise.”

“I am so proud of my bred by girl, finished entirely by me, shown only in the bred by class!” Gebhard said.

Along with continuing her lifelong love of showing dogs, Gebhard is also a 4-H trainer with a K-9 Korps dog club and works with young handlers who are following her into the canine world.

“She might have graduated but has kept her passion going!” said mom Stephanie.

Piling up stats, piling up wins

Her bat still has its bark.

Coupeville grad Madison McMillan tallied three more RBI’s Sunday and scored a run, helping her Edmonds College softball squad keep its win streak alive.

Sweeping visiting Skagit Valley College 22-1 and 13-4 in a doubleheader, the Tritons get to 16-1 on the season as they head towards the halfway mark of the schedule.

Edmonds, which is 9-1 at home and 7-0 on the road, has 24 regular season games left, with a home twin-bill against Highline College set for this coming Wednesday, Mar. 25.

McMillan, a freshman third baseman, has seen action in 12 games, racking up a .391 batting average while hitting two home runs and 13 RBIs.

She has nine hits, eight runs, and three walks, as well.

The former Wolf ace, best known for crushing home runs which were later found down the street in the Prairie Center parking lot, was a three-sport star and stellar student during her CHS days.

She was a key member of Wolf volleyball, basketball, and softball teams, helping lead the spikers and sluggers to glory at the state tourney.

Temps (slightly) rise, track stars soar

They’re in a groove now.

The second high school track and field meet of the season arrived Saturday, and it was a fairly big one as Coupeville hit the road to participate in the 25-team Rainier Icebreaker.

While far from home, the Wolves found strong competition, a smattering of top times and marks, and, lo and behold, even some blue skies.

“Beautiful weather at Rainier today,” said CHS coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting.

“Funny how nice 52 (degrees) with a little sun feels after dealing with the rain and 30-40-degree temps most of the season.

“We may have even got a little burnt.”

Shining brightly under the sun, the Wolves earned several top-five performances, with sophomore Wyatt Fitch-Marron claiming top team honors with a 2nd place showing in the high jump.

He was joined by fab frosh Tamsin Ward (3rd in the shot put and 5th in the high jump), Lillian Ketterling (5th in the pole vault), and the mixed 4 x 400 relay unit, which hit the tape in 4th place.

That co-ed crew was comprised of Olivia Hall, Brian Thompson, Ketterling, and Edmund Wilson.

Overall, the Rainier girls and Elma boys collected team titles, with Coupeville finishing 14th and 15th, respectively.

With two meets in the books, the Wolf coaches like what they’ve seen, and are anticipating many more highlights to come.

“We saw several PRs and strong performances (today),” Martin and Bitting said. “And we’re looking forward to continued growth over the next month.”

Next up for Coupeville, or at least part of the roster, is a road trip Saturday, Mar. 28 to the 4th annual Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

Hey, Mother Nature … let ’em cook

Well, let’s try this again.

Wet weather across Washington state washed away most scheduled games this past week, limiting the number of wins and losses posted by Northwest 2B/1B League teams.

But hope burns eternal, so Coupeville and its conference counterparts head into a new week hoping on-field action will replace thumb twiddling.

The Wolf girls’ tennis squad is slated to host Friday Harbor Tuesday, with baseball and softball set for home-and-away clashes with the same rival.

The CHS diamond squads host Wednesday, before bouncing between islands Thursday on a potential road trip.

Finally, Saturday will see the Coupeville track and field squad, or part of it at least, head off to the Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

As the Wolves plow into another week, here’s where things stand through Mar. 22:

Diamond men duel with big city boys

The final score doesn’t tell all.

While Meridian tacked on some runs late to make its 16-7 win Saturday over visiting Coupeville seem more lopsided, the diamond clash was mostly a back-and-forth affair.

And while the non-conference loss drops the Wolf baseball squad to 1-1 on the season, delivering a strong effort against a traditional power, especially one repping a larger student body, is a true positive for Steve Hilborn’s team.

Coupeville, which kicks off Northwest 2B/1B League play next week with a home-and-away series against Friday Harbor, got on the board first Saturday.

The Wolves picked up four of their 10 walks in the top of the first, with Carson Grove gliding home to score on a passed ball.

While Meridian responded with five runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame, CHS picked up two tallies in the second to cut things back to 5-3.

Free passes were again key to Coupeville’s offensive efforts, with Chris Zenz, Chase Anderson, and Grove showing off eagle eyes at the plate.

Camden Glover capped things with an RBI single, one of three base-knocks the senior had on the day.

Off to a sizzlin’ start, he’s racked up seven hits across just the first two games.

From there, both teams picked up a run, before Meridian pushed five runs across in both the fourth and fifth innings to widen the gap.

Even as the game threatened to slip away, the Wolves continued to scrap for runs, however, scoring three in the top of the fifth.

Leo Rodriguez smacked two hits Saturday in Bellingham.

The big blow was a two-run double to left field off the bat of Leo Rodriguez, as he put together one of his best performances in a Wolf uniform.

On the mound, Coupeville split duties between hurlers Coop Cooper, Glover, Grove, and Anderson, with the latter making his first appearance on the baseball diamond since his sophomore season.

Now a senior, Anderson transitioned to track and field as a junior, earning two medals at the state meet, and he competed in this year’s opening track meet Wednesday in La Conner.

Saturday, he picked up two strikeouts in an inning of work, while Cooper (5), Glover (1), and Grove (2) made it 10 K’s for the team.
