No, it will never, ever stop raining this spring.

That point was driven home yet again Tuesday, as the Coupeville High School girls tennis squad traveled to Silverdale, got on the court, but then couldn’t finish its match.

A key 1A Olympic League tilt, it ground to a halt with four of seven varsity matches in the book and things tied 2-2.

Of the three remaining matches yet to be finished, CHS trailed at #2 singles, led at #3 doubles and was just starting #4 doubles.

The match will be completed Apr. 26 when Coupeville returns to Silverdale for the third and final match of the season with the Eagles.

For the moment, the Wolves (2-0 in league play, 3-5 overall) hold a game-and-a-half lead on Klahowya (0-1, 1-5) and Chimacum (0-1, 1-6) in the league standings as they chase a fourth-straight conference title.

Coupeville is scheduled to host Friday Harbor Wednesday (3:30 PM) in a non-conference match.

The biggest surprise? The weather forecast for Central Whidbey is for 56 degrees and … NO RAIN.

I’ll believe it when I see it…

Semi-complete Tuesday results:

New coaches, same hunt for excellence.

Former Coupeville High School cheerleaders Emily (Norris) Stevens and Amanda (Streubel) Jones have returned to their alma mater to reinvigorate the cheer program of their teen years.

The duo replace the departed Cheridan Eck, and are hard at work as fall sports practice officially begins.

Stevens, the head coach, has 21 girls on a tentative roster, though that may change as the Wolves work towards the football season opener Sept. 1.

Seniors Claire Mietus and Mckenzie Meyer, both veterans, lead the way.

“The cheer team is going to stop being influenced by the stereotype that “We’re Coupeville,” Mietus said. “We want to have pride in our squad as well as ourselves and not have our actions defined by others expectations.”

The current roster (which is still in flux):

Jessica Acosta
Ashleigh Battaglia
Julie Bucio
Kayla Caudle
Coral Caveness
Maggie Crimmins
Kaley Grigsby
Gaby Halpin
Abby Hamilton
Ja’Tarya Hoskins
Isabel Hucke
Nanci Melendrez
Mckenzie Meyer
Claire Mietus
Mira Mostafavinassab
Heather Nastali
Abby Parker
Moira Reed
Mica Shipley

The many talents of Claire Mietus. (John Fisken and Cheridan Eck photos)

A few of the many talents of Claire Mietus. (John Fisken and Cheridan Eck photos)

Claire Mietus will take over the world some day.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, hops from one activity to another and excels at all of them.

A fixture on the Wolf sports scene — where she helps anchor the cheer squad through football and basketball seasons — Mietus is lucky she can find time to pick up her pom poms.

She’s also (deep breath) the president of the Leo’s Club, a service organization, plays in the school’s jazz band, is an ASB officer for the Class of 2018 and competes in Science Olympiad.

Claire is a brilliant young woman, outgoing, friendly and deeply caring to those around her, someone who exudes a serene, inquisitive spirit.

It should come as little surprise that she aspires to be a world-changer, with plans to be a cardiovascular surgeon and work with Doctors Without Borders.

I have no doubt she’s well on her way to doing amazing things.

There are some people who you need to merely observe from a distance and you can tell they are destined for greatness, and Miss Mietus has always seemed to have that something extra.

As she celebrates her cake day, we, the fans, want to take a moment to wish her all the best and also to sing her praises for what she’s accomplished already (and everything still to come).

Happy birthday, Claire.

Go into each new moment knowing how much others think of you, and how much they respect your drive and compassion.

You’re a superstar, a bright, shining one, and it’s for all the right reasons.

Keep on amazing us, every day.

And the cheer spirit never dies. (Mietus photo)

The spirit stayed strong.

Less than 24 hours after cheering at their own football game, the Coupeville High School cheer squad spent Saturday at the University of Washington, taking part in its annual Spirit Day.

The Wolves, who were running through their planned performance as fans trickled in to Mickey Clark Field Friday night, joined up with cheer squads from across the state.

Working with U-Dub cheerleaders, they performed during the Huskies 41-3 dismantling of Portland State.
