After tossing in four scores Saturday at Nooksack, Derek Leyva has 30 career goals.

Aram Leyva has five goals through four games as a junior, and 24 career tallies.

They’re one swing of the foot away from history.

The Leyva clan — Abraham, who graduated in 2016, and current juniors Aram and Derek — are the best goal-scorers Coupeville High School boys soccer has ever had.

And now, as Aram and Derek prepare to play King’s at home Tuesday night (6:00 PM) in their league opener, the family is just a single score shy of its 100th goal.

Abraham exited with a school-record 45 goals, having played for the Wolves from 2014-2016.

His cousin, Derek, made his debut on the CHS pitch in 2018, and is coming up fast behind Abraham, having rattled the net for 30 goals.

Not to be forgotten, Aram, who is Abraham’s younger brother, has peppered in 24 scores between 2017 and the two goals he scored Saturday at Nooksack.

That puts the Leyva’s 1-2-3 on the CHS career scoring chart, with William Nelson (20 goals) and Ethan Spark (17), who both graduated in 2018, rounding out the top five.

Combined, the Leyva trio have 99 goals, and should only go higher with Derek and Aram still having at least nine more games to play during the current season.

Over the years, the three snipers have combined to score at least one goal against 20 schools, with Chimacum, Forks, Port Townsend, Nooksack Valley, and Vashon Island their favorite targets.

As the family races towards that 100th goal, here’s a look at how the three booters have piled up their stats.

College baseball players CJ (left) and Hunter Smith hang out with the true star of the family, lil’ sis Scout. (Charlotte Young photo)

The Smith boys are settling into the college baseball life.

After playing four games over the weekend, the Green River College baseball squad, and their Coupeville stars, are coming up fast on the quarter mark of the season.

The Gators have hit a bit of a downward spiral in recent days, dropping their last five to slide to 3-6 on the season, nine games into a 38-game schedule.

But two of the bright points for Green River have been CHS grads CJ and Hunter Smith.

The former is the team’s top relief ace, while the latter is spending his days starting at second base or shortstop.

CJ has appeared in four games, recording his team’s only save and posting a 1.93 ERA.

That’s the lowest number for any Gator pitcher with more than one appearance.

The older of the Smith brothers has thrown 4.2 innings, faced 22 batters, given up just one earned run, whiffed two and plunked another two.

Hunter has started in eight of nine games, racking up three hits, including a triple, while walking four times, scoring four times, and collecting three RBI.

In the field, he has 17 put-outs and a team-high 16 assists.

While the brothers are separated by two years, they are both in their freshmen season at Green River.

After putting in the work, Coupeville junior Mallory Kortuem currently has the second-fastest time in the 400 of any 1A girl. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

If the track season ended after the first meet, Coupeville High School would have two new state champions.

Now, of course, this is mid-March and the big showdown in Cheney doesn’t happen until the end of May.

So, simmer down, David.

But, that being said, as of this moment, the Wolves have the top time among all 1A athletes in two different events.

Danny Conlisk (200) and Jean Lund-Olsen (100) currently sit in the top slot, while Mallory Kortuem (400) and Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles) sit in 2nd in their respective events.

Overall, CHS has 13 athletes (nine girls and four boys) currently residing in the 1A Top 10 in at least one event, with eight of those Wolves popping up in two different categories.

As I admitted above, it’s early, with a lot of schools across the state yet to taste competition for the first time.

But here, in the moment, Coupeville is kickin’ fanny and takin’ names, so let’s celebrate the early success.

Coupeville freshman Mckenna Somes scored three times Saturday, while playing in her first high school softball game. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

If it wasn’t for the mercy rule, the game might still be going.

Scoring the maximum five runs in each inning Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV softball team paddled 2A Lakewood 20-6 in a game played on a neutral field in Oak Harbor.

Nine of 11 Wolves scored at least once, while the young guns racked up 10 hits and 14 walks in their season opener.

The run-fest started in the bottom of the first inning, where Coupeville didn’t record a single out while going through the first seven slots in the lineup.

And it didn’t let up from there, as the Wolves picked apart Lakewood’s pitching, while their own hurler, Mollie Bailey, whiffed 10 Cougars.

The opening salvo for Coupeville started with back-to-back walks to Audrianna Shaw and Mckenna Somes, followed by three straight base-knocks.

Izzy Wells teed off on a pitch, launching a double, while Bailey and Kylie Van Velkinburgh plunked singles into open gaps in the defense.

Sisters Ivy and Lily Leedy closed the first-inning assault by demonstrating eagle eyes, both eking out free passes on walks.

The rat-a-tat offense never let up for Coupeville, with Wells smashing a triple, Bailey and Van Velkinburgh launching doubles, and Shaw, Bailey, and both Leedy sisters tacking on singles.

Shaw, Somes, and Heidi Meyers each picked up three base on balls, Chloe Wheeler and Amanda Thomas walked twice apiece, and Morgan Stevens helped anchor the rock-solid Wolf defense while stationed in left field.

Coupeville, after waxing a big-school opponent, gets a different kind of challenge in its next game.

The Wolf JV hosts Concrete Wednesday, Mar. 20 and the 4 PM game is against the 2B school’s varsity squad.

Taking a break from smashing people in the shot put, Emma Smith eyeballs how Coupeville sports teams are doing in the early-season standings. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Everyone’s moving at their own pace.

Spotty weather and raging illness has disrupted the start of spring sports a bit for everyone, but some teams are taking a harder shot to the kidneys than others.

Coupeville High School softball and boys soccer have already played four games apiece, while baseball is finally getting churning with two contests under its belt.

Meanwhile, girls tennis continues to practice, but has yet to face an opponent wearing a different uniform.

And, while track and field is coming off of its first meet, we exclude them from these weekly league standings stories, as the sport isn’t about compiling team win/loss records.

Next week promises a ton more games, weather and health permitting, and yet the Wolf netters still won’t get on the big board, as their first match, barring any late additions to the schedule, doesn’t go down until Mar. 28.

Until then, they, and the rest of us, can spend a few moments marinating in the standings through Mar. 17:
