Chelsea Prescott (John Fisken photo)

Chelsea Prescott will terminate you. (John Fisken photo)

She is the future, and the future looks pretty dang impressive.

When you look at middle school athletes and try and forecast how they will do at the high school level, it’s always a bit tricky.

A million little things can change, and the kid who was a star at one level never hits it as big at the next, or the kid you never saw coming grows into a superstar.

But let me say this — I’m betting the farm on Chelsea Prescott.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader, who hits the big 1-4 today, reminds me a lot of Lindsey Roberts, who, as a CHS sophomore, is currently on target to earn the maximum 12 athletic letters.

Having watched Chelsea play volleyball and basketball at CMS, and both baseball and softball with Central Whidbey Little League, she’s the real deal.

As a spiker, she lashed one serve that (literally) exploded a rival player’s face, sending blood spraying and ensuring no one on the other team will ever want to come back to Coupeville.

Fear the Wolf. That’s a good thing, I say.

On the hard wood, Prescott is a scoring machine who already has a confidence rare at the middle school level, and on the diamond, she’s the complete package, whether pitching or playing short stop.

Chelsea has power, speed, hits with a rare aggression and, again, possesses quiet confidence.

And that is why I think she will be successful at whatever sports she plays at the next level, because she is confident, yet not egotistical, plays to win and is quick to work with her teammates and even quicker to listen to her coaches.

She’s also 14 years old, and I don’t want to put too much pressure on her.

I hope she has a phenomenal prep career (makes for better stories for me) but I hope, more importantly, that Chelsea continues to enjoy herself.

That she gets out of sports what she wants, but that she is also successful in every other part of her life.

From the stands, she comes across as a low-key, friendly young woman, one with a strong, supportive family. I think that bodes well for her future, as an athlete, a student, and a person.

As she celebrates her birthday today, I just want to chime in with my own well wishes.

It has been a treat to watch you play so far, and I look forward to watching your future successes unfold, whether they be on or off the athletic stage.

Happy birthday, Miss Prescott.

Randy King

CMS 7th grade coach Randy King is not putting up with any shenanigans today.

They dropped the hammer.

Scoring in big bunches Thursday, both of the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball squads rolled to blowout wins at Chimacum.

The 8th graders rode a season-high 27 points from gunner Daniel Olson to capture a 71-50 victory, while the 7th graders were brutally efficient on defense en route to a 44-18 romp.

The wins lift the Wolf 7th graders to 5-3 and the 8th graders to 2-6 on the season.

The young guns jumped out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter, then held Chimacum to four or less points in every period after that.

Spreading their offense out between eight players, the 7th graders were led by Hawthorne Wolfe (12 points) and Connor Barton (11), who combined to outscore the Cowboys on their own.

Grady Rickner tossed in six, while Joseph Starr and Xavier Murdy both knocked down four points apiece.

Caleb Meyer (3), Gabe Shaw (2) and Logan Martin (2) rounded out the scoring, while Cody Roberts, Tony Garcia, Logan Wertz and Aiden Burdge also saw floor time for CMS.

When Coupeville’s 8th grade unit took the floor in the nightcap, they matched the 7th grade, grabbing a 13-8 lead after one quarter.

But then they ramped up the offense, big time, raining down 22 in the second and another 23 in the third to put the game on ice.

Olson and Sage Downes took turns raining down pain on the Cowboys, combining for 49 points on the afternoon.

Downes got all 22 of his points in the first three quarters, capped by a 10-point explosion in the third, while Olson scored in every quarter.

After starting with just a quiet bucket in the first, Olson threw down nine in the second, another six in the third, then wrapped things with 10 in the fourth.

Jake Mitten gave the Wolves three players in double digits, banging home 14 in support of his team’s long range gunners, while Ben Smith and Alex Jimenez dropped in four apiece.

With just five of their normal seven players available, the 8th graders called up Roberts, Rickner and Meyer for a quarter apiece to give the starters a brief blow.

The beat-downs keep coming.

Even playing without leading scorer Chelsea Prescott, the Coupeville 7th grade SWISH girls’ basketball squad pounded Mount Vernon 34-13 Saturday.

“We played a great all-around game,” said coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “All 10 girls that played, played with enthusiasm.”

Coupeville pressed the entire day, thoroughly frustrating their foes.

“We have a motto. Compete at such a level that we piss the other team off,” Van Velkinburgh said with a laugh. “Mission complete today.”

While everyone chipped in, three Wolves earned special praise from their coach.

Ja’Kenya Hoskins “had a big day. She was everywhere and scored the ball efficiently,” Izzy Wells “stood out” and Kiara Contreras “played solid defense and hit a three.”
